The Judije took s,ugur in hi v.iih just "a leetle water,' tin rest or us took it straight lit our cigars, and ihen we snnlered out lo the lone ' rambling piazza, took chsirs and grouped ourselves fore pleasant ohat. It was a glorious morning in June; the air was balmy with the scent of flowers, and vibrated with tho mock ing birds joyous notes. There were four of us in the group, the Colonel, the Judge, the Major and myself. The Colonel was in momentary bad humor. His dignity had been ruffled !y the colored bartender. Ho had filled his glass nearly full at the bar in order to economize time and the negro noticing this, presumed on old acquaintance end snid: "Why, Cun net, dat's a powerful bi; drink yon is takin." The Colonel glared at him a moment and said: "la that any of your d d business?" And turning to us remarked: "A facetious negro, gentlemen." But the good cigar soon put liira in better humor, and he slowly set tled back in his chair with a look of supreme content. We were .talking abonl tin "bad men" of Florida, the chaps "who ate railroad iron," were on the shoot, cut and fist generally, and were consid ered untamed terrors when ihey rsuio j to town ana tackioa uio ro.t liquor or the village bar room. A DESPEItAUO. 'There," said the 3Iajor, touching me with his impressivo forefinger; "you want to see a type of the "Flori da desperado, there irj one now, just getting off his mule at the bor room door." I turned quickly in my chair and this is what I saw: A medium sized man of about -1.1 years, figure compact and well pro-1 portioned, a well shaped head covered March 1, not the 5lh as previously to with coarse black hair. unkpt and ported, laden with salt, provisions and shaggy, surmounted by an immense a general cargo, and bound for Saint black sombrero, that had evidently ' Pierre. It all happened iu loss time than it takes me to tell it, but ono of the cowboys said afterwards ho never thought a man could look so dovihsh as Dan did that night. Ho said his black hair stood up like bristles, his eye3 looked like two points of flame, and his voice meant death right there." "I know Dan well," said the Judge, taking tip the conversation, "and if you are over in his neighborhood and want a place to stop at over night, go io his house." He will bring out a fit little jug with a-corn-cob stopper, -and turn his back on you while you drink, so that you will be simply on your honor as regards quantity. When night comes you will probably get tho only bed there 'is in the house, and Dan and the kids will sleep on the floor. A special from St Johns, New Brunswick, nays: The French brig Stnorinc went ashore on the gniud banks Friday nnd was a total wreck in fifteen minutes. Fifty three passengers and nine of the crow were lost. The Scnorine was caught in a fog and the captain lost his hearings. He was making for this iorl, going slow. When the vos sel struck, tho wildest disorder pre vailed, thin officers and tho crew mak ing for tho boats, leaving the passen gers to earo for themselves. One boat, containing twenty passengers and some of tho crew, was swamped after it got away from the steamer by tho lurching of the vessel. The screams of the women were heart- reuumg. auohe oi mem sauK imme diately. Tho men struggled, but only a few succeeded, by catching the floating spars, in keeping afloat. Tho captain was unable to maintain disci pline among tho passengers. Many clnng to tho rigging after the first shook, thinking tho vessel would stand the strain, and thought thru would be picked up when the fog cleaicd, but when the vessel went to pieces ihey were lost. Tho followuig are the only details ebtainable: The vessel left St. jtfalo passengers. About the zutn or Apm she was signaled in a drift of ice, on the eastern edge of the great banks. A few days after a strong gale arose from the south-southwest, and with various changes and veering con tinued into May. Tho secretary now holds that where homestead entry existed at the time of withdraval, iritnin the indemnity limits, the homestead entry ivas can celed, and the tract did not fall with in the protection of withdrawal, but was anbject to entry of tho first legal applicant.
