George, congressman, st the last general election. The committee .recommend that the primaries be held on Saturday, the 12th of April, and the county conventions on Tuesday, the 22d day of April, unless otherwise ordered by the proper county central committees. The committee earnestly recommend that the delegates elected to the state convention attend in person, and if not convenient for them to so attend person ally, that they send their proxies by electors of the county they represent. The Benublican voters of the state, without regard to past political differ ences, who are in favor of elevating and dignifying American labor, giving free popular education to the masses of the people, effectually protecting all human rights in every section of our common country, and who desire to promote friendly feeling and permanent harmony throughout the state by maintaining a government pledged to these objects and privileges, are cordially invited to unite in selecting delegates to the Re publican state convention. SOL. HLBSCH, Chairman. Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1884. THE DEMOCUATIC STATE COXVEMIO.V. The state Democratic convention is hereby called to meet at Dalles City, on Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10 o'clock a. m., for the purpose of nominat ing candidates for the following effices: Judge of the supreme court, three presi dential electors, representative in the lower house of congress and district officers for the several judicial districts, nnd to select six delegates to the national Democratic convention, and generally to to do such other busiues as may of right come before such convention. The committee deem it fitting to pre sent to the Democratic voters of the state the following consideratiens: We see approaching an election of most vital import to our commonwealth in all its interests, both public and pri vate. Deeming honesty the best policy, and in striking contrast with the course of the opposition party, we have named an early day for the assembling of the state convention. Our principles as a party will then be enunciated, and our candi dates placed-in tho field subject to the approval or consideration of the body politic. The variance in the vote of this state during the past few years, and especially the very close contest in the presidential election of 1880, gives us much hope that, notwithstanding our present minority, with harmony in our ranks, and a well directed exertion of our strength, we shall carry off the palm of victory. But to insure this end it is imperative that all Democrats should contribute their undi vided support and heartv co-operation, not only in the actual canvass but in its very inuiauon me county primaries. We do not presume to trespass upon tne precincts of our popular convention, but do earnestly invoke all members of our party to put aside past dinerences ana personal antagonisms, to- unite in har monious action in the various primaries and to send fall delegations 01 represen tative men to attend the state convention. We have deemed it fitting to reduce the number of delegates, in the hope of secur ing the personal attendance of those to be chosen. We especially recommend the formation of local clubs, where prac ticable, throughout the state. Believing that the success of the De mocracy is the welfare of the people, we cordially invite all persons, regardless of past political affiliations, who favor sim plicity, economy and frugality in the ad ministration 01 pumic auairs to unite with us. AIi ZIEBER, Chairman. P. H. D'Abcy, Secretary. DEMOCRATIC CALL. The English press, in very serious tones, are calling attention to the fact that many of the dynamite schemes just now inflicted such a scare with our British brethren, have their advo cates, if not promoters, in this coun try, and from the expressions used pi rxniUing this to be done, is regarded as au int2rna iom' outrage. We are always de'.igh.ed with these homilies iromour trans Atl-mtic cousins. It is such a satisfaction to contrast theie preachings w.th former prac tices that we feel c jnstrained to re peat a little matter of history, that saeins in d mger of being forgotten. In 1S5S the English nation was upon terms of perfect amity with France, ana with ner emperor, Napoleon 1JL "With this their relations, Orsini and hi3 confederates made a most in famous attempt to assassinate 3Tapo leon by exploding bombs under his carriage. Theemperor escaped, but something like twenty unsuspecting citizens were killed and a great num ber wounded. The enormity of this outrage roused, in the Jb rench government, as well as the people, the highest degree of indignation, and when it was shown, as it conclusively was, that the whole scheme was planned in Lon don and the bombs used manufac tured there, the French government demanded some action upan the part of England which would prevent the repetition of such open attempts. No fair-minded man could doubt the justice of such a demand, acd Lord Palmerston, then at the head of the British government, brought in a bill intended to prevent such prac tices. Tho result was such a howl from the press, people and parliament that this bill was defeated by an over whelming majority, and the ministry resigned, and in an appeal to the people upon the single question of whether England should be made the harbor for such miscreants, Palmer ston's government was utterly over thrown. So that upon tlm identical ques tion, whether England should make herself the harbor and refuge for all the European cut-throats whose sin gle purpose was assassination, her parliament and her people declared for these murderers. To be sure, in that case they only laid the plans and made the bomb3 in London under the very eye of the government, and with full knowledge of the officials. So long as these crimes were to be com mitted somewhere else it was all right, but just now, like curses of other kinds, this bomb practice is coming back to plague its former de fenders. It is a very different prop osition for a lot of evicted and out raged Irishmen in Amorica to applaud dynamite for English officials, than when bombs are manufactured in London to blow up a French em peror. At least our "English censors can see a difference, though we con fess we cannot. Wood Yard. UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE THE ASTO ria Wood Yard.
