Eagle Cliff is no longer a fashion able watering place for bears and Oak Point has ceased to furnish any bear items. Pacific county used to send a good bear story, but since AI. Bowen got into Oystervifle the bears show up no more. C. S. Dow tells a pretty good one con cerning a big black fellow he caught on Dement a place a lew mites from here a short time ago. He had failed to coax Mr. Bear into a regularly built log trap, such as .any ordinary well-behaved bear would be glad to enter, so he rigged a "figure 4 trap," so constructed that the bear to get the bait would have to pull it out from under the log, which is just what he did, and lost his life, as he was found choked to death in the trap. His hide adorns the floor of Mr. Dow s kitch en, and the trap iB "sot" some more. Ol lutere.stToTlie Ladle. At a meeting of the Portland board of trade held last Wednesday evening the following resolutions were road and un animously adepted: To tho honorablo tho senate and house of representatives of the "United States assembled: Your petitioner, the board of trade of Portland, Oregon, would most respeotf ully state that it has hoard with deep regret that no appropri ation for the improvement of the mouth of the Coliimbia river has been recom mended to your honorablo bodies, and the amount suggested to bo appropriated for the improvement of the lower Wil lamette and Columbia, rivers is greatly inadequate to the proper continuance of the existing project for such work, form- , ulatsd by the United States engineers and approved by the honorablo tho sec retary of war, described on page 331, re E)rt of the chief of engineers of the nited States army for the year 1833. Your petitioner believes that the im portance of these great works, from a national standpoint, has been greatly underestimated. The engineering project for the improvement of the rivers from Portland to the sea has already demon strated its usefulness, each step in its progress being marked by inorsasad depth of water and better channels. For these reasons your petitioner claims that your honorable bodies would be forward ing an important trade, and would be doing justice to one of the nation's great est natural highways, by appropriating the full amount called for by the esti mate of the United States engineers as set forth on page 331, report of the chief of engineers. United btates army, for the year 1883. Your petitioner also believes that the improvement of the mouth of the Columbia river is a work that should be begun without delay. The rapid in crease in the population of the Pacific northwest, the enlarged acreage of its grain fields, the present and prospective extension of its commerce with Euro pean, Atlantic and home ports, justify the prediction that tho good to accrue from the appropriation asked would more than repay the expense. A long discussion ensued over the ad visability of sending a delegate from the board to Washington, who should again urge the claims of the Pacific northwest, and it was finally decided to telegraph the resolutions just passed, signed by the S resident and secretary, to Senators 'olph and Slater and to Congressman George. At a special meeting of tho Astoria chamber of commerce yesterday tho" fol lowing telegram was ordered sent and was accordingly dispatched yesterday afternoen: Astoria, Oregon, May 15, 1884. To Senators Slater cuul Dolph, and Rep resentative M. C. George, Washington, D. C: The Astoria chamber of commorco pro tests against longer delay in making ap propriation for the improvement of the mouth of the Columbia river. A differ ence of ten shillings per ton freight and one quarter per cent insurance, is now Eaid owing to present condition of bar. y order. E. C. HOLDEN, Secretary. The McAllister Tronpc. The Portland Telegram has the follow ing about this troupe, which appear here next Friday: The audience at Now Mar ket theater was taken by surprise last night. They were not expecting to bo more than agreeably entertained by a fair rendition of tho familiar drama of Leah, the Forsaken. Miss Phosa McAllister and her company are wholly unknown hore except through the press reports, and it is to be regretted that they are not alwavs reliable. But tho younc lady soon captivated tho audience, and by the time tho third act was reached those present were waking up to the fact that they were in tho presence of a powerful representa tion. Even old stagers were moved to tears by tho realistic acting, and in the curso scene the audience were breathless with awe at tho terrible rendition and broke out into a storm of hearty ap plause as the curtain went down. Those who had heard Jariauschek instinctively compared the two much to Miss McAllister's advantage. The latter has youthful vigor, a splen did voice, with clear and distinct reading, perfect enunciation, and a good figure, all on her side. There were repeated calls before the curtain. The support on the whole is good. Mr. Butler is leading man and a good one, and Mr. Fitzgerald rendered his part of Nathan with great ability. The performance waked up a decided in terest in tho company, and there will bo a good house to-night. Soma) 'a Day of Freedom. On the 10th the People's convention met at Adams, Umatilla county, Oregon, and presented a platform, legislative ticket and one commissioner for the con sideration of the people of Umatilla county. The platform embodied the fol lowing principles: Opposing any and all division of Umatilla county; advocating the appeal of the usury law, advocating the forfeiture of all unclaimed land grants and the placing of just restrictions upon corporations; opposing the election of persons in the employ of corporations; favoring a registry law, and favoring as sessing by precincts. C. H. Warner has received a letter from his brother in Washington, says the Col fax, W. T., Gazette, in which he says the secretary of the interior assures him that in any event the settlers on lieu lands will be protected, and that tho secretary of the interior is preparing a decision to the effect that the railroad company must first show that it has lost lands else where in tho territory; and secondly, hav ing failed to build tho road in the time specified, it is optional with the govern ment to say what lands, if any, shall be held from settlement for the company as indemnity, and finally, that tho govern ment will hold that lands settled upon cannot be selected by the company. This he thinks, will cover the ground so far as complained of, or so far as relates to tho settlers in Washington territory. AMOXG OUR EXCHANGES. It is said that the Edison company were preparing to send Henry Villard to Europe as a commercial agent, but some of the men in Edison were also holders of Oregon Improvement stock, which dropped because it was discovered that the coal lands which were supposed to belong to tho Improvement company in Washington territory in reality had never been transferred to it by the Northern Pacific, and were not likely to be. The news from New York has created a panicky feeling all over the country and every attempt is made in Chicago; Phila delphia. Boston and elsewhere to insure self-preservation. It appears probable that there will be but few contested seats in the Republican convention at Chicago. The call for the conventioa required that notice of con- tests shall be given to the national com mittee, accompanied by full printed statements of the grounds of the contest. Up to date only two notices of contest have been filed, one from the first district of Alabama and the other from the first district of Georgia. In tho latter case only have the requirements been com plied with by filing printed statements of the grounds of contest. The absence of contests indicates tho probability of a brief session of the convention. Two trains collided near Connellsville, on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, last Wednesday. The engines remained on the track and telescoped each other, but the heavy tenders jumped into the air and fell, the freight tender upon its engine, and the grayol train tender upon the first car in the rear of it. Six men woro killed outright, and four othors, fastened down by tho broken timbers, wore roasted to death, the car taking firo from the overturned stove, and burning up before the survivors could comprehend the awful situation of their shrieking companions. Three men escaped from tho car. The tender of the freight train stood thirty feet in the air, and inside of the car that was burned could be seen, amid the glow ing embers, twisted iron rods and dead ashes, three grinning skeletons, one sit tingjbolt upright, apparently peering into the fiames that had smothered out his life, as well as those of his companions.
