Send tho Ore gonian man a sea bass whilo the shad wax in size. A Practical JoUt. A praotical joker of the sly order is Dr. , the famous Portland dentist. The Doctor does not look unliko a pious divine, and his mode of bearing himself, coupled with a sanctimonious timbre of voice, completes the deception. It is said of tho Doctor that daring on? of his recent exciting political campaigns he was hit in the eye by a prize fighter. He was, of course, too much of a gentle man to engage in a scrimmage when he know the odds were against him: so lie quietly bided his time. Some months later the priza lighter had a bad tooth and dropped into the Doctor's oillce to have it pulled. Tho latter instantly rec ognized his assailant, but did not betray his emotions. By dint of eloquent par suasion he induced tho prize fighter to take laughing-gas, and wnen the p. f. had become unconscious the Doctor's old time firo returned. Huiryiug over to hia old friend Professor , he borrowed a pair of boxing-gloves, and then return ing to his office went to work at the prize fighter. When the latter awoke ho had two hand some black eyef, and his nose was bleed ing with" delightful freedom. 'What is it?" asked tho prize fighter, when ho opened his eyes. ''Keep perfectly quiet," urged the Doc tor, concealing his boxing-gloves under the chair, "you've fractured your jugu lar." Then ho put a cork in his patient's mouth, extracted the tooth cud charging him 2 for the job, advised him to go home and go to bed at once. Tho Doctor is always doing somo very funny things, but whenever he sees that prize fighter he has to sit down for about an hour in some cool place and chuckle. One Sore Unfortuuste. Every fishing season on the Columbia brings alisinal record of battling with the breakers, of loss of property and life, of sadden engulfing in the pitiless sea, and the tale gets to be an old one. Drowning in every conceivable shape is reported, r.nd the list varies only in the different manner in which the luckless fisherman meets his doath. Yosterday was related to a report ar an instance which is unusual. There cr.mo ashore vesterdayiuorning on the weather beach ' :i boat, a net. n man and a huge tree limb. Tho boat, not and tre3 wer- all wound together; in the meshes of the net, held tightly, was tho body of a man in all the rigidity of death. Itrequhed considerable effors to eztricato tho poor follow from the death enfolding mbhos of the net that had dragged him down to bis doom. The supposition is that his net caught the floating tree, and in try ing to free it the ocoapaat of the boat fell ovorboard, and tho boat capsizing, all -were wound iu together. What became of his partner, what his name wr.3, to - whom tho boat and not belonged, aro mysteries that time alone can reveal. Tho nut had no brand on it, the marks wore cut off tho corks, the boat was painted a drab color, the body was that of a fair- haired, blno-cyed young man, and so is chronicled ono more of tho many mute tragedies yearly occurring at tho mouth .of tho great river. They are poor, and listen to these dudes who pat roniza them with cheap baubles nnd promises of inlluenca in promoting their interests. Now, human nature is the same tho world over. Theatrical women are by no means worse than your class. In one respect I think they are better, for they aro free, honest, fearless and brave. The professional is a public man; ho works for tho public, lives in a public bo te , and thire is nolhing he can do that thj public i not made aware of. "You do not appear to bo especially in love with society?' remarked tho writer. " I despise the so-called Hociety with its cant and hvpocrisy," remarked Miaa Castleton. "1 hate the languid, lazy, good-for-nothing women who support it, and have no rospsot for tho vapid, sim pering, flattering, stupid, glass-in-his eye man who patronizes it. It Ls seldom that our theater-going peole aro treated to a week of atandaid comsdy-drama, with a nightly change of programme, and by such an excellent combination of artists as Mr. and Mrs. Kendall and the ladies and gentlomenwhoso ably support them. "MUiss' is certainly a strong play, and Mrs. Kendall in tho title role elicited as much applause as ever Annie Pixloy did. She impressed her audience last night by her portrayal of "M'liss" as an actress much above the average. Mr. Kendall as Yuba Bill performed his part in an excellent manner. Mr. C. A. Ferguson as the Mexican adventurer was all that the character demanded. Mr. McKee as the traveling showman deserves especial mention. He is one of the most prominent young comedians wo havo seen for some time. Mr. J. Sambrook as Jndce Beeswimrer kept the audience in roars of laughter, .this gentleman has evidently established himself as a gen eral favorite and deservedly so. Mr. liussell's character of Bnmmer Smith was a fino pieoe of acting. Mr. Henry Knight and tho balance of tho company played their parts in a verj creditable manner, and wo unhesitatingly pronounce this company to be one of tho best that ever visited 'Victoria. Tho scenery was all new to the audience, and tho orches tra was splendid. To-night John T. LEIXEXWEBEB. Astoeia, May 27, 1S&. Ed. Asteik: I desire to publicly thank Mr. J. H. D. Gray for his card in your paper of this morning's issue. It shows conclusively that public interests advocated and looked after by me, are receiving prompt attention. I am in favor of an ocean mail route if obtain able, without sacrificing our mail facil ities on shore, so much needed to assist tho settling up of our vacant lands; but having no experience, or desire to learn, I am n poor manipulator of Star routo business; nonce 1 ask to be excused irom protended motives to assiat the general public at tho government expense What 1 have heretofore asked was of sucn un 3ucFtiDuab.c public interest that I could omand it with grace. Mr. Gray and myself are before the public for legis lative honors, and I am perfectly willing to abide by their verdict on election day. "Yours trulv, "C. IiEiXENvn:3sa. Ffcli In the Sacramento. Never in the recollection of the oldest inhabitants has the run of salmon been ! as light in the Sacramento riwr t thia season of the year as'&t prc'.nr. A re porter met a couple of fish-jrman at Front and N street-, yesterday, whowere trying to sell their boat and fishing outfit. They said they had caught but five pplmon in three days, and had codchided to aban don fishing for a living and try the har vest field. On inquiry at the fish mar ket near by, it was ascertained that the fishermen all along the Sacramento, from this city to Benicie, vera in the same hard luck, and fully one half of them had laid aside their ueis, tied their boats up to the banks, and hired out as farm hands. Even the Chinese, whom it is said can live on c mere nothing, have in largo numbers abandoned the salmon fishing and gone into other and more lu crative employment. The canneries along the river'that this tinio last year were running full-handed night and day. now find that they cannot get fi3h enough to keep a small force at work two days in the week. The Capital cannnery in this city, purchpse all they can get, which, during the past week, has not ex ceeded one hundred fish a day, and some days much les?. What Ls tho reason of tho small run thi3year is a question often asked, but one that the oldest fishermen cannot answer. The small run is not alone in tho Sacramento river, but in the streams all along the const. Tho Capi tal cannery, by telegram, has received the following from the Columbia river fisheries: "Last Thursday 330 boats on the Columbia caught on an average of two fish to a boat. On Friday they caught sis to the boat. They did not fish Saturday nor Sunday, and on Monday ihoy averaged twenty-two to the boat." Somo of tho fishermen are of the opinion that lator m tho scapon tho run will bo better. The shad, planted by the fish commis sioners some years ago, seems to have "caught on" in good shape, and the river is now well stocked with small ones. At the Sacramento Market, yesterday, wore to be seen numerous specimens of the splendid fish, of which three were select ed weighing in all twenty-four pounds, or eight pounds each. It is tho opinion of those engaged in the fish business that shad will thrive in the Sacramento river, and at no distant day will bo as plentiful and valuable aB the salmon. Sfcrcmjieifo Record-Union. Of Practical Ueuctlt. Tho amount of work done by the United States hydrographic ofHco for the benefit of tho mercantile marine Ls enor mous. During tho past week 26,000 no tices to mariners, concerning new sur veys, tho discovery of new shoals, changes of buoys and lights, and in sailing direc tions for different harbors, were sent out all over the world, and mora particularly to American consols, with instructions to post them up in their offices and call tho attention of captains of all nationalities to them. To the consuls aro also sent tho pilot chart of the North Atlantic and every notice pertaining to the safe navi gation of the seas, with similar instruc tions as to posting them up. This work has been of such benefit that the consuls are continually Fending for additional copies of these charts. All leading mari time nations have a similar service, but the United States has cow taken the lead in everything of practical benefit to mar iners. "The pilot monthly chart of the North Atlantic, which first appeared in December, 1833, is the only cno issued by any government and it has alretdy become such a necessity that the puo lisher of the leading English maritime paper has ordered y,030 copies monthly to distribute with his publication. The demand for this chart is steadily increas ing, and captains are constantly writing to the Washington and branch offices ac knowledging it to be such a necessity that thev do not want to go to ssa with out it. Many of them also volunteer to take frequent observations at sea and keep their data for the use of the hydro graphic office. At the present time eight hundred captains are taking observations in all parts ot tho world regarding winds, currents, air, and water temperature, height, length and velocity of deep sea waves, limits of trade winds, fog ano ice, and all the phenomena attending cy clones, whirlwinds and water-spouts.
