SOL. HIRSOH, Chairman. Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1864. DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM. Following id the platform adopted by j rh.o,l)emocratio state convention at The! Dallei, April 17th: ! Th6 JDemocraov of the state of Oregon, j in council assembled, declare: i First That we favor the forfeiture of j nil unearned TAilrond and jvaffon road 3 grants and the' opening of the land to i settlement Hnd occupancy by those en- titled to the benefits of the various land laws of tbe United butes. Second That we are in favor of the passage by congress of laws made in the interest of the people, regulating inter state commerce, ana also state law, con trolling and regulating fares and freights upon all transportation lines, and pre venting discrimination in favor of or against persons or places. Third That we look with alarm upon tbe unauthorized assumption of power and jurisdiction of United States courts in interfering with officers collecting the revenue of the state of Oregon. Fourth That we are in favor of the mortgage tax law, and believe the prin ciple of taxation enunciated therein is correct and ought to be sustained. FifthThat we favor the passage of such laws in relation to the assessment and collection of taxes as will make the assessment and taxation of property equal and uniform throughout the state, and demand the strict enforcement of such laws when enacted. Sixth That the power conferred by thfi federal constitution nnoii conrreK3 in enact tariff laws was given for the sole 1 and exclusive purpose of deriving reve-i nuesfor the support of such government, j and that the enacting of any tariff law! tor any other purpose, such us taxation ! of one class of people, is as entirely un- j warranted by the constitution &a it is re pugnant to justice and inimical to the general welfare, and we therefore favor a tariff for revenue, limited to the necessi ties of government economically admin istered, and a gradual but persistent re duction of the existing protective duties. Seventh That the improvement of our coast harbors, the Columbia riyor and its tributaries, is of vital importance to the commerce of the whole state of Oregon, and wo earnestly ask that an adequate appropriation be made by our present congress to begin the work of the Colum bia river bar improvement, already too long neglected. We also ask such appro priation for the Cascade locks as will in sure their speedy completion; also, we ask of our representatives in congress a united effort to secure a liberal appropri ation for the improvement and continua tion of tbe work of improving the har bors of Yaquina bay, Coos bay and the Coquille river. Eighth That we faor the abolition of the prison contract system, and the pres ent coolie trade conducted on this coast, as degrading to the wage workers of the country. Ninth That for the purpose of pre venting growing frauds in our elections, and to preserve the fruits of the ballot box, we lavor the passage of a registry law. Tenth That we are in favor of more efficient mechanica' lien laws. ASTORIA FIRE DEPARTMENT. F.P.HICKS A. A. CLCVELAND.. J, G. CHAKTEBS Chief Engineer. .1st Asst. Engineer. 2d Aast. Engineer. TVliat the eountry wants just now is less religion and more pioty, less advice and ruoro examplo, less" poli tics and jnore patriotism, and less pedigree and more pluck. A very stubborn man is often wrong but seldom dishonest. A strong intimacy may esit be- j tween iwo fools, but friendship usvor. Let ns bo kind to each other hero on earth; it will save ns much con fusion when we meet in heavon. Sileuce is a good place lo hide, but fools can't find the place. There arc many people who have got a good deal more religion than common sense. Beligion is excellent but it isn't n substitute for common sense. There are plenty of people who know how to make money and how to waste it, but few know how to spend it The symptoms of patience and laziness are so near alike that it would bother many people to tell which disease they have the most of. If there were no fools, this world would be a dreary place to live in. One enemy can work you more of evil than two friends can do yon of good. There is nothing that shows strength of character more than eccentricity, it it is "natural. Tbe laborers at Fort Davis are Mexicans, who have neither the abil ity to lead nor the docility to follow. They plow with a forked stick and hoe with a root. They sleep on r. sheepskin and eat prairie dog and hominy. They will beg yon for a nickel and murder you for a dollar. They work three hours a day and steal ten hours a night They can live on S3 a month when they keep themselves and eat $3 a day when you have to feod them. Harrods burg Democrat. For the last six months of 1SS3, the lands patented to settlors for home steads exceeded that during the same period of the previous year by moro than 207,000 acres. This fact shows that tho people want the land and should deter Congress from granting large domains either to companies or individuals; it shjuld also determine that body to recover tho 8G,OOJ,00!) acres stolen by the land grabbers. This country is growing too fast for the government to be prodigal of its lands, the one source of its life and strength. Han Jose Col. Mercury. J MEiT3. SEaBURY & JOUSSO.V, Gentlemen: Like most of my profession, I am cautious about pinninjj my fai h to any new nicdicino or curative agent. But your BENSON'S CAPCINE POROUS' PLASTER, has broken through the barriers and won it5 way to my good opinion. My attention was first called to it some eight months ago by a patient of mino Although 1 was well ac quainted with the superior excollenco of your other plaster and antiseptic dresring, made especially for tho profession, the Benson a was comparatively new to mo. I had heard, however, ot its merits a3 a remedy, in cases of Lame Back, Local Rheumatism, Neural gia. Congestion of the Bronchial Tube3 and Lung. Dyspepsia, Torpid Liver and the liko affections, and havo since begun to experi ment with it personally. I find BENSON'S CAPCINE PLASTFR an exceptionally clean ly plaster to use. and rapid in its action. Many tests of its qualitios, m2de in my own family and among my patients havo convinc ed mo that thoro is no smglo article so valu able for popular use, nor so helpful in tho diseases I have named. Should you desire to do so, you may uao my name to that effect Very truly yours, H. H.KANE, A. M..M.D. The genuine have tho word CAPCINE cut In the center. Price 25 cents.
