A search for theuufortunate man was made, but owing lo the roughness of the sea he could not be discovered; but the boat steered to the spot where he was last seen. Here they found him floating, but exhausted, clinging for dear life to the legs and wings of a huge alba tross. The bird had swooped down upon the man while the latter was struggling with the waves, and at tempted to peck him with its power ful beak. Twice the bird attacked its prey "unsuccessfully, being beaten off by the desperate sailor, battling with two enemiesthe water and the albatross both greedy and insatiable. For the third time the huge white form of the bird hovered over the teaman, preparatory to a final swoop. The bird, eager for its meal, fanned "its victim with its widespread wings, Suddenly a thought occurred to mm that the huge form so close -to his face might become his involuntary rescuer. Quick as thought he reached up and seized the bird, "which he pro ceeded to strangle with all his might The huge creature struggled with wings and paddles to free itself. In the contest the sailor was beaten black and blue and cruelly lacerated, but he hold his own, and slowly the bird quivered and died The carcass floated lightly on the waves, its feath ers forming a comfortable support until he was rescued. Sydney Tele graph. The Wild Men of Jahore. A correspondent of the New Or leans Times-Democrat writing from Jahore, China, says: The orang-outangs, or "wild men," are found on the peninsula, and so are the orang-utans, or "men of the . woods." I am aware that Webster and "Worcester make these words syn onymous, but I am forced lo believe that both the great lexicographers have made a false statement in this . regard, as the etymology of the Ma-1 layan terms which I have given would go to prove. Certain it is that what are popularly called orang-utans here, living in the immediate vicinity of Jahore, are humans. Though of a grade inferior lo the Malays, and generally living apart from the latter, they get their living for the most part by comiug out ot their native woods and trading with the people at dauore. have not neara or any monkeys, however sagacious, that do this.
