Salmi mm Ingratitude. Tho world's ingratitude never had a better illustration than comes from Augusta, Ga. An effort has been made there to erect a statue to the memory o! Alexander H. Stephens, the ablest man whom the state ever produced. Although the sum needed was small, yet tho amount collected thus far has been less thau S40U. Tho dead statesman not only worked un tiringly for his state, but he distri buted a large amount in charity. Ho had been very poor in his youth and owed his education to the 'generosity of a neighbor a debt which he repaid with the first money that he ever earned. Impressed with the value whioh this aid had been to him, he early adopted the plan oC helping young men of ability to acquire a collegiate training, and for many years before lii3 death it was his cus tom to have no less than ten of thee beneficiaries at various schools ai.d colleges in Georgia. These youths have gone out into the world and many have made fortunes; yet when a demand is made for a small sum to set up a monument to the man who helped to make them what they are, they selfishly refuse. Perhaps it would have been better for the world if the dead statesman had left them to hoe cotton or rive shingles in their native state. This is a flagrant case of in gratitude, but it serves to give point to the" cynical remark of a well known San Franoiscisan himself a liberal benefactor of the needy. When apy one attacked him in print with special virulence, he was wont to turn to his secretary and say: "By the way, have I ever helped this fellow?" All in the ifeat. A "Wolf having fallen a victim to the Tiger, set up a loud Lamenting and begged hard for hi3 Lite. He made such a fuss over it that the Tiger finally released him and bade Hrr go his road. The Wolf was hard ly a stone's throw away when he met a Babbit and pounced upon her. "Spare my Life, as the Tiger just now spared yours I" cried the Rabbit "Not this evening!", was the calm reply. "'Tis true that the Tiger spared my life, but while ho doesn't care a cent for "Wolf meat, I am ev- tremely fond of Babbit! Some interesting experiments have recently been made with dynamite. It is now claimed that this medium of destruction can ba fired from an or dinary cannon and not explode befoie leaving the "piece. The dynamite is encased in a brass projectile, which bursts when the missile reaches its destination. A twenty-pound charge would annihilate a small army, if it can be used as claimed. Mrs. Phoebe Bice, 120S Madison street, a sister of Hon. H. Clay Sex ton, Chief St, Louis Fira Depart., says tho St Louis Post-Dispafc7i,hz& been a sufferer from inflammatory rheumatism for seven years; the mus cles of her hands and limbs were con tracted and she used crutches. By a single application of St Jacobs Oil she wbb benefitted instantaneously, and finally completely cured.
