ASTORIA, OREGON:
WEDNESDAY AP RIL 23. 1S&1
Blaike seems to have the lead iu
Michigan by a large majority.
"The people of the North," says
Gen. Grant, "are tired of the bloody
shirt."
India may well double her wheat
export every year with labor at six
teen cents a day.
A Flomda paper says that "the
South gets more solid for the 'old
ticket' every day."
The White Man's Republican party
in Georgia has indorsed President
Arthur's administration.
Lifk is short only four letters in
it Three-quarters of it is a "lie,"
and a half of it is an "if."
Gov. Sherman of Iowa says that
the prevailing sentiment among Re
publicans in that state is for Blaine.
The third assistaufpostmaster-gen-eral
estimates' -that postal revenue
will be $2,246,2 IU less this year than
last. ;,
It is stated, that ex-Judge and - ex
Senator David Davi3 of Illinois will
act with the "Republican- party this
year.
Out of the forty-one district dele
gation appointed to the Republican
nationaf convention in Ohio, thirty
five are for Blaine.
It would seem from the expression
of primaries held in Ohio that the
state will be as strongly for Blaine as
Pennsylvania.
Glass bridges are taking the place
of wood or iron ones in England. It
is made into solidified blocks and
neither rots nor rusts.
The Montgomery, Ala., Advertiser
says the southern country is almost
overrun with negro preachers, which
are multiplying by scores, and hun
dreds. The new city hall in Philadelphia
has already cost $8,241,009, and is not
yet finished. It is going to be a nice
building, and the city taxes will be
collected in it.
LiXDLEY Nuse is the oldest ofBoial
in point of service in America. He
is the messenger of the secretary of
the navy and has filled that position
since the year 1823.
The century is gray and aging with
its eighty-four years. . It will give us
five more American presidents, the
last of whom will be the chief execu
tive officer of eighty-five million peo
ple What possibilities the twentieth
oentury holds!
.
Talking of tho'Cincinnati riot and
the causes which led to it, the Iowa
Matt Register bays that murder is
one of the safest crimes to commit in
Iowa. There have been over 299 mur
ders in that state sine? 18G4, and not
a murderer has been hanged.
A systematic effort to develop a
demand for the enlargement of the
Erie canal, so as to make it available
for steam ub'viaiioii, is evidently
gaining shen?th from daj to di. It

A man calling himself Dr. Gross re
cently wrote from Chicago to Sir
John A. McDonald that he could un
veil a plot matured in the United
States to destroy the Canadian parlia
ment buildings with dynamite. Cross
was invited to visit Ottawa, where
he is said to have given satisfactory
evidence to sustain his charges.
Abanghman down in New Mexico
tacked this liote on the cover of his
iecurely-locked well: Owing to the
disorganized state of affairs in the
territory, and the lawlessness preva
lent everywhere, all parties are posi
tively forbidden to camp on the ranch
or take water from the well. No
questions answered, but shoot on
sight
This is the way" Lawyer Campbell,
who defended Berner, secured his
Roquittal and brought about the Cin
cinnati riet: Of the hundred jurors
drawn in the case, he selected twelve
to be "fixed." To the others he sent
marked copies of the Cincinnati news
papers containing Berner's oonfession
btforathe coroner. Under the law
of the state none of the jurors who
had read this confession could serve.
m t
Stobies about the prodigality of
Americans, and the astounding pro
jects which they are supposed to be
continually forming, are very rife in
Europe. The latest seems to be tho
largest, and is solemnly told by the
Figaro of Paris. It is to the effect
that "twelve Amerioan millionaires
have united and intend to build in
Jerusalem a temple that shall exactly
correspond to that which was de
strayed by the Romans in A. D. 70."
It adds the information that two of
tbasa "millionaires" have already
S9D to Palestine to select the. time
sad x&oum of operation.
