"Whatever :cay be the effect of
flashing off burnt powder in assailing
and defending Blaine, the effect upon
Edmunds' candidacy for the presi
dency has been clearly visible and is
likely to be material. Thus far, Ed
munds has drifted along in the most
serene and complacent manner as a
dark-horse presidential entry, and
tho iiigh toned republican elements
Lave drifted toward him in an easy
going way. without the surface of the
Edmunds tide being disturbed
enough to see whether there were
any snags beneath it
The vigorous assault made upon
Blaine by the leading Edmunds organ
of tho country has suddenly changed
the aspect of the Edmunds battle. It
has disturbed tho placid surface of
the Edmunds stream, and there, as in
the reflecting waters of all the varied
Presidential craft, it is discovered
that Blaine is not the only tattooed
man in the presidential circus. The
defense of Blaine made by Phelps is
simply a feeble and foolish repetition
of what Blaine has said in better style
and under more favorable cir
cumstances; but the Phelps counter
assault upon Edmunds, evidently
made under the inspiration of Blaine
himself, has exposed political skele
tons in the Edmunds political closet
which are certain to hinder, if not de
feat, the concentration upon Ed
munds that once seemed much more
than possible.
The direct imputation made by
Phelps against Edmunds, touching
his interest in railroad securities
which were made valuable by con
gressional action, has little or noth
ing in it, but it presents Edmunds as
differing only in a small degree, if
differing at all, from Blaine, in that
particular. In short, it provokes the
logical answer that if Blaine is vul
nerable, Edmuuds is also vulnerable;
and there are few who will assume
that the lino can bo drawn between
Blaine as a more general operator,
and Edmunds as a special operator,
in railroad speculations which orig
inated in congress. True, Edmunds
explains and vindicates himself to
the satisfaction of his friends, but in
doing so, does ho not vindicate Blaine?
The political platforms thi3 year
are of the same old pattern. If the
carpenters who construct it are Dem
ocrats, tho Bepublicans are the worst
men in the world. If tho builders
are Bepublicans, the Democrats, in-
stead of getting nice fat offices, should
in their opinion be consinncd to eter
nal perdition. Here, for instance, are
the Massachusetts Bepublicans de
claring their "belief that the people,
who have so often condemned the
Democracy because of its recreancy
to public honor, it inability to dis
cern the right and its hostility to the
public welfare,' will never again in
trust that party with power. This is
probably the correct thing in a plat
form; but no one seriously believes
that Democrats are hostile to the pub
lic welfare. They are as much inter
ested in the safety of the republic as
the Bepublicans. The Democrats are
equally wrong in their assaults upon
their opponents. The political plat
forms on both sides should be honest
and truthful.

Mexico and the South American
countries for the purpose of securing
information relative to enlarging the
commercial relations between those
countries and the United States was
"reported favorably from the foreign
affairs committee. It will appropri
ate 70,000 for carrying out its pro
visions. If the proper men can be
found the money could not be better
expended. Far-sighted business men
with a broad knowledge of commer
cial interests, who will visit these
countries with tho honest purpose of
making a true report without tying
themselves to a preconceived theory,
can do excellent service to the coun
try. If mere politicians are to have
the places the more money spent the
worse the country will be off from any
and every point of view.
The Boston Traceler says: AVe
entirely agree with the Cincinnati
Commercial that Mr. Blaine's chance
of nomination lies in the possibility
that the Arthur votes in the south
may go for him. If Mr. Arthur's
name is withdrawn from the conven
tion, or a break of his column is in
any brought about, we incline to
think Mr. Blaine would receive a big
slice of the southern vote, and very
probably enough to nominate him.
Statistics recently gathered show
that the colored population of the
