, Why should tin two parties bother
about platforms. "What they need
are votes.
Massachusetts is about to pass a
law abolishing the poll-tax qualifica
tion for voters in thai state.
The average price of farm labor
for the whole United States is S18.5S
per month, an increase of nearly
forty per cent since 1851
Resolutions by the miners of the
CcBur d'Alene: "Not a Chinaman
shall ever enter the diggings unless
he climbs a tree, with one end of a
lariat over a limb."
Imported silk now comes from New
Jersey, English pudding is made in
Delaware, French sauces are made in
Connecticut, Rhine wine is bottled In
California and American beef is raised
in England.
In Dakota married women retain
their own real and personal property,
and may make contracts, sue and be
sued, as if single. Neither husband
nor wife has any interest in the prop
erty of the other.
England's appeal to us to suppress
the dynamiters is pathetic; but it
forgets that this is the presidential
year, and we have enough to do to
suppiess the patriots who want to
save the country.
It is noted as a curious fact that
the present greatest rival of the
United States in the production of
wheat, India, is a country in which
the lauds have been worn by ages of
constant cultivation.
The house of representatives should ,
without delay j;ive its approval to the '
bill which "has passed the senate mak
ing an appropriation for the con-
struction of seven new war ships. In
the present wretched condition of
our navy we are are at the inercy on
the sea of countries as insignificant
as Chili. Prince Bismarck would not
have dared to insult our idolized
western hog if he knew that it would
bo avenged with broadsides of shot
and shelL "Without n strong navy
our hog will always be at the mercy
of the European despots. What the
German chancellor is doing to-day
may become to-morrow the policy of
Frace or England or Italy. The
American hog imperatively demands
that he have a navy for his protection.
Pkesident AfiTHURhas sent to con
gress the report of the commission
appointed to inquire into the health
of our sBsthetic American hog, with a
message in which he suggests that
this lovely animal, a million times
more important than Mr. Barnum's
white elephant, deserves the most
careful consideration of congress
"to that end if any path be legiti
mately open for removing the pro
hibition which closes important for
eign markets to those products it may
be followed, and appropriate legisla
tion devised." This is a great hog
victory. First of all there is a clean
bill of health, and, second, the shields
of King Arthur and of all the knights
of his cabinet round-table rise up to
panoply our pork. The hog, our
darling hog, hurls his defiance at
Bismarck. If the Democratic party
is wise, it will take the Cincinnati
favorite to its bosom right away.
King Arthur with lance in rest on a
hog's back next November, running
full tilt against Prince Bismarck,
may-carry the whole electoral col
lege before him.

The San Francisco Gioccr says in
beginning an editorial on the tariff
"We will take quinine to illustrate
the workings of protection." All
right! You can take quinine if you
want to. Why in the world you select
quinine when there are so many nicer
tasting things to take is what get3 us.
Nor is it quite clear how your taking
quinine is going to "illustrate the
workings of protection." Probably
the San Francisco man has got ague
and protection mixed.
Fob the first time in its history the
Republican party seems to have a
man who is stronger as a candidate
for nomination to the vice presidency
than any aspirant is for the presiden
tial nomination. Secretary Lincoln
is apparently the favorite everywhere
for the second place on the ticket,
and his name is mentioned in that
oonnnection by the friends of nearly
all the gentlemen who are under
stood to be fishing for the presidency.
The recent battle on the shores of
the Red Sea afforded the one thou
sand and first illustration of tl e
superiority of disciplined troops. Xot
quite a hundred years ago Napoleon
won victories in Egypt over just such
adversaries as the English have en
countered at Teb and Tel-el-Kebir.
Moors, Romans and Greeks, one after
the other, have fought all over the
regions of Africa, Asia and Europe in
the neighborhood of the Mediter
ranean, and trained valor has hardly
ever failed to overcome unskillful
fanaticism.
