Our littlo army, tho greator part of whiob. is always "in tlio field'' in the vast west, is called upon, besides much hard marching and often hard fight ing, to do much hard work or manual labor, and also much menial service. These labt two features destroy ah soldierly feeling and esprit de corps, rendering the men sullen and discon tented. Take the following for cd example habitually witnessed in the army. After a long day's march, with musket on his shoulder, forty rounds of ammunition in his cartridge box, and a day's rations of hard tack and pork in his haversack, the soldier reaches camp and longs lo rest his weary limbs after putting up, with his mates, tho little tent and bringing up his share of wood for the camp-fire. This is done cheerfully. But there is no rest for him. The sergeant calls for details of half a dozen men each to put up tho tents Tor tho ofiicers, another detail to unload the officers' wagons and another to bring up an ample supply of wood for each officer's tent fire, and also wood and water for tho officer's cook. In the meantime tho officer for whom the' soldier performs these gratuitous services, and who bore no musket, ammunition or ration through tho broiling sun, and who materially reduced the fatigues of the march by alternately riding or walking, and thereby remaining comparatively fresh, sits on his stool or reclines on a soft buffalo robe, sipping his toddy in sight of the tired soldier, to whom with his weary limbs and stomach full of tepid creek or swamp water, a like refreshment would be a blessing. To refuso to render these raonitl "duties," for which the service and the officers receive curses not loud but deep, tho soldier would incur the risk of being tied up to a wagon 7heel, to be bucked and gagged or, in the mildest case, get an extra guard and be subject to all sort3of unpleas ant treatment. Again, a soldier is called upon to do too much hard manual labor. He must be, or he is made to be, also a carpenter, machinist, wagon-maker, axman, etc. Hundreds of so-called "forts," consisting of officers' and soldiers' quarters, quartermaster and commissary storehouses, stables and guard houses havo been built by soldiers, some of whom received a few cents "extra pay" daily, while the majority were detailed as "fatigue parties" without more than theirscant soldier pay. Then there havo been built tlousands of miles of roads through the wilderness, and bridges as well, by our pioneer soldiery, who are often sadly overtaxed. She Wanted Some Hash. On ono of the northern trains re cently was an old lady, who evidently had never before made a railway jour ney. After looking about her for some timo in curiosity her eyes alighted on the bell line, and she asked the water boy, who happened to bo passing at tho time, what it was for. That, inarm," said tho boy, with a twinkle in his eyes, "is to ring the bell when you want something to cat,' and passed on. Shortly after tho old lady J got down tho family umbrella, and, reaching up to tho bell line, gave a vigorous pull. Of course the brakes wero applied, tho windows wore thrown up, questions asked, etc., the old lady sitting calmly through tho confusion. Presently the conductor camo rushing into tho car, exclaim ing: "Who pulled that bell?" "I did," replied the old lady weekly. 'WelL what do you want?" snapped the official, impatiently. "Well," said tho old party, medita tively, "you can bring mo some hash." Tourists' Gazette.
