EXTRAORDINARY BANKING.
Gek. Grant's partner in the bank
ing business appears to be an extra
ordinary young man. A New York
dispatch says:
Ferdinand Ward continued bis
testimony before the referee yester
day; and many times "while speaking
almost took away the breath of the
lawyers and spectators. Bangs, of
nrmiisei for the receiver of Grant &
Ward, conducted the examination
Ward admitted -that lie never had a
contract of any kind, and that he and
his business were frauds from begin
ning to end. Bangs cross-examined
him as follews:
Q. How do you draw money, on
your own check? A. No sir; I draw
money from Grant & Ward by their
check, getting the money at banks.
Q. How do you do it? A. WolL
CoL Grant might give me a check for
$50,000, and I would get tho money.
Q. Then how wonld you pay Col.
Grant? A. T would give him my
check.
Q. How could you pay it? A.
From what he and other people put
Q. So the real naturo of the busi
ness consisted in discounting a fanciful-prospect
of imaginary profits to
bo derived from, fictitious contracts
founded on manufactured and arti
ficial contributions of altogether im
aginary money? A. I cannot an
swer.it Q. You made a banking business
by imagining you were making
profits? A. Perhaps so.
Q.Ypu credited Mr. Grant -with
isu imaginary portion of imaginary
profits, and then ho would get it out
by means of a check to your order,
which j on wonld deposit to your
own credit? A. 1 think that was
tho way.
Q. And then jou would get tho
check of tho firm to your order,
which you would depost in a bank as
cash? A. Yes, sir.
Q. Having thus got credit for po
many dollars, you would givo tho
firm of Grant fc Ward your owu
check and deposit it in bank? A.
Sometimes.
Q. And did you practico all this
art and deceive all those people with
out the assistance of a single confed
erate? A. I did; no one was in with
me.
Q. How can you find out what
you did with tho 8379,000 you had
drawn out of tho concern? A. Per-
haps by comffnrilp; the ledger account I
with my check-book.
It is expected that Ward will bo
criminally prosecuted find go to state
prison for a long term.
A stout is going the rounds con
cerning a quartermaster at a frontier
reservation post who, it is said, after
many fruitless applications for ad
ditional food for the Indians at the
agency, at last put in a requisition for
a Gatling gun. The commanding of
ficer forwarded the application with
this endersement: "In my opinion
the Indians at this agency are starv
ing to death and I recommend that a
Gatling gun be sent to compel them
to starve peaceably." The gun was
sent, so the story goes, and the In
dians are now starving quietly.
The whole "Indian policy" of the
United States is summed up in this
anecdote. It is in the natural and
inevitable course of events that the
Indian must disappear, but we do not
even allow him the miserable privi
lege of looking out for himself. We
have taken his hunting grounds, de
stroyed his game and confined him
in reservations where it is impossible
for him to find his own living in his
own way; in short we compel him to
starve and when he rebels against
this, we shoot him.
If it is necessary to hasten the; in
evitable extermination of the Indians
it would be much more humane to turn
the Gatling guns upon them and kill
them off outright and so put them out
of their misery. Starvation is the!
most cruel mode of death wo could
I inflict and it is either that or war
that we offer. Left to himself the
Indian might get along; but we can
not leave him to himself. The white
men want the best lands and it has
become neoessarj to confine the In
dians to reservations where they
must either starve or bo fed by the
government and it is a disgraceful
fact that our machinery of govern
ment is uot adequate to supply them
with sufficient food.
While we are disputing over the
best ''policy" for the Indians the poor
creatures are starving to death or
else making desperate efforts to as
sert their right to live at tho expense
of tho lives of our own people. The
poor Indian is doomed. He can
never do us any harm again. At
least we might try to make him com
fortable in his declining years. Wo
have taken from him everything that
was his; is it a great matter that he
should ask us for food.

and strangled, and at every sign of
returning animation barked at by all
tho hounds of political party from
the St Lawrence to Mobile bay. To
win the great privilege a hundred
candidates to-day with their thous
ands of friends are struggling. And
this is " politics."
A LITTLE book of political recol
lections, just published in Kentucky,
contributes a new story of President
Lincoln, which is worth quoting. To
a political opponent, who had taunted
Lincoln with his youth, he replied:
"Live long, or die young, I would
rather die now than, like tho gentle
man, change my politics, and simul
taneously with the change receive an
office worth three thousand dollars
per year, and then have to erect a
lightning-rod over my house to pro
tect a guilty conscience from an
offended God.1

NEW TO-DAY
The country is all right. What if
there is a small panic in "Wall street?
The wheat fields of tho west are
blooming. The juicy salmon are
crossing merrily the Columbia bar.
The cotton, the rice and the sugar
are growing in all the southern states.
The peanut vines are covering North
Carolina. Tho peach trees are in
blossom in the Delaware and on the
eastern Maryland shore. The tobacco
crop in Virginia and Connecticut
promises to be larger than ever. The
cranberries look well in New Jersey
and Pacific county, and there is not
tho most remote prospect of a failure
in applejack. The prosperity of the
country does not depend upon the
rise or the fall of half a dozen AVall I
street bulls and bears. There is no
occasion whatever to be discouraged.
The groat majority of the banks are
sound. The whole thing is an April
financial shower in May.
THE"tlelegates from the southern
states will in all probability decide
the nomination at Chicago. Mr. Ar
thur has a largo number of them at
the present time, but tho question is,
will they continue loyal to him to tho
last? Should tho first ballot show
that Mr. Blaine is ahead in the race,
will they have the Spartan firmness
of the famous S06 and stand by their
colors? Or, if Mr. Arthur shonld
desire to transfer them to Mr. Ed
munds, or any one else Arhom ho may
select, will they consent to tho ar-j
rangement? Earnest efforts are, it is
said, making to induce them to think
thatiMr. Edmunds is entirely too
'good a man to remove from the
senate.
