The Republican voters of the state, without regard to past political differ ences, who are in favor of elevating and dignifying American labor, giving free popular education to tho masses of the people, effectually protecting all human rights in every section of our common country, and who desire to promote friendly feeling and permanent harmony throughout the state by maintaining a government pledged to these objects and privileges, are cordially invited to unite in selecting, delegates to the Re publican Etate coaventioov SUL. UlKbUH, Chairman. Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1881. THE DEMOCRATIC STATE COXTENTIOIJ. The state Democratic convention is hereby called to meet at Dalles City, on Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10 o'clock a. v., for the purpose of nominat ing candidates for the following effices: Judge of the supreme court, three presi dential electors, representative in the lowfir house of congress and district officers' for the several judicial distriots, and'to ielect six delegates to the national Democratic convention, and generally to to do such other busines as may of right come before such convention. The committee deem it fitting to pre sent to the Democratic voters of the state the following considerations t- We see" approaching an election of most vital import to our commonwealth, iuuuiu4uwtwu, uuiu puuuc aiiu-pa-' vate. Deeming honesty the best policy, and in striking contrast with the course of the opposition party, we have named an early da j for the assembling of the "state convention Our principles as a party will then be enunciated, and our candi dates placed in the field subject to the approval or consideration of the body politic The variance in the vote of this state during the past few years, and especially the "very close contest in the presidential election -'of 1880, gives us mucu'hdpe that, notwithstanding our present minority, with 'harmony in our ranks, and a "well directed exertion, of our strength, we shall'barry off 'the palm of Victory. But to insure this end it is .imperative that all Democrats should contribute their undi vided support and hearty co-operation, not only m the actual canvass but in its very initiation the county primaries. we no nof presume to trespass upon the Srecincts of our popular convention, but o earnestly invoke all members of our party to put aside past differences and personal antagonisms, to unite in har monious action in the various primaries and to send full delegations of represen tative men to attend the state convention. "We have deemed, it fitting to reduce tho number of delegates, in the hope of secur ing the personal attendance of those to be chosen. "We. especially recommend the formation'Of "local clubs, where prac ticable, throughout the state. Believing'that the success of the De mocracy is the welfare of the people, we cordially invite all persons, regardless of past political affiliations, who favor sim plicity, economy'snd frugality in the ad ministration of public affairs to unite with us. Old-Tlme Clam Roasta. Charlea' Island, which the Ameri can Yaoht club is fittiug up for its UBes, was ouco the Bummer home of old Ansantawae, who was the sachem of all the shore Indians between the Hudson and Connecticut rivers. It is a beautiful little island in Milford bay, and about throe months every summer it used to be dotted with the white birch bark wigwams of Ansan tawae. Old Uncle Peleg Abercrombie who is 92 years old, and whose ances tors were among the first settlers in Tifilford, is full of reminiscences of the clams and Indians of early days. "My great grandfather," ho savs, "came here about 1650, and his, Elna than, told me about the Indians when I wa'n't knee high to a grasshopper. This kentry 'round here used to be a great haunt for the Indians in the summer. In July they'd thicken up, and jest before Ansantawae got here you'd see a lot of his braves and aquawa working on his summer, wig wam on Charles Island. That was the royal island. He used to spend three months about the bay every year, and eat and sleep on the island. It's a great place for clams, you know, and its name, Poquahaug, means the land of the clam. They used to git off to the island jest about the same time of the year the city white people go to the shore now to eat baked clams. Jest at the- tune the green corn was in the milk, Tve heerd my old grand'ther say, was the Indians' time for opening the Poquahaug clam feasts. Then the clams were in prime order, being fat, tender and salt Huokleberries, too, were beginnin' to turn, and there was no eend to the swamp apples to be had. Off on the big flats 'twixt the island and the shore the men used to wade in with their bare feet, and tread or feel out the skulking hard clams. Meantime the squaws on the island would be fixing up the clam pit to roast the clams in, and which is the only proper thing that ever was got up to cook clams. That's where the white men got their notion of clam bakes. "Well, as I was sayin', the squaws made the pit by laying a floor out of a circle of big cobble-stones. On these were built a smart fire of dry wood. Arter they had het the rocks red-hot they used to brush off the cinders and ashes with boughs, and spread on the clams and the green corn, the fresh fish and the lobsters. Then, kivering the whole pile up with & sweet smellin blanket of rockweed and green kelp, they used to let the mess simmer till it was done. An' when 'twas done it made a feast that was fit for old Ansantawae or Jay Gould himself. It don't look well, I know, for a man at my time of life, but I'm takin' tew cents agin one every time that them New Yorkers never1!! have no sech good dinner off there as Ansantawae used to have, and even as Pve eat there in my time. Juicy clams? The best you ever saw. A fragrant mess of it? Well, I dunno of nothin' to beat it "An' that ain't all the Indians used to do there. 'Long in the hottest part of summer they used to string up the clams raw on cat-tail reeds and hang them on the brush all about the island to cure them in the August sun. My gran'ther said they dried thousands of pounds of 'em in this way, an' in the fall, when they went back into the country to their hunting grounds, their boats and their squaws would be loaded down with dried clams for winter use. The old island, small as it is, was a mine 'o wealth to the Indians. Milford, Conn- Corr. New York Star. REPUBLICAN C0UXTT. CONVENTION.
