PRESIDENTIAL POSSIBILITIES.

MncYeagh's letter to Brhlow pub
lished the dey before th meeting of
the 2t ow Yoj k merchants to endorse
Arthur, has boeu the irlncipal tuh
ject of gossip for the past week. The
letter was admittodly violent and in
the worst of taste, bnt it po strongly
put all the things thai the politicians
have lately been thinking about, but
did not utter, that everybody ac
knowledges the wind to be complete
ly taken out of the merchants' meet
ing. Many western congressmen hold
tho opinion that even if lacVeagh's
letter had not intervened to strip the
mercantile endorsement of pome of its
.entimentalitiea, the fact that the
New York bussiness men were at
tempting to bolster up Arthur's boom
would injure that gentleman in the

talked about considerably, and as
Blaine has gone to Maine to remain
until September, the president is
likely to have a monopoly of gossip
until after the convention.
SOME ESTIMATES
Estimates of the result at Chicago
next week have lately been twisted
into every shape by the supporters of
Blaine and Arthur, and tables show
ing strength of candidates in differ
ent aspects are being printed over
day. One of the latest is by Con
gressman Bayne, one of Blaine's
staunchest supporters. He takes tho
table by which Arthur is nominated
on the first ballot, and how that tho
letter's friends only claim for him 20
delegates from Republican and doubt
ful atates, while he receives 200 of
tho 303 delegates from Democratic
states. The method of exposing the
president's canvass has created
great merriment in congressional cir
cle?. Witlim me past low days a rumor
has been current here that those on
the insido have received positive m-
formation that Senator Cameron of
Pennsylvania, who arrived home
Monday, does not intend to oppose

any friends in the convention thev
would please him by beating Arthur,
even if to do so Blaine is nominated.
Moreover Conkling is quoted aa
speaking highly of Blaine. For a
longtime it has been known that
Conkling does not attribute his mis
fortunes under the Garfield adminis
tration to Blaine; those were visited
upon him by Garfield himself, and
Blaine knew nothing of the JKew
York appointments until they were

are supposed to have softened the

HENDRICKS OPPOSED TO THE "OLD
TICKET."
Washingtok, May 26. Since Tam
many's endorsement of the 'old
ticket" last week, nothing has been
talked of hero in Demooratio circles
but Tilden and Hendricks. Within a
few days assurances have been re
ceived through Indiana represent
atives in' congress that Hendricks
will not consent to run again for vico
president, and that if the "old ticket"
talk is continued muoh longer ha will
formally decline, perhaps even more
coldly than in 18S0. Tho statements
have not dampened the ardor of tho
"old ticket" shouters, however, but it
has compelled them to reverse their
calculations. "With Hendricks out of
tho way a number of candidates
for vice president have appear
ed on the scene. Tho most
prominent of these is William
K. Morrison, congressman from
Illinois, and author of ths defunct
Morrison tariff bill. Morrison, it is
said, not only would accept the vice
presidential nomination, but some of
his friends declare he is working
hard to agitate the strong features of
a ticket composed of Tilden and Mor
rison. Besides being strong intellect
ually, suoh a ticket would unite on
ono platform the present discordant
elements of the Democracy. Tilden
would carry New Tork, and Morrison
the doubtjful states of the west. It is
gtnerjdly' acknowledged that Morri-
son can and will acceptably fill tho
place niado vacant by Hendricks1
probable withdrawal. There seems
to le no doubt that Tilden will bo
tendered tho Democratic nomination.
Stale conventions me so generally
dl'?krin for him that congressmen
who lately desired reform tariff in
opposition to his advice are rapidly
giving in their adhesion. Itisjaow
confidently predioted that within a
week after the Republican convention
adjourns nothing will bo heard but
Tilden. As one Democrat in tho
house or pressed it this afternoen:
"We will nominate Tilden certain,
and if he d"es before July 8th we will
nominate his bones."
A lYrc-Bora Wisconsin Man.
A government, agent, who was sent
to Wiieoncin last fall to look up tres
pass coses on government lands, was
out on his travels one day when lie
met a man slashing away at some
choico timber on one of Uncle Sam's
seel ions.
'Anv land for sale around hero J"
tho agent asked.
"WaJ, tlfar might be," tfas tho reply-
vpj
"I'd like to buy a whole section."
"HavQ ye tho cash to pay ?"
'I have."
I 'I mought eell you this."
"Can you give a clear deed ?"
"Olear as a whistle, stranger. Gim
me SS00 cash, and Til deed yo tho

Tho agent coolly unrolled n map,
spread it out on a log, and said:
'You will see by this map that
i Uncle Sara owns this section. How,
then, can you give me a deed of it ?"
'See hyar, stranger," said tho chop
per, after a long pauso, '"maybe you is
one of them chaps as argufies that
Uuele Sam is a bigger man than a
free-born citizen of old Wisconsin !
I'll givo ye just three miuits to skip!''
The agent wanted only two.
A Tough Shark Story.
Oaptaiu Welfare, master of the
iJark Oakland, which arrived at Port
Madison a few days since from San
pedro, tells the following story as a
fact "When in latitude 35 deg.
n0rtb, longitude 127 deg. west, wo
captured a female shark that had
been following tho vessel for some
time. This shark measured eleven
feet in length, and upon being cut
open was found to contain forty-seven
young sharks, each about ono foot in
length, and four live suckers, about
ton inches long." Seattle PosUIn
trtligenccr. Ben Butler, when a member of con
gress, was sapping and mining one
day in an almost forgotten catacomb
under the dreary building known as
the Capitol at Washington, and ho en
countered a spectral-looking indi
vidual who seemed disposed to escape
observation. "Who are you?' queried
tho investigating congressman. "I
1 am keeper of the General Washing
ton crypt, "But General Washing
ton was buried at Mount Yernon,
twenty miles from here." 'Neverthe
less, yonder is his crypt." ''Are you
