from each' oodnty, and one delegate for
every 125 votes; and one for every frac
tion over one-half thereof, cast for Hon.
M. C. George, congressman, at the last
general election.
The committee recommend that the
primaries be held on Saturday, the 12th
of April, and the county conventions on
Tuesday, the 22d day of April, unless
otherwise ordered by the proper county
oentral committees.
The committee earnestly recommend
that the delegates elected to the state
convention attend in person, and if not
convenient for them to so attend rjersoni
ally, that they send their proxies by
electors of the county they represent.
The Republican voters of the state,
without regard to past political differ
ences, who are in favor of elevating and
dignifying Amerioan labor, giving free
popular education to the masses of the
people, effectually protecting all human
rights in every section of our common
country, and who desire to promote
friendly feeling and permanent harmony
throughout the state by maintaining n
government pledged to these objeots
and privileges, nre cordially invited to
unite in selecting delegates to the Re
publican state convention.
SOL. HIR80H, Chairman.
Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1884.
THK DKSOfiUTIC STATU COS VEaTIOX.
The state Democratic convention is
herebv called to- meet at Dalles City, on
Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10
ociock a. ., tor tne purpose oi nominat
ing candidates for the following offices
Judge of the supreme court, three presi
dential electors, representative in the
lower house of congress and district
officers for the 'several judicial districts,
and to select six delegates to the national
Democratic convention, and generally to
to do such other bnsinesas may of right
come lefore such convention.
The committee deem it fitting to pre
sent to the Democratic voters of the state
the following consideratiens:
We see approaching an election of
most vital import to our commonwealth
in all its interests, both publio and pri
vate. Deeming honesty tho best policy, and
in striking contrast with the course of
the opposition party, wo have named an
early day for the assembling of the state
convention. Our principles as a party
will then be enunciated, and our candidates-
placed in the field subject to the
approval or consideration of the body
politic
The variance in the vote of this state
during the past few-years, and especially
the"very close contest in the presidential
election of 1880, gives us much hope .that,
notwithstanding our present minority,
with harmony in our ranks, and a wefl
direoted exertion of our strength, we
shall carry off -the palm of victory. But
to insure this end it is imperative that all
Democrats should contribute their undi
vided support and hearty co-operation,
not only in the aotual canvass but in its
very initiation the county primaries.
We do not presume to trespass upon the
precincts of our popular convention, but
do earnestlv invoke all members of our
party to put aside past differences and
personal antagonisms, 10 uxuie iu uurr
monious action in the various primaries
ana to send fall delegations of represen
tative men to attend the state convention.
We have deemed it fitting to reduce the
number of delegates, in the hope of secur
ing the personal attendance of those to
be chesen: We especially recommend
the formation of local clubs, where prac-.
ticable, throughout the state.
Relieving that the success of the De
mocracy is 'the welfare of the people, we
cordially invite all persons, regardless of
past political affiliations, who favor sim
plicity, economy and frugality in the ad
ministration of publio affairs to unite
with us.
AL ZD2BER, Chairman.

Brash Making.
An up-town grocer was hanging a
bunch, of scrubbing brushes on a hook
as a young man was passing.
'How much do the brushes sell
for?' he asked.
"Ten cents."
"How much do thev cost?"
'Who?"
"You."
"Eighty-five cents a dozen."
"How much do they cost tho man
ufacturer?' "As near six cents each as you can
figure it The wooden back costs one
cent; the work of securing the wispj
to the back, one cent; the com two
cents; the wire, the finishing, and bo
on amount to one cent and" eleven
twelfths.7' "How fast does the brush-maker
accumulate wealth at one cent a
brush for wiring the wisps to the
backs;"
4 Not very rapidly. The lightning
man, sober and steady, can make
twelve dozen in a day of ten hours.
He is the exceptionally fast man. He
ties ten thousand knots to do it.
Ordinary men make from eight to ten
dozen. Live on that? Well, the
wife can make four dozen, and the
children can help. It is indoor work,
and not what is called hard work.
They work at home. Plenty of people
in. New York are worse off than the
brush-makers." If. Y. Sun
The Persian army seems to be mod
eled on a plan almost as unique as
the French Chamber or our own
navy. It has been organized under a
mixed staff of officers, belonging to
nearly every European nationality,
each ot whom has been permitted to
train his men in his own language
and according to his own ideal plan.
When the regiments parade together
the result may be easier imagined
than described. First march past
regiments to the tunes of "Eule
Britannia," and "Yankee Doodle," re
spectively. Next cornea one of the
solemn strains of "Die Wacht am
Ehein," while a fourth shuffles past
to the Btirring strains of the "Mar
seillaise.' "With Austrian, Bussian
and Italian regiments, one just be
hind tho other, marching to a differ
ent tune, the result must be, as a
person lias said, "exquisitely ludi-
orous."

The Cosiing Habvest. No, my
boy, no man ever reaped a harvest of
No. 1 wheat from a sowing of wild
oats. Oh, yes, yon can plow the oats
under and put in a crop of wheat
later, and you may get a splendid
crop, too, but even the wheat won't
grade po high, because the oats will
ge mixed in with it And when you
tnrash it will take more time, and
winnowing and cleaning, to grade the
wheat up ten times over, than it
would to have put the twenty-acre
lot in wheat in the first place. Missed
lota of fun? Cert And h e-e-aps of
