ASTORIA, OREGON:
SATUKDAY,
.1SIA1.CH 29. 18S4
A Boston man has invented a ma
chine for cutting the coupons off
bonds. "It will be a great boon to
editors.
Theke is no danger of the coming
conventions at Chicago being post
poned on account of a lack of candi
dates for1 the presidency.
It is now reported that Gen. Grant
reeeived 5,003 -for his article on the
Panama canal, "which appeared in the
North American Review about two
years ago.
'. .' 1 . .
That was a clever action of Presi
dent Arthur's to transfer Sargent
from Berlin to St, Petersburg, and no
neater way out of an ugly state of
affairs could have been devised.
Tee Oregouia7ithinka that Blaine
couldn't carry New York. There are
a good many "thoughtful and inde
pendent voters," however, in that
state that would give him the assist
ance of their votes.
AcoobdIng "to, Astronomer Proctor
the planet Jupiter is in the state that
the earth ws3 34,000,000 years agr.
His assertion will be believed if
Misj SusaaB. Anthony will corrob
orate it
The three prominent candidates fcr
the Democratic presidential nomina
tion are S. J.-Tilden, aged 76; Joseph
E. McDonald, aged 67, and Henry B.
Payne, aged 73. The lucky man will
be the one who gets the nomination
for the vice presidency.
The Chinese embassy are very lib
eral patrons of the telegraph. Re
cently .a dispatch was sent from
Washington which cost 81,200. The
route is by the way of England to
Eussia. The dispatches are all sent
in numerical cipher. At a station in
Russia these numerical ciphers are
translated into Chinese letters which
correspond to the numerals.
The newest thing in newspapers
oomes from Paris. It is a journal
called Lt Martin. Its peculiarity as
claimed by its proprietors is that it
changes its politics every day. That
is the editorials favor different politi
cal parties, juet as the exponents, the
best writers of the different political
parties see fit to supply written
opinions. This kind of newspapers
are yet unknown in the United States,
but a very ugly and yet very appro
priate name is usually applied to
them.
It is proposed to build in Dakota a
monument in memory of the Home
stead law and its author. The shaft
iB to be 160 feet tall (a foot for each
acre in a homestead entry), divided
into five parts above the pedestal (one
division for each year during which
the settler must ieside on his land in
order to perfect his title), and erected
on a pedestal forty feet square, "rep
resenting the four legal sub-divisions
of a hbmestead." A figure of Co
lumbia delivering the patent to a set
tler will surmount the shaft Stat
ues of public men who were espe
cially instrumental in securing the
enactment of the law, are to be
grouped about the base. The asso
ciation having the matter in charge
asks congress to grant a township of
the public domain in aid of the fund.
Beeoheb "has proed by bis elo
quent speech recently that if be has
no Irish blood in his veins be haa a
good deal of Celt in his soul He
said many things which the convivial
assembly could laugh at and as many
more that they could applaud, but
one trait of self-denial and family
love whioh he praised, real as it is,
does not often win such recognition.
Said he: 'When I look at those -who
come over to America and I perceive
how they work and toil, spending the
least and wearing tho least that thev
may set the, stream of gold to flowing
aoross the seas to father or mother
and to bring brother or sister to his
side, I --cannot sufficiently honor
them." This has the ring of broad
minded - appreciation in it Those
who mafce indictments against the
entire Itisfr race on the acts of a
handf uPbf desperadoes alleged to be
Irishmen could before making sweep
ing generalizations" follow Mr.
Beecher's example and study the mat
ter a little more closely.
The Democratic party in congress
is, according to all accounts, as
tally divided on the tariff bill as the
membersoT Dr. ATarvin'a church are
with respect to the merits or demerits
of that very peculiar case. In the
latter bitter controversy, however,
there are symptoms of an amicable
arrangement The rival factions are
trying to sit down together and rea
son it out if .The protection and free
trade Democrats should imitate their
excellent example. This is a hazard
ous time for, quarreling. It is leap
year, whenl'the land should be full of
sunfhine and. peace; and a president
will be elected in November, upon
which momentous event may depend,
although we doubt it, the fa'to of the
country. jMr, Morrison, Mr. Oar
lisle and MrHurd are making a great
deal of trouble. The old Democratic
party divided'onthe slavery question,
and has bfeenoutof "power during a
quarter of a century. Perhaps it
means to repeat history -and go into
hostile qp&p? on the tariff issue.
