The committee recommend that the
primaries be held on Saturday, the 12th
of April, and the county conventions on
Tuesday, the 22a day of April, nnless
otherwise ordered by the proper county

people, effectually protecting all human
rights in every section of our common
country, and who desire to promote
friendly feeling and permanent harmony
throughout the state by maintaining a
government pledged to these objects
and privileges, are cordially invited to

publican state convention.
SOL. HIRSCH, Chairman.
Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1884.
IHiLDESlOfUATIC STATK C0XTEXTI0.V.
The state Democratic convention is
hereby called to meet at Dalles City, on
Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10
o'clock a. m., for the purpose of nominat
ing candidates for the following effices:
Judge of the supreme court, three presi
dential electors, representative in the
lower house of congress and district
officers for the several judicial districts,
and to select six delegates to the national
Democratic convention, and generally to
to do such other busines as may of right
come before such convention.
The committee deem it fitting to pre
sent to the Democratic voters of the state
the following consideratiens:
We see approaching an election of
most vital import to our commonwealth
in all its interests, both public and pri
vate. Deeming honesty the best policy, and
in striking contrast with the course of
the opposition party, we have named an
early day for the assembling of the state
convention. Our principles as a party
will then be enunciated, and our candi
dates placed in the field subject to the
approval or consideration of the body
politic
The variance in the vote of this state
during the past few years, and especially
the very close contest in the presidential
election of 1880, gives us much hope that,
notwithstanding our nresent minority.
with harmony in our ranks, and a well
directed exertion of our strength, we
shall carry off the palm of victory. But
to insure this end it is imperative that all
Democrats should contribute their undi
vided support and hoarty co-operation,
not only in the actual canvass but in its
very initiation tho county primaries.
We do not presume to trespass upon the
Srecmcts ot our popular convention, but
o earnestly invoke all members of our
party to put aside past differences and
personal antagonisms, to unite in har
monious action in the various primaries
and to send full delegations of represen
tative men to attend the state convention.
We have deemed it fitting to reduce the
number of delegates, in the hope of secur
ing the personal attendance of those to
be chosen. We especially recommend
the formation of local clubs, where prac
ticable, throughout the state.
Believing that the success of the De
mocracy is the welfare of the people, we
cordially invito all persons, regardless of
past political affiliations, who favor sim
plicity, economy and frugality in the ad
ministration of public affairs to unite
with us.
AL ZLEBEB, Chnirman.
P. H. D'Abcv, Secretary.

The Hotel of the Future.
The following is a translation of an
article in a Berlin paper, which will
convey an idea of the German esti
mates of tho coming American hetel:
"The latest American progress
in building will be the mammoth
hotel soon to bs erected on the Shell
road, St Augnstiue, Florida. This
enormous hotel is to have a frontage
of three miles and a denth of six
mles; tie height is stv u'y seven
stones; it will measure 3,S0 feet
from the ground floor to the roof. The
hotel will have no stairs, but 500 bal
loons will always be ready to take
guests up-stairs "to their rooms. No
waiters are to be employed, but vis
itors will be served with a newly pat
ented automaton put up in every
bedroom, which will do all shaving,
shampooing, etc. "Suppose the guest
requires hot water; the automaton
will be able to call down stairs, "A
bucket of water for room No. 13,017,"
and the water will be up in seven
seconds by a patent elevator. Half
an hour before the table d'hote, in
stead of ringing bells, a gun (24V
pounder) will be fired on each floor to
call the guests to get ready for their
meals. The tables in each dining
room will measure four miles each,
attendant being performed by twelve
waiters on horseback either side of
the table. Music during the table
dhote will be performed gratis by
eight bands of seventy-seven men
each. For the convenience of visitors
a railway will be built on each floor,
as well as a telegraphoffice. The price
of one bed will be from one to ten
dollars. The cost of this building is
estimated to be S6S0,000,0O0. The
billiard room will contain nine
hundred American.ninety nineFrench
and one English table. As most of
the visitors are expected to be Amer
icans, the billiard room will be fitted
out with a spittoon of one hundred
feet in circumference.
"A wonderful electrical girl" in
Georgia, named Lulu Hurst, can, by
merely placing her finger tips on the
back of a chair, violently upset a 200
pound man who may besttting on the
piece of furniture. She may possess
some supernatural power, but she is
no more wonderful than scores of
girls right here in this neighborhood.
Some young ladies in this town pos
ses? such marvelou? attractive powe s

of from one to sixteen miles two and
three nights a week.
By a new law in Arkansas no sa
