The state Democratic convention is
hereby called to meet at Dalles City, on
Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10
o'clock a. m., for the purpose of nominat
ing candidates for the following effices:
Judge of the supreme court, three presi
dential electors, representative in the
lower house of concress and district
officers for the several judicial districts,
and to select six delegates to the national
Democratic convention, and generally to
to do such other busines as may- of right
come before such convention.
The committee deem it fitting to pre
sent to he Democratic voters of the state
the following consideratiens: A
We see approaching art election of
most vital import to our commonwealth
in all its interests, both public and pri
vate. Deeming honesty the best policy, and
in striking contrast with the course of
the opposition party, we have named an
early, day for the assembling of the state
convention. Our principles as a party
will then be enunciated, and our candi
dates placed in the field subject To the
approval or consideration of the body
politic.
The variance in the vote of this state
during the past few years, and especially
the ery close contest in the presidential
election of 1880, gives us much hope that.,
notwithstanding our present minority,,
with harmony in our ranks, and a wefl
directed exertion of our strength, we
shall carry off the palm of -viotory. But
to insure this end ft is imperative that all
Democrats should contribute their undi
vided support and hearty co-operation,
not only in the actual canvass but in its
very initiation the courjty primaries.
We do .not presunie'to trespass upon the
precincts oi our popular conention, but
do earnestly invoke all members of our
party to put aside past differences and
personal antagonisms, to unite in har
monious action in. the various prirqaries
and to send full delegations of represen
tative men to attend the state convention.
"We have deemed it fitting to reduce tho
number of delegates, in the hope, of secur
ing the personal attendance of those to
be chosen. "We especially recommend
the formation of local clubs, where prac
ticable, throughout the state.
Believing that the success of the De
mocracy is the welfare of the people, we
cordially invite all persons, regardless of
past political affiliations,' whoUavor sim
plicity, economy and frugality in the ad
ministration of public affairs to unite!

G. H. Darwin, in Nature, states
that some ton years ago lie made a
few experiments upon the subject of
uUnconsciou8 Bias in Walking." He
began by walkimr himself, and get
ting various friends to walk, -with
eyes stmt in a grags field. All walked
with amazing crookedness in paths
which were not far removed from cir
cles Two of the circles described
were not more than fifty yards in di
ameter, although the pedestrians
thought they wero going straight.
All diverged to the right excepting
one, who was strongly left-handed.
"I then got eight" village school
boys, from ten to twelve yeare of
age, continues Mr. Darwin, "and of
fered a shilling to the boy who should
walk straightest blindfold. Before
the contest, however, I dusted some
sawdust on the ground, aud after
making each of the boyB -walk over
it, measured their strides from right
to left and left to right They were
also made to hop, and the foot on
which they hopped was- noted; they
were then made to jump over a stick,
and the foot from which they sprang
was entered; lastly, they were in
structed to throw a stone, and the
hand with which they threw was
noted. Each of these "tests was ap
plied twice over.
"I think they were all right-handed
in throwing a stone, but I believe
that two of them exhibited some
mark of being partly left-handed.
The six who are totally right-handed
strode longer from left to right than
from right to left, hopped on the left
leg, and rose in jumping from that
leg. One boy pursued the opposite
course, and the last walked irregular
ly, but with no average difference be
tween his strides. When I took them
into the field, I made the boys suc
cessively take a good look at a stick
at about forty yards distance, and
then blindfolded them and started
them to walk, guiding them straight
for the first three or four paces. The
result was that the left-legged boys
all diverged to the right, the right
legged boys diverged to the left, and
the one who would not reveal him
self won the prize. The trial was
repeated a second time with closely
similar results, although the prize
winner didnot walk nearly so straight
on a second trial.
'1 also measured the strides of my
self and some of my friends, and
found the same connection between
divergence and comparative length of
striae. .My own step from left to
right is about a quarter of an inch
longer than from right to left, and I
am strongly right-handed."
Mr. Darwin believes that nine out
of ten strongly righVhanded persons
are left-legged, the reason being that
every active effort with the right
hand is almost necessarily accompa
nied by an effort with the left leg. and
a right-handed man is almost com
pelled to use his left leg more than
the other.
