from each county, and one delegate for
every 125 votes, and one for every frac
tion over one-half thereof, cast for Hon.
M. C. George, congressman, at the last
general election.
The oommitteo recommend that the
primaries be held on Saturday, the 12th
of April, and the county conventions on
Tuesday, the-22d day of April, unless
otherwise ordered by the proper county
central committees.
The committee earnestly recommend
that the delegates elected to the state
convention attend in person, and if not
convenient for them to bo attend person
ally, that they send their proxies by
electors or the county they represent.
The Republican voters of the state,
without regard to past political differ
ences, who are in favor of elevating and
dignifying American labor, giving free
popular education to the masses of the
people, effectually protecting all human
rights in every section of our common
country, and who dc3ire to promote
friendly feeling and parmanent harmony
throughout the state by maintaining a
government pledged to these objects
and privileges, are cordially invited to
unite in selecting delegates to the .Re
publican state convention.
SOL.HIRSCH, Chairman.
Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1854.
THE DEMOCRATIC STATE CONTENTION.
The state Democratic convention is
hereby called to meet at Dalles City, on
Thursday, tho 17th of April next, at 10
o'clock A. M., for the purpose of nominat
ing candidates for the following effices:
Judge of the supreme court, three presi
dential electors, representative in the
lower house of congress and district
officers for the several judicial districts,
and to select six delegates to the national
Democratic convention, and generally to
to do such other busincs as may of right
come before such convention.
The committee deem it fitting to pre
sent to the Democratic voters of the state
the following consideratiens:
We see approaching an election of
most vital import to our commonwealth
in all its interests, both public and pri
vate. Deeming honesty the bst policy, and
in striking contrast with the course of
the opposition party, we nave named an
early day for the assembling of the state
convention. Our principles as a party
will then be enunciated, and our candi
dates placed in the field subject to tho
approval or consideration of the body
politic.
The variance in tho vote of this state
during the past few years, and especially
the very close contest in the presidential
election of loSU, gives us much hope tuat.
notwithstanding our present minority,
with harmony in our ranks, and a well
directed exertion of our strength, we
shall carry off the palm of victory. But
to insure this end it is imperative that all
Democrats should contribute their undi
vided support and hearty co-operation,
not only in the actual canvass but in its
very initiation the county primaries.
Wo do not presume to trespass upon tho
precincts of our popular convention, but
do earnestly invoke all members of our
party to put aside past differences and
personal antagonisms, to "unite in har
monious action in the various primaries
and to send full delegations of represen
tative men to attend the state convention.
We have deemed it fitting to reduce the
number of delegates, in the hope of secur
ing the personal attendance of those to
bo chosen. We especially recommend
the formation of local club's, where prac
ticable, throughout the state,
Believing that the success of the De
mocracy is the welfare of tho people, wo
cordially invite all persons, regardless of
past political affiliations, who favor sim
plicity, economy and frugality in the ad
ministration of publio affairs to unite
with us.
AL ZIEBER, Chairman.
P. H. D'Aucv, Secretary.

Taller than I by nt least half n head
He surelv must be, with n face bright
and kind;
His eyes I'd prefer of a violet bine,
His hnir a light brown, or a very warm

Ho must sing a fine tenor and dance

And tell us good stories as over were told.
And of course no remarks that tire

And I'd like him to always be stylishly

Theyounaman I marry" she said
she said.
And then the moid married she did
she did
A three score old fellow, much shorter
than she,
Who wore a short wig that but awkward
ly hid
A pate that no balder could possibly
be;
And he never said anything witty or
wise,
And he smoked a clay pipe, and from
morning till night
In his mouth held of strongest tobacco
a quid;
And he dressed but enough, ho had two

And she married him gladly she did

Sherman's Wrath.
A friend of his i3 reported to have
said to him one day, "General, if it
were not that your wife is a Catholic
nothing could keep you out of the
"White House:" He turned around,
livid with suppressed rage, and bring
ing his old iron fiat down on the desk
before him exclaimed, in thunder
tenes: 4,Tho you say I Yes, and
if it were not that my wife is a Cath
olic and has been placarded all over
the country on account of it I would
never accept the office either. It may
become necessary to show these po
litical dudes that I can get there just
as well with a Catholic wife as if she
were a Methodist If they bother
me much more I will show the
whelps what I can do. The same
dumbheads and scandal mongers
called me crazy after Shiloh and pre
dicted that I would get used up be
tween Atlanta and the sea; but I got
there, them!" -St. Zouis Letter.
The old German emperor celebrated
his eighty-seventh birthday on Satur
day. He has seen in his time many
vicissitudes in the empire which he
has ruled for more than half a cen
tury. He was present at the battle
of "Waterloo, as a kind of poetic
justice for the savage blows and in
sults which Napoleon had dealt out
to Prussia. The great conquerer left
the country in such a demoralized
condition that a recent writer pithily
remarks: "Fiom 1815 to 1S6I no
Prussian array looked a serious army
in the face." It is the chief glory of
Yon Moltke. Bismarck and the em
peror that in the life of a single gen
eration they breathed the breath of
life into the German army and made
it the model organization in the
world, so perfectly equipped that in
the hand of a master it reduced to
subjection a powerful nation like
France, in a campaign which was
Napoleonic for its brevity and de
cisiveness. History can furnish few
parallels of three men, each auto
cratic in his way, working together in
harmony, without jealousy, all in
spired by the common love of coun-
try- .
