The committee recommend that the primaries be held on Saturday, the 12th of April, and the count conventions on Tuesday, tho 22d day of April, unless otherwise ordered by the proper county central committees. The committee earnestly recommend that the delegates elected to the state convention attend in person, and if not convenient for them to so attend person ally, that they send their proxies by electors of the county they represent. The Republican voters of tho state, without regard to past political differ ences, who are in favor of elevating and dignifying American labor, giving free popular education to the masses of the people, effectually protecting all human rights in every section of our common country, and who desire to promote friendly feeling and permanent harmony throughout the state by maintaining a government pledged to these objects and privileges, are cordially invited to unite in selecting delegates to the Re publican state convention. SOL. HIBSCH, Chairman. Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, lb54. THE DEMOCKATIC STATE COXYESTIOX. The state Democratic convention is hereby called to meet at Dalles City, on Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10 o'clock A. m., for the purpose of nominat ing candidates for the following effices: Judge of the supreme court, three presi dential electors, representative in tho lower house of congress and district officers for the several judicial districts, and to select six delegates to tho national Democratic convention, and generally to to do such other bnsines as may of right come before such convention. The committee deem it fitting to pre sent to the Democratic voters of the state the following consideratiens: We see approaching an election of most vital import to our commonwealth in all its interests, both public and pri vate. Deeming honesty the best policy, and in striking contrast with the course of the opposition party, we have named an early day for the assembling of the state convention. Our principles as a party will then be enunciated, and our candi dates placed in the field subject to tho approval or consideration of the body politic. The variance in the vote of this state during the past few years, and especially the very close contest in the pi evidential election of 1880, gives us much hope that, notwithstanding our present minority, with harmony in our ranks, and a well directed exertion of our strength, we shall carry off the palm of victory. But to insure this end it is imperative that all Democrats bhonld contribute their undi vided support and 'hearty co-operation, not only in the actual canvass but in its very initiation the county primaries. We do not presume to trespass upon the precincts of our popular convention, but do earnestly invoke all members of our party to put aside past differences and personal antagonisms, to unite in har monious action in the various primaries and to send full delegations of re preson tative men to attend the state convention. We have deemed it fitting to reduce the number of delegates, in the hope of secur ing the personal attendance of those to be chosen. We especially recommend the formation of local clubs, where prac ticable, throughout the state. Believing that the success of the De mocracy is the welfare of the people, we cordially invite all persons, regardless of past political affiliations, who favor sim plicity, economy and frugality in the ad ministration of public affairs to unite with us. The discussion of Mr. Tilden's physical condition and the possibility of his discharging tho duties of tho presidency in case he were elected, recalls the fact that similar consider ations have once before played an im portant part in the national canvass. It was just sixty years ago, in the campaign of 1S24, AVilliam H. Craw ford, who possessed many of Tilden's traits, and was called "a "giant in trigues," had been for years scheming for the presidency. He had tried for the Democratic nomination in 1S16. when. Monroe carried off the prize, and he went into the latter's cabinet as secretary of treasury, resolved to secure the succession, in August, 1823, he suffered a stroke of paraly sis, but his friends hastened him into retirement in the suburbs of "Wash ington, and his canvass prosecuted vrith renewed vigor. His enemies seizedupon his physical misfortune as their strongest weapon of attack, but the Crawford party were equal to the emergency. They got formal bul letins from the attending physicians, declaring that he was on the certain road to recovery, and every few days they propped up the invalid with cushions and pillows in his carriage and drove him about the capital. The fact was that he was a physical wreck, only able to nffir his signature as sec retary to official documents by means of a mechanical contrivance, and yet he had such a hold on the "machine" the he secured the regular nomina tion from the Democratic congres sional caucus, whioh at the time named the presidential candidate. There were bolts, and a "scrub race" resulted, in which Crawford received 41 of the 261 electoral votes. Nobody had a majority, and choice was conse quently thrown into the house of rep resentatives. The question of Craw ford's health was still important, and his friends resolved to bring him to the capitol in order to prove that he was all right. But it was a fatal mis take, for Clay, who held the decision in his hands, and inclined toward Crawford, left his presence resolved not to support the paralytic No broken-down man has ever camo so near the presidency, and the country is not likely to run the risk in 188i from which it shrank in 1824. Brooklyn Union. How the Cowboy Stopped a Stampede. "One of the slickest tilings I saw in my travels," said a passenger from the west, "w as a cowboy stopping a cattle stampede. A herd of about 600 or 800 had got frightened at some thing and broke away pell-mell with their tails in the air and the bulls at the head of ;ne procession. But Mr. Cowboy didn't get excited at all when he saw the herd was going straight for a high bluff, where they would certainly tumble down into the can yon and be killed. You know that when a herd like that gets to going they can't stop, no matter whether they rush to death or not Those in the rear crowd those ahead, and away they go. I wouldn't have given a dollar a head for that herd, but the cowboy spurred up his mustang, made a little detour, came in right in front of the herd, cut across their paths at a right angle, and then galloped leisurely on to the edge of that bluff, halted and looked around at that wild mass of beef coming right toward him. He was as cool as a cucumber, though I expected to see him killed, and was eo excited I could not speak. "Well, sir, when tho leaders had got within about a quarter of a mile of him I saw them try to slack up, though they could not do it very quick. But the whole herd seemed to want to stop, and when the cows and steers in the rear had got about where the cowboy had cut across their path, I was sur prised to see them stop and commence to nibble at tho grass. Then the whole herd stopped, wheeled, strag gled back and went to fighting for a chance to eat where the rear guard was. You see, that cowboy had opened a big bag of salt he had brought out from the ranch to give the cattle, galloped across the herd's course and emptied the bag. Every critter sniffed that line of salt and, of course, that broke up the stampede. But 1 tell you it was a queer sight to see that boy out there on the edge of that bluff quietly rolling a cigarette, when it seemod as if he'd be lying under 200 tons of beef in about a minute and a half."
