The Benublican voters of the state, without regard to past political differ ences, who are in favor oil elevating and dignifying American labor, giving free popular education to the masses of the people, effectually protecting all human rights in every section of our common country, and who desire to promote friendly feeling and permanent harmony throughout the state bv maintaining a government pledged to these objects and privileges, are cordially invited to unite in selecting delegates to the Be publican state convention. SOL. HIKSCH, Chairman. Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1834. Tat DEMOCBATIC STATE CONVENTION. The state Democratic convention is hereby called to meet at Dalles City, on Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10 o'clock a. m., for the purpose of nominat ing candidates for the following effices: Judge of tbe supreme court, three presi dential electors, representative in the lower house of congress and district officers for the Beveral judicial districts, and to select six delegates to the national Democratic convention, and generally to to do such other busines as may of right come before such convention. The committee deem it fitting to pre sent to tho Democratic voters of the state the following consideratiens: "We see approaching an election of moBt vital import to our commonwealth in all its interests, both public and pri vate. Deeming honesty the beat policy, and in striking contrast with tbe course of the opposition party, we nave named an early day for the assembling of tho state convention. Our principles as a party will then be enunciated, and our candi dates placed in the field subject to the approval or consideration of the body politic. The variance in the vote of this state during the past few years, and especially the very close contest in the presidential election of 1880, gives us much hope that, notwithstanding our present minority, with harmony in our ranks, and a well directed exertion of our strength, wo shall carry off the palm of victory. But to insure this end it ib imperative that all Democrats should contribute their undi vided support nnd hoarly co-operation, not only in the actual canvass but in its very initiation the county primaries. We do not presume to tfespass upon tho precincts of our popular convention, but do earnestly invoke all members of our party to put aside past differences and personal antagonisms, to unite in har monious action in the various primaries ana to send full delegations of represen tative men to attend the state convention. "We have deemed it fitting to reduce the number of delegates, in the hope of secur ing the personal attendance of those to be chosen. "We especially recommend the formation of local clubs, where prac ticable, throughout tbe state. Believing that the success of the De mocracy is the welfare of the people, we cordially invite all persons, regardless of past political affiliations, who favor sim plicity, economy and frugality in the ad ministration of public affairs to unite with us. Gordon, one of the best-known ma terializing mediums of this country, was captured to-night in the midst of his manifestations by reporters of the Philadelphia papers. Gordon has been carrying on quite a thriving bus iness of late in the manufacture of spirits, who he claims are those of persons present at his seances. He nas made many dupes who have firm ly believed that the figures represent ed by Gordon are those of departed friends and relatives. One of the re porters got into his confidence sever al weeks ago, and has been playing the detective ever since. A warrant was sworn out by him before a mag istrate to-day, charging Gordon and his assistant, Hugh Kerr, with ob taining money under false and fraud ulent representations, with intent to cheat and defraud, and conspiracy. In company with two fellow journal ists, the warrant was served. Gordon was caught while personating Esther Hazard, the deceased daughter of Thomas B. Hazard, who owns a fine country seat outside of Newport, R. L, and who is spending the winter in Philadelphia. Gordon was dressed in white draperies, and was in his stocking feet Underneath the out side drapery he wore a nightgown over his trousers, and shirt Under neath his robes and wound around his legs was a red knit shawl, which he had previously worn for his father, and dematerialized before the audi ence. In the cabinet were found wigs, beards, silk robes, head-dresses, mos quito netting which he had used for lace shawls, ribbons, spirit jewelry, satin Blippers and other parapher nalia enough to set up a first-class spiritualist in the business. Several in the audience who had previously recognized departed friends admitted that they had been duped, and thanked tho newspaper men for the benefit rendered the community. Hazard said that he saw the face of his daugh ter gradually change into that of Gor don, and claimed that the spirit had taken possession of the medium. He could not explain the' clothing, how ever, which Gordon said the spirits brought up from the store below. The prisoners will be arranged before a magistrate to-morrow. There is a droll side to all things even in the calamities and disasters that overtake humanity. This has more than once been illustrated by the flood sufferers of the east One instance shows how strong is the ruling passion of the day that is so tenderly fostered by the printing press and communicating facilities of this wonderful age. Those in charge of one. of the flood boats reported that the inhabitants of a submerged Ohio town asked first for the, news, next for ropes with which to .and or their houses, and then for somethirg to eat REPUBLICAN COUNT!
