A Teachers' Institute for the Fifth judicial district will be held at St. Helens- beginning next Thursday. The pro gramme has been received; there are com mittees and addresses, and topics for dis cussion and so on. but Astoria and Clat sop county are conspicuous by tho ab sence of the slightest mention concern ing the teachers down this way. There are ton or twolve teachers in this imme diate vicinity and this ssotiou should cer tainly have some representation in tLo institute. The surprise is all Iho moio from the fact that Prof. McElroy is a zeal ous worker for tho good of tho pablu schools and certainly must have souio reason for his action. How is it? Too Much For Fecblo Xature to Stand. J. A. Morehead and C. A.,Beed found a new fish boat on the beach Tuesday morning, about seven miloa north of Il waco. It was hauled to a place of safety, and left for the time. Tho next day the owner, in tho person of Hans Olsen, a fisherman, came over in search of the missing boat, and was informed that the craft had withstood the tempestuous breakers on the Columbia bar and tht surf on the ocean beach, and was picked up none tho worse for its wild pilgrimage. He then unfolded a tale that filled his audience with amazement. Himself and brother were in the boat together, well down near tho bar, when a huge wavi broke over them, capsizing the boat and throwing them both into the water. After buffeting with tho billows for : time they were both rescued, but in some manner unbeknown to each other. "With the boat went all the earthly possessions of tho two, consisting of a net, gun anu cartridges, sail, ours and paraphernalia belonging to a fisherman's outfit. After getting ashore on Sand island, tho broth ers came together each believing tht other drowned; shortly after the net ana gun wore recovered, then tho oars, sai. and other truck wero picked up. The re covery of the boat the next day. with the cartridges and remaining outfit, was too much for, feeble nature to stand, and tears of joy rained forth as they became apprised of thsir good foitune, and it was looked upon as nothing less than a dispensation of providence. The broth ers will haul their boat to Ihvaco and re sume operations on tho turbulent Colum bia again. Pacific Journal. Kvitiuuntft. Odd lots of Dry Goods. Abteuiak: Several months ago, at the request of several prominent citi zens of Tillamook county, I drew up a petition to Hon. "W. Q. Gresham, post master goneral, asking him to establish an ocean mail route from Astoria to Til lamook, Oregon; and after consultation with a number of prominent citizens here, I had a number of blank petitions printed, which wero signed by 251 citi zens of Tillamook county and nearly 300 citizens of Astoria in fact, nearly every one to whom the petition was presented signed it. As soon as Mr. C. Leinenweber heard of this petition, I am informed that he instructed Mr.Story,,tho nttomey for the Tillamook packing company in Tilla mook, and Mr. Sibley, the postmaster at Hobsonville and clerk for the Tillamook packing company, to get up a petition for increase of service by laHd from Seaside to Tillamook. This petition, with a small number of names, was hurried away to Washington, before other peti tions for ocean mail service, which had been sent into different sections of Tillamook county, were returned to the secretary of. tho Astoria chamber of commerce, for him to for ward to "Washington. Thus far, I think, Mr. Leinenweber was excusable, if ho thought it more to his interest to have the extra mail onct per week by land, instead of twice pei month, as proposed by the petitions foi ocean mail sorvice; and I assure you. Mr. Editor, and all others, that I am in favor of an increase of mail facilities on ill routes when the business and public demands require it; but the gentlemen n his mistaken zeal for personal inter ists, I think has gone too far for om seeking office from the people, of whicl the publio can judge after perusing thi following telegram, which I forwarder is soon as I learned that other petition, javing a tendency to thwart the oceai jjail route had been sent on to "Wash .ngton. COPX OF TELEQUAM. Astobia, April 25, 18S4. Son. J. X. Dolph, Washington, D. C: Please request tho postmaster generu o delay action on Tidamook mails unU jther petitions mailed to-day arrive. J. H. D. Sm: In reply to tho inclosed telegrai. .'rom J. H. D. Gray you are informed tha .he 4thult.,Mr. CLainenweberproteste tgainst ocean service from Astoria t I'lllamook, and recommended an increas tt service on route No. 44,124 from Seasid co Tillamook; on the 9th inst. a simila .utter was received from tho postmaste tt Hobsonville, and on tho 15th inst Jon. M. C. George filed with his endorse nent a petition to the same effect, and oi .he 25th inst. an orde'r was made to in ;rease service to twice a week on sail .oute to date from the 15th prox. Very respectfully, H. D. Ltman, Second Ass't Postmaster General. Senator J. K. Dolph. United States Sen ate. This ocean mail route is of far more im portance to the people of Clatsop am Tillamook counties than it at first ap pears. The peculiar situation of Tilla mook, stretching along tho Pacific oceai .loarly 100 miles, bounded on the north :UBt and south by mountains, which an crossed by only two wagon roads, and the. mpas3ablo for Boveral months of th year on account of deep snows makes tho condition of its inhabitant, .solated, and retards tho developmen ind growth of this county; and althougi it has been partially sottfed for 25 year jr more now contains only about 2,00t .nhabitants, somo of whom'in times pas aavo suffered for tho necessaries of lift, in their peculiarjlocation. The ocean mail route as proposed twice per month, at an estimated cost o jay 5,000 or less, per annum to tho cov jrnmeut, would open np the country am cause it to bfc filled with emigrants seek ing homes, and buying lands now com paratively inaccessible, and would mor. than reimburse the government for tht mail subsidy proposed. Farmers, stock nen and fishermen would then know tin lay and hour of departure from eitho. point for months ahead, and make theii irrangements accordingly. Owners o Jteamera knowing thoy are compelled t uake their regular trips, will reduce th jrice of freight, to induce tho farmers t aise produce, which brought hero t Vstoria thoy can exchange with our mer :hants for goods and merchandise. l'h jitizen of Tillamook, wishing to infori. uis friend in California, the east, e: tcross the Atlantic ocean in Europe, c u vrito their friend to come to Astoria wher they can take the mail steamer on a cer tain day for Tillamook. Tourists an excursionists will also come here, stop ug at our unsurpassed hotels, and af te i few days rest, not wishing to retun jast until they have paid tribute to Nep tune, will embrace the opportunity fo t nveor six nourv nue on the Pacini jcoan, and stepping on board the mai iteamer, will cross the Columbia rive oar, passing Tillamook rock light-house inter the harbor of Tillamook bay, which jcith proper buoys and light house, ha equally as good and safe an entrance nf Coo3 bay; and after spending a fortnigh. eating clam3, fishing, hunting elk and bear, etc,and return to their homes in the cast with praises of our land.
