The committee recommend that the
primaries be held on Saturday, the 12th
of April, and the county conventions on
Tuesday, tho 22d day of April, unless
otherwise ordered by the propor county
central committees.
The committee earnestly recommend
that the delegates elected to tho state
convention attend in person, and if not
convenient for them to so attend person
ally, that they send their proxies by
electors of the county- they represent.
The Republican voters of the state,
without regard to past political differ
ences, who are in favor oi elevating and
dignifying American labor, giving free
popular education to the masses of the
people, effeotually protecting all unman
rights in every section of our common
country, and" who desire to promote
friendly feeling and permanent harmony

government pledged to these objects
and privileges, are .cordially invited to

THE DEMOCRATIC STATE LO VKXTI0N.
The state Democratic convention is
hereby called to inc-et at Dalles City, on
Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10
o'clock a. m., for the purpose of nominat
ing candidates for the following effices:
Judge of the supreme court, three- presi
dential electors, representative in the
lower house of congress and district
officers for the several judicial districts,
and to select six delegates to the national
Democratic convention, and generally to
to do such other businesas may of right
come bciore such, convention.
sent to the Democratic voters of the state
the following consideratiens:
We see approaching an election of
most vital import to our commonwealth
in all its interests, both public and pri
vate. Deeming honesty tho best policy, and
in striking contrast with tho course of
the opposition party, wo have named an
early day for the u&seniblina of tho state
convontion. Our principles as a party
will then be enunciated, and our candi
dates placed in the field subject to the
approval or consideration of tho body
politic
The variance in the vote of this state
during the past few years, and especially
the very close contest in the presidential
election of 1880, gives us much hope that,
notwithstanding our present minority,
with harmony in our ranks, and a well
directed exertion of our strength, we
shall carry off the palm of victory. But
to insure this end it is imperative that all
Democrats should contribute their undi
vided support and hearty co-operation,
not only in the actual canvass but in its
vers initiation the county primaries.
Wo do not presume to trespass upon tho
precincts or our popular convention, but
do earnestly invoke all members of our
party to put aside past differences and
personal antagonisms, to unite in har
monious action in the various primaries
and to send full delegations of represen
tative men to attend the state convention.
We have deemed it fitting to reduce the
number of delegates, in the hope of secur
ing the personal attendance of those to
be chosen. We especially recommend
the formation of local clubs, where prac
ticable, throughout the state.
Believing that the success of the De
mocracy is the welfare of the people, we
cordially invito all persons, regardless of
past political affiliations, who favor sim
plicity, economy and frugality in the ad
ministration of publio affairs to unite
with us.

An Old Problem.
J. O. asks if the following, which
appeared in a GhipntTo nnnflr. is cor
rect: How many cubic feet are in aj
stick of square timber 1 foot square ,
at one end and taporing to a point at
the other, and 100 feet long? The'
answer Tvas 25 feet. Orton & Sad-j
dler's calculator gives the rule for
nnaing tne solid contents of squared
or four-sided timber as follows 'Mul
tiply the breadth in the middle by
the depth in the middle, and that
product by the length for solidity." A
note says: UI the tree taper regu
larly from one end to the other, half
the sum of the breadth of tho two
ends will be the bn a J th in tho mid
dle, and half tho sum of the depth of
the two ends will be the depth of the
middle.'' In this case the breadth
and depth of one end would be 0.
Following the rule, the breadth and
depth at the middle would be 6
inches, and the example would be 6
times 6, equal 86 inches, multiplied
by 100 feet equals 3,000, divided by
114, equals 25 cubio feet. A "We be
lieve this answer to be incorrect.

Mr. Jackson, of Forsyth county,
brought to our office a few days ago
a portion of an egg shell, on the in
ner side of which was plainly printed
tho name of a Gainesville merchant.
How to explain tho phenomenon we
can't eggzactly tell. The gentleman
says his little girl discovered it one
morning while eating boiled eggs at
breakfast. The mo3t plausible" the
ory comes from an intelligent citizen
who suggests that a newspaper con
taining the name of the gentleman
might have constituted a part of the
nest, and while the shell was in its
fresh or semi-plastic condition the
letters touching the egg were photo
graphed upon the inner coating
thereof. -Piedmont lJ)'ess.
An Excited Editor's Admission.
xVn exchange has a correspondent
who writes thus about a fellow who
broke his engagement with a girl he
had been keeping up of nights for a
long time:
"Of course ho has no henrr. but
what there is of him ought to bo
kicuea to death by jackasses, and wo
would be willintr to be one to lend a
helping foot."
In these days of sham and pretense
and wolves clothed in biyh-tariff
wool, it is not often that you cau get
a man to come right out in print and
acknowledge that he is only a simple,
trusting, sad-eyed jackass.
