ASTORIA, OKEGO:
SUNDAY MAY4. 16M
DEMAGOGUES.
They are generally a singular coir
position of selfisbncsb, self-conceit,
and self-delusion. There are silly
demagogues and wicked demagogues,
but they are all self-infatuated, self- j
contained, and self-seeking. They:
simply nee the people as stepping
stones to power, as some so-called
religious persons rise Christ as a con
venient.'way to heaven, to be adopted
when all the joys of earth have been
exhausted. If the multitudes, when
they are lauded, extolled and fon
dled, are deceived, they need not be
surprised; for though it is an ungrate
ful thing to say, it is true, that they
are being led by designing men as
sheep to the slaughter. They who
thus rise at their expense, entertain
the profoundest admiration for their
own abilities. Your real demagogue
has confidence in his "star," believes
in the singular greatness of his des
tiny, and considers himself as equal
to anything. Ho regards himself as
many-sided feels that posterity will
desire to know his movements and
his thoughts, and so keeps a journal,
records his speech, sometimes builds
his own sepulohre and inscribes
thereon au account of his many vir
tues. It he happens to bo a preach
er, ho is familiar with the Almighty,
speaks without misgiving of his plans
and purposes, is assured that ho is a
"special vessel" albeit he may be a
cracked one and wa e3 with super
ciliousness all who differ from him and
his adherents into a place of sorrow
and despair. If he is a politician he
considers himself essential to the
we'll being 01 the nation, assumes
that his cunning is wisdom, that his
office-seeking is patriotism, that his
assertions are arguments, and that
his projects are public benefactions.
If he is a physician, a lawyer, a mer
chant for ho is a possibility in every
profession he is inflated, heady, ar
rogant, patronizing; a boasty, windy
braggart, who, like the philosopher,
sees nothing great but man, and. un
like the philosopher, seas no man
great but himself. His self-conceit
is always thus shoreless, oceanic, Ti
tanic, and engulfs in its depths every
trace of modesty and humility, and
beats down or swallows up nearly
everything that is valuable in human
character. He knows how to cringe
when ho' has purpose to serve, he
knows how to forget tho obligations
ho is under to those around him, and
he knows how to veer with the facili
ty of the weather-cock. And he is
EttfiLciaiiily -pi-iix--oopElbiry, ERCL
oblivious enoughio everything, save
his own advancement, to reconcile
his deviations and schemings with
the sense of his own importance and
dignity.
It is to bo devoutly hoped that
when Lieutenant Greely is found,
which we sincerely trust ho may be,
this will be the last we s hall hear of
Arctic expeditions. There have been
enough good men and true sacrificed
to the Moloch of the frozen north,
and no more lives should be wasted
in a fruitless search after a chimera.
If the north polo were reached, which
i3 pretty well proved to the satisfac
tion of every one savo scientific
cranks, cannot be done, what partic
ular good would it do? Ey all means
let America take the lead in discov
ery, but let it be in discovering some
thing which will bo for tho good of
mankind at large, and not alone for
the benefit of a few arm-chair
geographers. The expenditure is
also to be considered. Putting aside
the original cost of the Jcanctte ex
pedition, which was defrayed by Mr.
Bonnett, the taxpayers will be called
upon to pay a further sum of about
S251,2S9, and all for what? Echo
answers, "What? I Arctic explora
tion must be indulged in, would it
not be better if America were first to
set about building ship, that would
be suitable as Eearch vessels? "What
a farce it is that a great country like
this should be obliged to go to a
foreign port to buy a ship, and also
have to borrow one, as we have had
to do with the Alert, in order to
search for men belonging to our own
navy. We have been forced to this
for the reason that all the vessels be
longing to us were so rotten that not
one would withstand the pressure of
the-Arctic ice, even so far south as
they expect to find Lieut Greely
The cry of 4,No taxation without
representation" has a verv familiar
sbuncL It is now raised by tho women
of England, who are clamoring for
the suffrage. Societies are being or
ganized by them to resist the officers
of the law, unless their rights arc
acknowledged and conceded. Mr.
Gladstone is to bo pitied. Ireland is
still restless and unsatisfied. Mr.
Parnelland his followers are stronger
than ever. Tho Egyptian problem
remains unsolved, and the millions
who spin and dolvo are discussing
the abolition of caste and language
which, while it fails to find its way
into conservative print, is neverthe
less loud and deep. And now the
women. Mr. Gladstone should in
augurate a new policy with tho ob
jective point of providing overv one
them with a husband.
Within the last three months S23f- f
(XK),000 of northern capital has been
invested in the southern states. That
is the most effectual wav to dissolve
the "solid south."
