m t gaUjt gfovfem. ASTOKIA, OREGON: FKIUAY- .T..MAY i. IBM ViLiiitDS Madison avenue palace has been bought by Mibb Aver, a daughter of the Lowell pill innu. Nova Scotia has followed the ex ample of Ontario and enacted a law giving municipal suffrage to unmar ried women and widows on the same terms as men. The question of jthe eligibility. of national bank directors for Presiden tial electors has-been raised, some lawyers contending that a national bank directorship is "an office of trust under the United States." Some members of the house com mittee on public lands, it seems, favor giving a quarter section or so of the national domain to every survivor of the late-war. . A bill embodying this notion is under vray. It is evidently designed, like the original arrears of pensions act, for a bait to catch the 4 soldier vote." There appears to be no pressing neoessity for its passage. Anv citizen, whether ex-soldier or not, can already get a homestead on the easy condition that he live upon it. . Thebe is a gleam of wisdom in the suggestion of the Mobile Tiegister that the Democratic tariff reducers had better postpone operations "un til after the National Convention meets in Chicago and announces the views of the party." It h very evi dent thai the views of the party are at present in a lamentably loose and uncertain condition, and the average Democrat really doesn't know what he ii expected to believe this year. The twenty-four hour runs whieh the steamer Oregon mado on her won derful quick trip of six days and ten hours between Queeustowu and New York "were as follews: Afiles. Miles, April 11 440Apnl 17 470 " 15 -iOU " 18 4tW 1G 153 19 472 The last run eclipses the best over made before that, that of the Alaska, by thirty-six miles. The entire dis tance run was 2,801 miles, ieveuty-six miles further than the Alaska traveled when she made her r days twenty one hours and foity minutes trip. The average daily speed of the Ore gon was 4G1 mile?, or nearly twenty miles an hour. Mite. Blaine is a finely educated woman. She -was a Yankee school teacher in Kentucky when Blaine met her. Blaine had just gone to Kentucky to commence life as a rfchool teaohor. His school was very near that of his wife's, and the two struok up quite a friendship. Mrs. Blaine nt this time, however, was somewhat romantic, and she refused to tell her future husband anything about her parentage or her circum stances. Blaine's love finally con quered all scruples, and he proposed. Shortly after this school broko up, and she went back to her home in Maine. Blaine followed her, found that her parents were in good circum stances, and married her. Shortly titter this he went to live in Maine to oblige his wife, and so it came to be " Elaine of Maine,1" instead of Blaine of Pennsylvania. Tiie discussion of the school ques tion in connection with the propoed appropriation by the Blair bill has attracted considerable attention to the matter of text-books, particularly histories of the United States; and it is said to be a fact that there is not in general use in the public sohools. north or south, a history which gives a candid and proper account of the 'rebellion and the causes which led to it. In making books for the whole country the publishers appear to have carefully omitted everything that might displease the southern mind, and the consequence is that the rising generation, which should be taught the moral and political mean ing of the war for the Union, gets the idea from its school histories that the matter "was one of mere geograph ical " difference, and that the south was not so much to blame, after all, "for defending her homes" and try ing to keep her slaves from being -set free. It wouldn't be a bad idea for northern school boards to inspect test-books a little closer in this re spect before adopting or allowing them to be used. BOB..
