About Coughs and Cold.
Coughs and colds are prevalent
now, especially among children, too
oftfen from the Ignorance or careless
ness of their elder guardians. Many
mothers appear to accept with resig
nalion the ropeated and violent colds
from which their children suffer as
providential and unavoidable. A
cold is by no means always due to ex
posure. Indigestion,, constipation, a
lack of scrupulous cleanliness, the
unwise habit of sleeping m mucli ot
the clothing worn during tho day,un
aired bedchambers all, or any of
these things may havo far more to do
with your ohild's tendency to cold
than the keenest breath of tne brac
ing winter air. And in a great meas
ure these things are under your
control. iTothera should understand
that this is a fact, whether they can
see how it is or not, that numerous
sore throats and colds are directly
traceable to indigestion and dietetic
error. Quantities of greasy food,
fried meats, pastry, and the like, ill
ventilated rooms, "and continued con
stipation, have to answer for many
cases of croup and putrid sore throat.
All these things weaken tho
system and render it far less able to
resist changes of temperature. Give
every bedroom a thorough airing every
day, more especially if several chil
dren are obliged to sleep together, or
with their parents. This is to be
avoided, if possible; if not, always
lower the window slightly from the
top or if this cannot be done, raise
it from below. There is frequently
bad air enough generated and
breathed in the sleeping apartment ot
a family with small children to sup
ply them all not only with colds, but
with a number of. so called "malari
ous" diseases, to last a year, perhaps
longer. Neglect of bathing is an
other prolific source of colds. A
child from 2 to 10 years old should
certainly receive an entire bath twice
a week in winter. A warm bath at
night, taking especial care to avoid
any chill after, will frequently break
up a sudden cold. Keep children
from playing in chilly, unused room3
in autumn and winter weather. Let
them play out of doors as much as
possible, taking care to havo iheir
feet warm and dry. A flannel suit
and rubber overshoes will frequently
save much cough medicine and doc
tor's bills. Keep them warmly clad,
but do not be content with thick
coats and worsted hoods, while short
skirts barely cover the knees leaving
the limbs chilled.
Delegates in a Foot-Race.
At the recent primary election in
the little town of State Center, which
represents the geographical if not the
political hub of Iowa, four Blaine men
were elected; but for the fifth, a tie be
tween a Blaine and an Arthur man
was announced. The aspirant repre
senting the former was a young mer
chant. He who espoused the cause
of tho latter is no less a personage
than the mayor ot tho village. At
once the query arose, how should the
matter be decided, and a' solution to
the 'problem was quickly arrived at
by the younger candidate challenging
his rival to a foot-race. Tho chal
lenge was promptly accepted, a track
prepared, and tho contestants,stripped
to the waist, started. For about half
the distance Arthur kept well to the
front, but then it became evident that
time, though she had dealt lightly
with the mayor, had not left him un
scathed, and though the race was an
even one to the close, Blaine secured
a victory. This somewhat novel, but
entirelv satisfactory method of decid
ing a tie has its advantages, in the
fact that it has afforded much amuse
ment to tho inhabitants, and broken
in on the hum-drum monotouy of vil
lage life. Tho Blaine men, of course,
are particularly jubilant, small as tho
victory is, and assert their conviction
that this little episode represents the
condition of things that will prevail
at the grand finale next June. Chi
