In one of New York's shabbiest streets, in the basement of a lurje tenement house, a German and his wife deal in second-hand food, which is eagerly bought by the neighboring poor. The writer recently visited this unique establishment. In the front room a crowd of purchasers were waiting, cans and money in hand. Th1 German was in the back room emptying barrels upon a big, hare pine table. Occasionally a box or barrel proved too heavy, and his wife joined her strength to that of her husband's. She is a big, jolly German woman, rosy and ueaL On the table was a constantly growing heap of meat Some was cold ami some was steaming. The heap was made up of fragments of everything that is included under the terms of fish, flesh and fowL It was not pretty to look at,-but a moment's study of the heap showed that every fragment in the mound was of good origin, aud had been well cooked. Ribs of beef with clumps of meat attached to the bones; skeletons of ducks, geese, chickens and game birds in the same condition; chops of veal mutton and pork, whole and cooked to a turn; slices of cold corned beef, cold roast mutton and beef, cold ham and tongue all this and probably as many other things beside were in the heap. The foremost little ones in the impatient crowd had to crane their necks around the door frame to see the nature of this second heap, and were charmed to see iced cake," jelly rolls and tapioca pudding. The man filled the deep and broad sill of the window1 with cans. Some were full of mashed potatoes, some with pota toes and turnips mixed, and some with cabbage. The woman was heap ing up slices of bread, ends of loayes, little cakes, tea biscuits, rolls, slices of costly cake, boiled and baked po tatoes in their jackets, crullera, gin gerbread, doughnuts, Boston brown bread and cracker?. Her heap grew so tall that an avalanche formed audi food rolled on the floor, bhe was obliged to leave some barrels simi larly stocked without emptying them. Suddenly she faced the group of chil dren, and they began to shout and scramble for the doorway, demanding to be waited on. There were plates in some of the baskets and tin pails in others. The man tossed in the ,.- .q !, r.w...r nl.r.0lI l.ron rolls and cake in until the baskets were loaded. Both used their hands. "You see," said the German, "that the food is clean and good. I buy it from the hotels. First-class houses never carve a rib after it is impossi ble to get nice-looking pieces from it. They never beat things up -the sec-; must dock you four cents a pound on ond day or serve them the day after that last lot of butter, and don't want they are cooked. These potatoes I j any more at any price -it smells too took out of the kettle of tho Firth much of the stable." Now the ad Avenue hotel. That's where the pud- j dressee of that letter has gained a ding came from. X am expected at a . trade; evidently then his butter -was certain time, and I go right in and not always "number four;" ergo, it clean out the warming pans, all this needs not remain so. Whence, I con is what are called 'cold pieces' and I elude, that among the implements middlings' in tbe hotel trade. In employed by No. 1 butter makers, be some houses the "help is fed on this, long the barn sho el, scrub pail, wash It is not what is left from the plates i board and hand-basin, and that in of the guests. That goes to the swill i proportion to their non uso the possi man. In sell ing I calculate to give enough for twenty-five cents to keep a family of four or five a whole day. I sell as I charge ' little as ten cents' worth about four cents a pound for the meat, ten cents a gallon for the vege tables, and I sell as much bread for three cents as I can buy in a bakery for fifteen. For twenty-five cents I give meat enough for three meals for . i- -. ? . . I some vegetables, aud then bread and cake enough for all day. Some of my customers are very particular, and want things nice. X pick tnem out nice things. Some want more cake and pudding, some want only meat, and so it goes. For a quarter they not only get as much weight of food as a dollar will buy, but they get the very best that can be bought quality as well as quantity. It is also cooked in the best manner. I have nothing left oyer. I don't open this plaoe till I finish collecting and drive up with my load. It is always after 8 o'clock at night. In a very little while I have sold it all.' A Fox's Scheme. Early in the morning of the 23d ultimo a valuable hound owned by Samuel Wardwell, of Oxford, struck the hot trail of a fox. Mr. Wardwell recently refused to take $100 for this houncL Toward noon, after a long, hard chase, the for and hound were than running along the railroad track nearMt. Bocky Church. The rum ble pf a coming train was heard. As soon as the locomotive swung around the curve, the fox seemed to give out. "The poor fox," said the engineer, "could hardly drag one leg after the other. It staggered along a few yards and then" fell all in a heap quivering as if in the agonies of death. Boused to one despairog effort by the Hearing cries of the hound, it rose to its feet, staggered wildly, and fell all in a heap right in front of the engine. The dog was about to grab it, when suddenly the fox gave a tremendous jump. -passing over one corner of thH cowcatcher out of danger. The un sjHtry bound was caught and ground to pieces beneath the wheels of the on-rushing train." "That darned fox," added the fireman, "actually looked around and grinned as the train pasa dhim.' Then the fox trotted calm ly away, evidently seeking for another $100 hound to decoy beneath the death wheels. Argus. An Adroit Escape from Prison. Lexoib N. C, March 6. One of the most adroit escapes known in criminal history was effected to-day by Lucky Joe "Wilson, a famous chief of a gang of desperadoes infesting this state. Wilson was after many flights caught, and after a trial sen tenced to ten years in the peniten tiary. Tuesday his counsel obtained an appeal to tho supreme court Early this morning the warden of the jail entered his cell and found Lucky Joe lying on his mattress, which vras suffused with bipod, as was also tho prisoner's shirt and mouth." His eyes were wide open and staring, his jaws fallen and his limbs cold. Help was summoned, and tho body was carried from the cell into an out house, and laid out for burial and placed in a plain coffin. The mother and sister of the de ceased stood by the coffin, and wailed over his untimely end. At dusk this evening, when every one had left the apartment save his sister, she was horrified to see the corpse rise from the coffin, put its hands ominously to its lips and bolt from the room into ; the night She screamed and fainted. ' The ruse was not discovered until' an hour after, and Lucky Joe had I succeeded in eluding pursuit A visit to" his cell sho.ved how artfully the escape had been planned. Wil son had killed a chicken and saturat ed himself with the blood, and rip ping open the mattress ooncealedthe chicken in it Ho had soraped in a lot of snow and ice from the coll win dow, aud keot his hands and feet well frozen in it up to the time when he i,i rtct-JL ; rt. ,..1,. U heard footsteps in the corridor, when he had thrown it in a bucket There upon when the jailor entered he found the man's feet and hands so cold as to leave no doubt of the pris oner's death.
