THE REPUBLICAN STATE C05YE5TI05 A Republican convention f or the state of Oregon is called to meet at the city of Portland, Oregon, on "Wednesday, the 30th day of April, 1884, at 11 o'clock a. m., for the purpose of "nominating candi dates for the following office, to-wit: Representative in congress, judge of the supreme court. the presidential electors, and district officer for the several judici al districts, and to select six delegates to attend the national Republican conven tion, 8nd to transact such other business as may properly come before the conven tion. The convention -will consist of 206 dele gates, apportioned Among the several counties, as follews: Baker 5Lnke Benton -. 9Lane x Clackamas 10 Linn, 12 Clatsop 6Marion- 18 Columbia 4AIultnomah 35 Coos. 6 Polk 8 Crook SjTHiamook 2 Curry SlUmatills 4....12 Douglas 12Dnion 7 Grant 5 Wasco 8 Jaokson 6 Washington 8 Josephine SJYamhill 9 Klamath 2 Total -.206 The same being one delegate at large from each county, and one delegate for every 125 votes, and one for every frac tion over one-half thereof, cast for Hon, M. 0. George, congressman, at the last general election. The committee recommend that the primaries be held on Saturday, the 12th of April, and the county conventions on Tuesday, the 22d day of April, unless otherwise ordered by the proper county central committees. The committee earnestly recommend that -the delegates elected to the state convention attend in person, and if not convenient for them to so attend person ally, that they send their proxies by electors of the county they represent. The Republican voters of the state, without regard to past political differ ences, who are in favor of elevating and dignifying American labor, giving free popular education to the masses of the people, effectually protecting all human rights in every section of oar common country, and who desire to promote friendly feeling and permanent harmony throughout the state by maintaining a government pledged to these objects and privileges, are cordially invited to unite in selecting delegates to the Re publican state convention. SOL. HIRSCH, Chairman. Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1851. THE UEMOCBATIC STATE COSVEXTIOJf. The state Democratic convention is hereby called to meet at Dalles City, on Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10 o'clock a. M., for the purpose of nominat ing candidates for the following effices: Judge of the supreme court, three presi dential electors, representative in the lower house of congress and district officers for the several judicial districts, and to select six delegates to the national Democratic convention, and generally to to do such other busines as may of right come before such convention. The committee deem it fitting to pre sent to the Democratic voters of the state the following consideratiens: We see approaching an election of most vital import to our commonwealth in all its interests, both public and pri vate. Deeming honesty the best policy, and in striking contrast with the course of the opposition party, we have named an early day for the assembling of the state convention. Our principles as a party will then be enunciated, and our candi dates placed in the field subject to the approval or consideration of the body politic. The variance in the vote of this state during the past few years, and especially the very close contest in the presidential election of 1880, gives us much hope that, notwithstanding our present minority, with harmony in our ranks, and a well directed exertion of our strength, we shall carry off the palm of victory. But to insure this end it is imperative that all Democrats should contribute their undi vided support and hearty co-operation, not only in the actual canvass but in its very initiation the county primaries. We do not presume to trespass upon ihe precincts of our popular convention, but do earnestly invoke all members of our party to put aside past differences and personal antagonisme, to unite in har monious action in the various primaries ana to send fall delegations of represen tative men to attend the state convention. Wo have deemed it fitting to reduce the number of delegates, in the hope of secur ing the personal attendance of those to be chosen. We especially recommend the formation of local clubs, where prac ticable, throughout the state. Believing that the success of the De mocracy is the welfare of the people, we cordially invite all persons, regardless of past political affiliations, who favor sim plicity, economy and frugality in the ad ministration of publio affairs to unite with us. The Sun's London cablegram saya: The chief continental item is the re newal of the report that the Pope in tends to loave Eome. His recent re fusal to receive a good catholic like the prince of Bavaria, and a still more unimpeachable catholic like hid wife, the Duchess Giselda, daughter of the emperor of Austria, because they had in the'first instance visited the king of Italy, has brought into ptinful prominence the difficulties of nis po sition. He ias also been deeply an noyed by the action of the Italian law courts with regard to the College of the Propaganda. Various places are suggested as his place of retreat. Malta, which used to pe periodically mentioned in the days of Pope Pius, is discredited as belonging to a prot estan power, and the chances of Aus tria are increased by the report that his holiness had communicated his intention of leaving Bomo in an auto graph letter to the Emperor Francis Joseph. JBaettmobe, March 30. Athbishop Gibbons in an interview states that the American prelates will send to President Arthur a letter this week thanking the American government for its intercession in behalf of the American college at Borne. The arch bishop thinks that the action of the Italian governmant will be perma nent He thinks that all the Propa ganda property will be sold, except ing the American college. A promi nent clergyman close to the archbish op said it is not thought improbable that the Vatican and St Peter's will be confiscated in the near future. In that event the catholic church of the entire "world will protest and if with out success there is little doubt that the Pope will seek refuge in Austria . Last year the mill men aud lumber dealers of Portland formed a combi nation to put up and hold up the prices of lumber to extortionate fig ures. They succeeded in doing so through the season, taking advantage of those who had. made preparations to use lumber. Thus they reaped a temporary harvest But it was at the expense of future business. Lumber now, though offered at prices from 20 to 40 per cent below the outrageously high ngures of last years, cannot be sola; and m consequence the mills are compelled to make lumber with out a profit or reduce their output. It serves the mill men exactly right. For theirjeonduct last year they ought l ot to make another dollar for five years to come.
