ASTORIA, OREGON:
SATURDAY APRIL J2. 1654
The man who speaks of trout as
'speckled beauties" is again at large.
A TAKirr-roB-voxES plank in the
Democratio platform would be better
than a tariff-for-revenue one.
It is beginning to be believes) ut
the Blaine boom is only an 'adrestis
ing dodge for the Blaine "j00t
Sesatob Johh Sebmajj declare
he is not a casaate. Fortunately
Gen. Logan b'aa not yet declined.
Mb. Pecheb's enemieB are im
placvjie They want to send him as
a delegate at large to he Chicago
convention.
What a fortunate thing it would
be if all the presidential candidates
would join the filibustering expedi
tion to Cuba.
An Augusta, Ga., editor saya that
five men in the. southern states now
read the newspapers where one read
them ten years ago.
Ges. Butler is consoled with the
thought that if he nominates himself
for the presidency be will be certain
of at least one solid vote.
The various "vital issues" now be
fore the country appear to have a
corresponding number of political
Promethean vultures gnawing at
them.
Tee German papers of Cincinnati
generally censure the mayor and
sheriff of that city and Governor
Hoadley for their course during the
recent riot
In Dakota married women retain
their own real and personal property,
and may make contracts, sue and be
sued, as if single. Neither husband
nor wife has any interest in the prop
erty of the other.
It cost a man in Hot Springs, Ark.,
$200 to kill an editor. Any ambitious
youth who is desirous of running a
spicy paper in a live town can now
take advantage of this exceptionally
fine opening.
Wondebfuii how auddenly the
HEsq." attachment to a men's names
has fallen into disuse. It was an ab
surdity. Everybody is "Mr." now,
and that's quite enough in this
blessed land of human equality.
Gen. Butler announces that he will
not be a candidate for the presidency
unless he is nominated. The modes
ty of the ex-governor of Massachus
etts is assuming a magnitude beyond
the wildest hopes of his many ardent
admirers.
About 2,000,000,000 is invested in
the dairy business of the United
States; 15,000;u000 cows supply tho
milk, and it takes 60,000,000 aores of
land to feed them, and 700,000 men
and 1,000,000 horses to attend to them
and tha milk they produee.
, . -
The income of the government for
tha past nine months shows a large
reduction as compared with that of
a year ago. In customs receipts alone
there is a loss of about sixteen mil
lion dollars, and the internal taxes
have also fallen off. Federal office
holders and the owners of the lovely
bonds of different denominations
need not be worried about their sal
aries, their interest or their principal.
Fifteen or twenty million dollars a
year is a small amount to Uncle Sam,
and there is no danger that all his ob
ligations will not be promptly met.
A WE3TEBN representative at Wash
ington wants to call a national con
vention for the purpose of overhaul
ing the venerable old. constitution
and adding to it all the modern im
provements. Mr. McCoid, the author
of this brilliant suggestion, thinks
that the great charter of our liberties
is entirely behind the age, and there
can be no doubt that he will find a
great many other McOoids in the
oountry who will cordially agree with
him. What a misfortune that he was
not alive and in the convention which
framed it! Had he been, his name
would undoubtedly"have led all the
rest of that brilliant galaxy of men
who have thus far enjoyed the honor
and glory of having devised the most
perfect system of government ever
given to the world.
Ths Demooratie situation is be
coming desperate. Mr. Tilden saya
solemnly that he would not take the
presidency; General Sherman asserts
that he is not a member of that polit
ical faith, and a fnendof Senator
leot Payne, of Ohio, asserts "by au
thority" that that jf&ntleman has
made up his mind unalterably not to
be a candidate, Thia narrows the
list of strong candidates down to
iCr. Flower, Mr. Cleveland, Mr. Ran
dall, and Mr. John Kelly, with Mr.
"Sunset" Oox as a dark horse. Owing
to the opposition of Tammany Hall,
Mr. Cleveland must be counted out
as not available. Mr. Randall will
not get the free trade vote of the
West This leaves only Mr. Flower
and Mr. Kelly. Of the two we think
Mr. Kelly is the stronger. Tammany
would, of course, vote all day and
night if possible to elect him, and
then he is the strongest man in the
Democratic party with the prohibi
tionist. A strong Kelly boom will
probably be under way early in May.
