It will soon be three years since he saved the crow of the Lammerlaw, probably in the course of three years more the medal will have reached its owner. At the term of the state circuit court just closed at Roseburg, says the Orego nian, there were three boys sentenced to the penitentiary. William Rider, who had scarcely passed out of his "teens,"' was sentenced for the crime of larceny from a dwelling; a boy named McClung, 12 or 14 years of age, got a sentence for falsely impersonating another, thereby obtaining money under false pretenses, both getting one year in the penitentiary. The third was Joieph Russef, who plead ed guilty to the crime of manslaughter for the "killing of Jesse Qninn, at Rid dle on the 12th instant, and who was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for the offense. Chief Justice Greene, in his charge to the Pierce county, W T., grand jury on Monday, paid a high tribute to the intel ligence, capacity .and conscientiousness otwomen as grand and petit jurors in the third judicial district of the territory during the past sir months. He has often felt, like Judge Wingard of the fifth district, "too much hampered by scrubby jurymen." Since the woman suffrage act was passed, tho chief justice has insisted upon giving it, in relation to the administration of justice, a full and fair trial. He said: "Holding court, with women as part of tho judiciary, is new throughout the territory, and en tirelv unprecedented in this part of the third district. Administration of justice in the household has for ages immemo rial been regarded as n matter for which women have b6eu eminently fit and ca pable. Liberality and good senso, jus tice, mercy and firmness enough, to rnnko her perfectly safe person to whom to commit for nurture, training, disci pline and development, those understand ings and wills which, after they have be come moulded and become fixed under her hand, shall be the virtuous or the vicious men and women of tho state." Another Kind of Cramp. "Were you ever troubled with writer's cramp?" eskc-d the statesman of the groceryman, who was busily posting up his books; "fingers clench around the pen vou know, and won't seem to let so." " "No," resonded the groceryman, re garding tho statesman with a fixed gazo, "but I have been considerably troubled ly fingers clinching around my raisins and crackers and seeming not to let go." And then tho statesman seemed to rec ollect that he had forgotten to call in on the way down and inquire after a letter from his wife's aunt, and as he went out the door there was a far-away expression in tho back of his coat that tho grocery man thought he never could tire looking at. A Sermon at Sailors' Snnj? Harbpr. A frontispiece of the June Ckntury is an engraving of St, Gauden's statue of Robert Richard Rfindall, tho founder of "Sailors' Snug Harbor," on Btaten island; and Franklin H. North contributes alive ly anecdotal paper on tho harbor, from which we quote a typical sermon of tho Snug Harbor preacher: "Chaplain Jones, already mentioned, presides at the little church in the grounds of the har bor. He is a sailor himself, having served before the mast many years, and knows how to talk to thow who 'follow the sea.' When a mere lad he ran away from his English home and shipped aboard an East Indiaman. He is about sixty-five now, and many years ago for sook the sea to study theology. As suon as he was qualified, ho went among the sailors of the great lakes, and afterward opened a bethel in St. Louis. Then ho returned hitbor and became the pastor of the Mariners' church. Worn out from early exposure and hardships, he was about to start for Europe in search of health and rest, when he was appointed to his present post by the trustees. "The visitor to the harbor who fails to hear him address bis shipmates robs him self of a spectacle at onco interesting and unique. Familiar with tho characteris tics of the sailor, Dr. Jones addresses him in his own language, nnd this is the primo reason of his influence over him. "Hero is the substance of n sermon . . . from tho text, 'Let go that stern line,' which is given in substance. ' I once stood on the wharf watching a brig get ready for sea,' began the Rev. Mr. Jones. 'The top-s'Is and courses were loosed, tho jib hung from tho boom, and the halyards were stretched out ready to run up. Just at this moment the pilot sprang from the wharf to the quarter deck, inquiring as he did so of the mate in command, "Are you all ready?'' " "All ready, sir," said the officer. Then came the cemmand: "Stand by to run up that jib! Hands by the head braceal Cast off your head-fast, and stand by aft there to let go that stern lino! Let go! Man the top-s'l halyards Run 'em up, boys run 'em up! Does the jib take? Haul over that starboard sheetP' "She pays off fine there she goes and' Hilloa! hilloa! What's the mat ter? What's fast there? Starboard the helm! starboard!' shouts the pilot. "What holds her? Is there anything foul aft there? Whv, look at that stern line! Heave it off tho timber-head! Heave off that tumP , "It's foul ashoro Bir," says one of the crew. "Then cut it, cut it! D'ye hear? Nev er mind tho hawser! Cut it before she loses her way." By this time there was a taut strain on the hawser. A seaman drew his sheath knife across the strands, which soon parted, the brig forged ahead, the sails were run up and trimmed to the breeze, and the brig Billow filled away. "So, too, when I see men who have im mortal souls to save bound to the world by the cords, the hawsers of their sins, then I think of that scene, and feel like crying eut: ' Gather in your breast-lines and haul out from tho shores of destruc tion. Fly. as Lot from the guilty Sodom! Oh, let go that stern-line!'" Treaehtroui lee. Mr. Jeremiah Coloman, Norwich, N, Y., sustained a severe sprain by a fall on the ioa. He says he thanks God for St Jacobs Oil. the great pain-reliever, whioh oured him. WHAT! do you think that JIJFF OF THE CHOP HOUSE gives j'ou a meal for uothlugand a glass of something to drink?
