m She gailjj gMtemn. ASTOKIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY ArKIL 9. 18S1 Mi:. YaxdebbhiT says he has no politics. Both parties are to be con gratulated. GexeraZi Login should not think of writing a history. Let him pet out an almanac. General Grant should send his discaided crutches to some or the Presidential candidates. Mb. Morrison's tariff bill has been adopted into the Democratic family; but it will have to sleep in the attic Mb. Conkltno admits that all great men make mistakes; but then, he be lieves that there is an exception to every rule. Canada does not want reciprocity with us. She probably intends not to make two bites of a oherry, but come in altogether. A Mormon on trial at Salt Lake Oity for polygamy, admitted that he had married several women for etern ity but only one for tima The new fast mail service from New York to the Pacific coast does not cost the government any more than the former slow service. A number of Chinamen are land ing at the Pacific ports in Mexico and working their way inland. They will soon begin to enter the United States by way of the frontier. A London journal in the effusion of its loyalty says: "Prince Leopold has served his country by his death." This must make all the other princes feel very comfortable. A recently incorporated town in Texas rejoices in the euphonious cog nomen of ' Jumbo." If its popula tion consists chiefly of cowboys it will become an elephant on the hands of the State. Jay GociiD's wealth is estimated by the New York Morning Journal at $53,795,413, and his annual inc ome at $4,640,011. Thus his fortune earns him $12,8SS.83 every day and 3.95 each minute. Chicago is making groat prepara tions for the coming conventions. A scarcity of water is not so much feared as a sufficient quantity of the beverage which not only cheers but makes men hilarious. El Mahdi declares that he is not El Mahdi. This makes the Egyptian question more sphinx-like than ever. Great Britain would cover the alleged El over with decorations if he would only disclose his identity. The duration of life in England is on the increase. The change is doubtless due to the fact that Amer ica now furnishes Great Britain with large quantities of wholesome food and lively reading matter. Investor Keely appears to have as much difficulty in focalizing and ad justing the vibrators as a stump speaker trying to catch his breath after a prolonged apostrophe to the shades of his illustrious progeuitora Minister Sargent admires Emperor William and the Kaiser admires Bis marck. When the grim old chancel lor admires American pork then the world will se."1 one of the greatest mutual admiration societies that ever existed. Ax English traveler says the people in this country have a habit of look ing one way and walking another. He is probably not aware of the fact that they are always on the qui vive for the latest human curiosities from Great Britain. A PArEB iu Minnesota starts out vrith, "Our platform is the abolition of poverty, ignorance, wickedness, unchastity, drunkenness, injustice, perversion of law, oppression, and eviL" Its success is looked for with feverish interest. The proposed meeting for aid to secure a home for disabled Confed erate veterans, it is tbought, will Lave an influence upon the general polit ical feeling of the country as furnish ing a proof of a fraternal sympathy batween the sections. Thk last issue of Harper's Weekly ' to hand comes -squarely out with a statement that if Blaine be nominat ed he cannot be elected. This, cer tainly, is enough to "give pause" to the most zealous of the plumed knight's adherents. The chief ques tion though is does the editor of Harper's Weekly know this to be a faot or is it just simply his own pri Tate opinion. This country will be rejoiced to hear that the Sultan has not demand ed the recall of our Minister at Con stantinople, the Hon. Lew Wallace. It is true that there has been some, unpleasantness between him and the Grand Vizier; but his Mohametan Majesty, out of pure love and affeo tion for us, has determined to retain as long as possible Mr. Lew "Wallace in Constantinople. We cannot be too grateful for this tender interest in our behalf. It would be horrible to have Mr. Wallace return to us at any time; but to have him come home with a Presidential campaign on our hands would be enough to drive us to distraction. CompiiAInt is made that congress has been in session four months and has not yet done anything. This is not a fair criticism. It has, in the first place, drawn several hundred thousands out of the treasury for its own benefit, and, in the nest, the dif ferent committees are industriously at work devising ways and means to deplete the treasury. When the ap propriation bills are all reported and passed it will be found that the sena tors and representatives have not been idle since last December. Again, did not Mr. Ochiltree, of Texas, strike terror into the heart of Prince Bis marck? Was that nothing? Mr. Robinson, of Brooklyn, has given sev eral superb wrenches to the tail of the British lion. Shall Jhey "count for naught? Did not Mr. Logan speak for three days on the Fitz-John Porter bill and succeed in having it passed by a good majority? Was not that something? And, last of all, has not Mr. Morrison succeeded in split ting the Democratic party in two on his tariff bill? Let us do justice to congress. It has really done a great deal in so short a time.
