Conklingnow refers to Arthur as
"that man.,
"My Dear HubhelP tried to get a
position on the Michigan delegation
to Chicago, bnt failed.
Senator Vest of Missouri says
"dead or alive, Tilden will b3 the
democratic candidate.
Ah Oswego, N. Y., firm has orders
for 1,000,000 toroh handles for the
use of political parlies this summer.
Talk about Governor Eobinson as
a presidential possibility increases in
Massachusetts, so says the Philadel
phia re$s.
It will be about as difficult to get
into the national republican conven
tion as for Jumbo to squeeze through
the eye of a needle. Chicago Jour
nal. "
Mother, may I go out to vote?
"Yes, my charming daughter;
Be sure you get a big bank note
Foroting as you oughter."
The New York Herald pronounces
Secretary Eobert Lincoln "the best
dark horse for the presidential nomi
nation on the republican ticket that
this country is exhibiting."
To the Cincinnati Enquirer (Dexa.)
it looks as though tho only way Mr.
Tilden can shirk the responsibility of
leading the party is to die. The En
quirer has a blunt way of speaking.
It is understood that if Tilden de
clines to be the democratic candidate
for the presidency the Oregon delega
tion to the Chicago convention ISO.
2 vrill support Judge Field of Cali
fornia.
Eighty years ago North Carolina
had as many representatives in con
gress as New York. North Carolina
now has nine, or one less than she
had in 1800, while New York has
thirty-four.
The third term spectre is once more
frightening timid people. It is al
leged that Gen. Grant's friends are
maturing a soheme whereby the old
warrior will go into the convention
as "a very dark horso and distance all
competitors.
The Chicago Inter-Ocean says
that Gen. Logan is displeased with
Seoretary Lincoln because his name
is mentioned as a presidential candi
date. The secretary lias asked his
friends to desistj but still they con
tinue to talk Lincoln in Illinois as
elsewhere.
