The same being one delegate at large
from each coanty, and one delegate for
every 125 votes, and one for every frac
tion over one-half thereof, cast for Hon.
M. C. George, congressman, at the last
general election.
The committee recommend that the
primaries be held on Saturday, the 12th
of April, and the county conventions on
Tuesday, the 22d day of April, unless
otherwise ordered by tho proper county
central committees.
The committee earnestly recommend
that the delegates elected to the state
convention attend in person, and if not
convenient for them to so attend person
ally, that they send their proxies by
electors of the county they represent.
The .Republican voters of the state,
without regard to past political differ
ences, who are in favor of elevating and
dignifying American labor, giving free
popular education to the masses of the
people, effectually protecting all human
rights in every section of our common
country, and who desire to promote
friendly feeling and permanent harmony
throughout the state by maintaining a
government pledged to these objects
and privileges, are cordially invited to
unite in selecting delegates to the Re
publican state convention.
SOL. HIRSCH, Chairman.
Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1834.
THE DEMOL'KATIC STATE C0.YE'TI05.
The state Democratic convention is
herebv called to meet at Dalles City, on
Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10
o'clock x. m., for the purpose of nominat
ing candidates for the following effices:
Judge of the supreme court, three presi
dential electors, representative in the
lower house of congress and district
officers for the several judicial districts,
and to select six delegates to the national
Democratic convention, and generally to
to do such other bnsines as may of right
come before such convention.
The committee deem it fitting to pre
sent to the Democratic voters of the state
the following consideratiens:
We see approaching an election of
most vital import to our commonwealth
in all its interests, both public and pn
vate.
Dapminr honestv the best txilicv. and
ir ctrilrinn .nntroot trith tlm vnrcn nf S
the opposition party, we have named an
early day for the assembling of the state
convention. Qar principles as a party
will then be enunciated, and our candi
dates placed in the field subject to the
approval or consideration of the body
politic
The variance in the vote of this state
during the past few years, and especially
the very close contest in the presidential
election of 1880, gives us much hope that,
notwithstanding our present minority,
with harmony in our ranks, and a well-
directed exertion of our strength, we
shall carry off tho palm of victory. But
to insure this end it is imperative that all
Democrats should contribute their undi
vided support and hearty co-operation,
not only in the actual canvass but in its
very initiation the county primaries.
We do not presumo to trespass upon the
Srecincts of our popular convention, but
o earnestly invoke all members of our
party to put aside past differences and
personal antagonisms, to unite in har
monious action in tho various primaries
ana to send fall delegations of represen
tative men to attend the state convention.
"We have deemed it fitting to reduce the
number of delegates, in the hope of secur
ing the personal attendance of those to
bo chosen. We especially recommend
the formation of local clubs, where prac
ticable, throughout the state.
Believing that the success of the De
mocracy is the welfare of the people, we
cordially invite all persons, regardless of
past political affiliations, who favor sim
plicity, economy and frugality in the ad
ministration of public, affairs to unite
with us.
AL ZLEBER, Chairman.

Butter.
Those who have watched our mnr
ket quotations says the Farmer, will
have observed that "creamery" butter
is constantly quoted from 3 to 6 cents
per ponud higher than "dairy," and
this, iu turn, from C to 10 cents high
er than '"common," aud no doubt
many have wondered what practical
difference there can be between these
various tades.
"Creamery" butter is simply pure,
sweet, well made butter, no better
than is made at times by many fann
ers' wives, but it is made by persons
who, by devoting their whole time
and attention to this work alone
not making it secondary to other
household cares and by being sup
plied with even necessary appliance
for controlling temperature, cleanli
ness, etc., have acquired such skill in
it that the quality of their butter is
of perfect uniformity from one end
of the year to the other; consequent
ly, consumers know just what they
will get in buying it
'Dairy" butter is often just as good
as "creamery," but is made by persons
who are hirgely occupied by-other
duties, to which the dairy work is
secondary; consequently, there is
always a liability that some particular
lot of butter shall be a little off flavor,
owing to neglect of the cows, milk or
butter at a critical period. The large
scale upon which creamery butter is
made is one of the necessary factors
to its uniformity; it is next to impos
sible to make much butter from a
single Cow, or even from two or three
cows, because of the changes con
stantly occurring in the milk owing
to changes of food, remoteness from
calving, etc. But when milk is drawn
from two or three hundred cows,
some of which aro weekly coming in
fresh, it will be seen that one potent
cause of irregularity in the quality of
uuiter is eliminated.
'Common butter" appears on far
too many tables. It is either white,
salvy, rancid, or tainted with the
odors of unclean cellars, or all of,
these combined. Its cost of manufac
ture is as great, if not greater, than
that of the "best "creamery,'' but
through ignorance or neglect of
some of the very simple essentials of
regularity, or cleanliness iri the care
of the cows or of the milk or butter,
its quality is ruined.
"Come in here, come in here," said
Artemus "Ward one day in Boston, to
the companion walking with him.
"Come in here; we will have some
fun." It was a Boston pie bakery
which they entered a place where
pies were a specialty where pies
and nothing but pie3 were sold.
wholesale and retail, all the livelong
day. Ward approached the counter,
behind which the proprietor of the
establishment was standing, and.
prietor.
uYes, pies."
"Pies! ! P repeated the man, still
more dumbfounded.
"Of course pies. Have you any
pies?"
"Pies! ! !" gasped the shopman
once more, gazing at "Ward as if ho
thought him an escaped lunatic.
"Oh, well, if you haven't got any
pies I'll inquire somewhere else; come
on Jack," and he marched his friend
out of tho shop again before the
salesman could recover his wits.
