Bulletin of the loth makes an excel lent point. It says: "But whoever is nominated, it is to bs hoped that the Republican na tional convention will not fall into the mistake which has already been the cause of some sad passages in our history. It has been the custom of both parties to give the vice presi dency to the defeated wing of the party. Johnson was placed on "the ticket with Lincoln, on his second nomination for the presidency, to con ciliate the war Democrats, Arthur was placed on the ticket with Gar flsld to appease the defeated stal warts. Remotely this led to the assassination of two presidents of the United States. If we go further back in our history other dark pages will bs found referable to the' same cause. There is a reasonable probability that Buchanan came near losing his life by poison. The mystery of the Na tional hotel has never been cleared up. If he had passed away, the gov ernment would have fallen to Breck inridge who, as vice president, subse quently seceded and joined the robeK When two men representing antag onistic interests are placed in the condition of ruler and heir-apparent, the death of the former gives all the power and patronage to the latter. Wilkes Booth, the crank, thought that if President Lincoln were removed, Johnson, who would succeed him, would be more lenient to the South. But the reverse was the result. Johnson, under the pres sure of national exasperation, was, perhaps, harsher than Lincoln would have been. But this did not prevent him from intriguing to place his wing of the party in power. Guiteau reokoned quite logically that the re moval of Garfield would give the ad vantage to Arthur and the stalwarts." "There will be a defeated wing at the Republican convention which is to assemble at Chic ".go, June 3d. The proposition will be to give the vice presidency to that defeated wing. But in the light of past history a strong protest will be entered against any such arrangement This dispo sition of the vice-presidency does not conciliate anybody. No defeated delegation returns to its homes pla cated because one of its leaders has got the vice-presidency, and may by accident or otherwise be advanced to the presidency. If Blaine is nomi nated, a Blaine man, or at least a friend and co-worker, should be put on the ticket with him. If somebody else should win, the vice-president Bhould be taken from the circle of his immediate friends. "We have gone about far enough on the old path, and know to our cost where it too often leads." The able editors of the London newspapers, who govern Gladstone and kindly take charge of the United States have, of course, drawn 'a les son" from the Cincinnati note. At the distance of three thousand miles they have, in the pleulihido of their wisdom, made a political diagnosis of the situation and arrived at the con clusion that the republic has barely escaped a great poril. Visions of the Commune rise up before their start led imaginations. Let them possess their souls in peace. The republic stands, and will stand. Cincinnati is a great city and Ohio is a great state, but if oity and state should disappear to-morrow the country would run along in the same old-fashioned way. It is absurd to talk of the Commune in America.- That is an imported ar ticle. It is on the free list at present; but if it should be made to pay a" spe cific or ad valorem duty, what a cal amity for the European continent! Bismakck complains that "the tele graph fearfully multiplies his work, and that heing 70 years old he Las not the time to be uuctuous." The orusty old gentleman makes a great mistake. The telegraph does not iu orease his labors one particle. On the contrary, it serves to lighten them. He should blame himself and not the cables and the telegraph lines. Why did he get into a row with our hog? "Why does he bother himself about the French Eepublio, the Nihilists in Russia and the pope in Eome? The best thing he cau do is to come to Astoria this summer and eat some of the finest salmon in the world. He will find that the German nation will run along beauti fully while he feeds on Clatsop clams. The late debt statement shows that the bonds issued to the several Pacific railroad companies amount to $61, 623,000; the interest on these bonds paid by the government amounts to $61,160,000, and of this latter sum there has been refunded to the gov ernment by the companies in trans portation service $17,936,009, and in 5 per cent payments on their net earnings, 8655,000. . Havaka journals thank the Ameri can government for its kindly and sympathetic feeling toward Spain. They say there is no doubt but Sec retary Prelinghuysen may be relied -upon to act as did Secretary Hamil ton Fish towards these Cuban revo-Ittionist. The plank in the Democratic plat form concerning the tariff is an il lustration of the truth of Gen. Han cock's remarks in August, 1880, which a good many people think made him lose the presidency "the tariff is only a local issue." It is as true in '81 as it was in '80. Aueport at Victoria, B. C, has it that a syndicate has been formed to build and operate the Hudson Bay Railway line, to be carried through Fort Simpson, in British Columbia. mm The endorsement of Tilden auu Hendricks at The Dalles was thor oughly Democratic. That party is forever looking over its shoulder as it stumbles along. It is said that Lincoln imagines that he ought to head the Republi can ticket, and he is not much pleased with his mention in connection with the second place.
