Remark the uses of an enemy: 1. The bavin gone is proof that yon somebody. "Wishy-washy, worthfess, empty people never have enemies. Men who never move never run against anytbinir: and when a man is thoroughly dead and utterly bnried nothing ever runs against him. To be run against is proof of existence and position; to rtm against some thing is proof of motion. 2. An cuemy is, to say the least, not partial to you. He wiU not flatter. He will not exaggerate your virtues. It is very probable that be will slightly, magnify your faults. Tbe benefit of that is two-fold; it is to permit you to know that you have faults, and are, therefore, not a monster, and it make3 them of such size as to be visible and man ageable. Of course, if you have a fault, you desire to know it; when you become aware that you have a fault, you desire to correct it. Your enemy does for you this valuable work wbiob your friend cannot per form. 3. In addition, your enemy keeps you wide awake. Ho does not let you sleep at your post. There are two that always keep watch namely, tbe lover and tbe baton Tour lover watches that you may sleep. He keeps off noises, excludes night, ad justs surroundings, that notLing may disturb you. Your hater watches that you" may not sleep. He stirs you up when you aro napping. He keeps your faculties on the alert Even when bo does nothing be will have put you in such a state of mind that you cannot tell what be will do next, and this mental qui vive must be worth something, 4. He is a detective among your friends. You need to know who your friends are, and who are not, and who are your enemies. The last of these three will discriminate tbe other two" When your enemy goes to ono who is neither friend or enemy, and assails you, the inuuTerent one will have nothing to say or chime in, not be cause he is your enemy, but because it is so much easier to assent than op pose, and especially than to re fute. But your friend will take up cudgels for you on the instant. He will deny everything and insist on proof, and proving is very hard work. There is not a truthful man in the world that could afford to undertake to prove one-tenth of all bis asser tions. Your friend will call your en emy to tbe proof; and if the indiffer ent person, through carelessness, re peats the assertions of your enemy, be is soon made to feel the inconven ience thereof by the zeal your friend manifests. Follow your enemy around and you will find your friends, for be will develop them so that they cannot be mistaken. Tbe next best thing to having a hundred real friends is to have one open enemy. It comes to us througb channels friendly to tho president that he is about to take a new departure and launch a very vigorous policy in re gard to the interoceauic canal. It is said to be no Jess than a proposition for congress to make a direct appro priation of $100,000,000 to build a ship canal through Nicaragua, to be owned and maintained by our govern ment, to be entirely free of tolls to vessels ot the United States, while ber nations shall pay tolls. iV". lr. But your BENSON'S CAPCINE POIlnUS I'LAaThlt, has biohen through tho barrier? and won it? way to my scod opinion. My attention wa Srst called to it some eipht months ago by a patient of mino Although I was well ac quainted with the superior excellence of your other plaster and antiseptic dreeing", mado especially for the profoIon. tho lien'on? was comparatively new to me. I had hoard, however, of its merit! as a remedy, in caaos of Lamo Back, Local Rhoumatism, Neural gia. Congestion of tho Rvoncbial Tubes and Lung;. Dyspepsia, Torpid Liver and tho liko affection?, and havo ?inc6 begun to experi ment with it personally. I find BENSON '3 CAPCINE PLASTHtan exceptionally clean ly piaster to use. and rapid in its action. Many tests of its qualities, mrde in my own family and among my patient? have convinc ed me that there is no single article so valu able for popular use, nor so helpfal in the di?ea.es I have named.
