As related in auotber column, Con gressman Georce entertained the house ol-jepresentatives last Friday by a speech in opposition to the bill forfeitin-the Astoria land grant. It is not for us to question the purity of bis motives nor the sincerity of bis actions, thougb it requires the exer ciss of Christian charity to refrain from caustic comment on the sight afforded by a representative that vre helped send to Washington stand in the national capitol and there de clare that because in the judgment of the corporation that held the grant in defiance of the grant's provisions, deemed it unprofitable to build the road for fourteen years after receiv ing the conditional grant, that they should not now be made to forfeit it "What rould the community think of any man who made a bargain, and with the terms of the agreement be fore him in black and white, try to sneak out of it because in his subse quent judgment 'it wouldn't pay?" It would be unfair to further criti cise Mr. George's speech, as the tele graphic account is necessarily meager, but it is manifest that the bill will not pass if the very man who should exert himself lor his state can prevent jus tice being done the people that sent him to represent them. To the credit of Carl Schurz be it said that he has declined the proposed gift of $100,000 from New" York friends. Schurz is no longer editor of the Post, and is a poor man; the mean things that he allowed himself to be associated with while he was secretary of the interior may never be wholly forgotten, but his action in declining thi3 proposed gift is a com mendable one. There are, however, those who think that Schurz still has political aspirations, and that his declination is as much a matter of policy as anything else. The Willamette Farmer thinks that "western Oregon and "Washing ton will soon have excellent commu nication with the world and with the interior, or Inland Empire that is, if the transportation enterprises that we are in need of come to pass. Time will no doubt see a system of railroads that will make Astoria their objective point. Eoads will develop the coast line of western Oregon and Washing ton, north and south of the Columbia, and connect the mouth of the great river with Portland and this valley." The general report from California is that the San Francisco merchants are afraid they are going to lose the Oregon trade. There may be a tem porary diversion of trade from its accustomed channels, but it is prob able that our southern neighbors "will continue to get their share. Oregon has always been buying a good deal that could oetter be produced at home, and the cessation of such purchases will bo greater year by year as the work of state develop ment goes on. A French scientist, Mons Ducha tre, has shown that moonlight as well as sunlight may have an influ ence upon plant-growth. Seed lings of lentils, vetches, etc, whioh had been kept in a dark place at once began to bend towards the moon when exposed to its light, and continued to moe with it. Despite the strong opposition of all the leading commercial organiza tions in the Eastern States, and many in the South, to the further coinage of standard dollars, it is not likely that congress will take action on the subject at its present session. 0?steh3 ltwo menes in diameter1 have been "discovered" in Puget Sonnd. The only surprising thing about tbe discovery of oysters on he Sound is that the bivalves are only two inches in diameter. They might just as well have been six. - - X The new water-works of New York oity will cost from 825,000,000 to $30, 009,000. A 259-foot dam in West ohester county, thirty-five miles from the city, will make a Teservoir hold ing 85,000,000,000 gallons. The city uses 103,000,000 gallons daily. Foetheb reports from the .wrecked steamship Daniel Stdnmann show that but nine were saved out of a total of 131. The captain, who was one of the nine, says that he mistook one light for another, thus running the vessel on the rocks. Aooordikg to Josblin, fishes have been caught at depths where they must have sustained a pressure of eighty tons to each square foot of their bodies. That may properly be considered an almighty tight squeeze. A coxtbactob on the new court house at Hailey, "Wood River, has barricaded- himself within the build ing, and is holding possession under ghotgun law. He refuses to abandon the premises until paid for his wort. ShaiiIi the next session of the Orc gon legislature begin next September or next January? is a question now being asked, and by the answering of which some solon can reap immortal fame. y Schookebs are constantly arriving at Yaquina bay with railroad iron for the O.
