The Indian wheat question has
promised in this country to become
an all-engrossing one. The fear that
India-may outstrip us as .".competitor
in the race for the supply of Europe
with the wheat that it needs seems to
increase day by day. The only reason
why this fear is entertained is that the
cheap price of labor may soon reduce
the price of wheat, and that then com
petition will be impossible. The
mere fact of labor being cheaper will
notbowever, weigh much in the mat
ter. Eussia has much cheaper labor
than has "the United"States probably
in some cases ascheap as that of In
diayet we find Eussian statesmen
assigning as a reason for dull times
the competition of, the United States
in the wheat trade. If that competi
tion depended on the price of labor,
this country would long since have
been drhen Irom the field. The ele
ment of freight has been much less
too, as the miles of ocean from Eus
sia to Great' Britain are much less
than those from- Bombay or Madras
to the same destination.
And as'with two "of the leading ele
ments in her favor the price of labor
and the matter of freight Eussia has
not been abje to .injure us materially,
neither, we apprehend, will India.
The wheat growers of India (English
capitalists) will be just as anxious to
obtain higher prices for their wheat
as will the farmers of any part of the
world. If good prices are to be had,
they will have them; and when wheat
growing ceases to pay remuneratively
they will drop it.
It is not the cheapness of wheat
growing that regulates the wheat
market, but the quantity grown and
the demand there is for it. "Wheat
glowing a3 an in Jnstry is fast extend
ing, and the farmers of Oregon and
California have as much to fear from
the competition of the AYest, or of the
western part of British America,
as from that of India. It is
neither the cost nor the cheapness
of production or of transportation but
the quality, the demand and the sup
ply, that make5 the market advance or
retrograde. A short or a heavy crop
makes more difference in the wheat
erop of the world than could the
production of India.were it increased
much more largely than it is. The
wheat crop of the world is ordinarily
estimated at two thousand million of
bushels per annum, and it is increas
ing with great rapidity. But the dif
ference in the jield of different years
will run all the. way from ten to
tweuty bushels per acre ; that is, the
yield will vary from one thousand
five hundred to two thousand five
hundred million of bushels a differ
ence of a thousand million of bush
els, equal to the production of three
wheat glowing countries like the
United States in voars of verv fair
production.
The India wheat yield can v.ork no
more difference than this that is, the
utmost it can do is to keep the mar
ket nominally low say as low as it
has been this year. The Liverpool
price varies all the way from 7s. 3d.
to 12s. Gd. per cental a difference of
about 72 per cent. No India crops
can cause any greater difference than
this. India, as a wheat-grower, must
be competed with by better cultiva
tion and a i eduction of the expenses
of transportation. The difference
between bad and good cultivation is
one of 00 to SO per cenL, while that
of transpoilation is equally as large.
The figure of 3 for transportation has
been in former years considered to
be a fair one, but it has gone as low
aa 1 Ik. Gd. It is now 1 12s. Gd. to
1 103. The former figure is almost
one-half of what was considered a
fair "price. The difference is one of
about 36c. per cyntaL Then take un
average of 11 bushels, which can be
readily increased to 20 bushels, and
we have enough to offset any pos
sible production in India. One hun
dred acres producing 14 bushels per
acre would produce 1,400 at 3L00
per bushel ; at 20 bushels per acre
and 22c. per bushel more, 2,440 a
difference of about a thousand dol
lars. With cheap freight and good
yield, therefore, Indian competition
need not be feared.
JosEPn Cook in one of his last
lectures, in answer to a question in
regard to Jesus' use of -trine, de
livered this thundering maledictien:
"Accursed be any theory of history
that affirms that our Lord and Savi
our put the dangerously intoxicating
wine cup to his neighbors lips!" Mr.
Cook's ipse dixit may have afforded
comfort to his followers; but, unfort
unately, historic questions cannot be
decided by maledictions of this Izind.
That intoxicating wine was used at
the Lord's supper by the early Chris
tians is evident from I Cor. 1L in
which Paul earnestly condemns the
excesses into whioh the Corinthians
had fallen in their memorial services.
Another evidence is found in the fact
that soma of the early Christian
sects, among them the followers of
Tatian, substituted water for wine at
the communion, service on moral
grounds. Churches which adopt that
,,plan to-day thus have early prece-
' fent for it.
