The income of the government for
tha past nine months shows a large
reduction as compared with that of
a year ago. In customs receipts alone
there is a loss of about sixteen mil
lion dollars, and the internal taxes

holders and the owners of the lovely
bonds of different denominations
need not be worried about their sal
aries, their interest or their principal.
Fifteen or twenty million dollars a
year is a small amount to Uncle Sam,
and there is no danger that all his ob
ligations will not be promptly met.

ing the venerable old. constitution
and adding to it all the modern im
provements. Mr. McCoid, the author

that the great charter of our liberties

oountry who will cordially agree with
him. What a misfortune that he was
not alive and in the convention which
framed it! Had he been, his name
would undoubtedly"have led all the
rest of that brilliant galaxy of men
who have thus far enjoyed the honor
and glory of having devised the most
perfect system of government ever
given to the world.

presidency; General Sherman asserts
that he is not a member of that polit
ical faith, and a fnendof Senator
leot Payne, of Ohio, asserts "by au

made up his mind unalterably not to
be a candidate, Thia narrows the
list of strong candidates down to
iCr. Flower, Mr. Cleveland, Mr. Ran
dall, and Mr. John Kelly, with Mr.
"Sunset" Oox as a dark horse. Owing
to the opposition of Tammany Hall,
Mr. Cleveland must be counted out
as not available. Mr. Randall will
not get the free trade vote of the
West This leaves only Mr. Flower
and Mr. Kelly. Of the two we think
Mr. Kelly is the stronger. Tammany
would, of course, vote all day and
night if possible to elect him, and
then he is the strongest man in the
Democratic party with the prohibi
tionist. A strong Kelly boom will
probably be under way early in May.
