The committee recommend that the primaries be held on Saturday, the 12th of April, and the county conventions on Tuesday, the 22i day of April, unless otherwise ordered by the proper county central committees. The committee earnestly recommend that the delegates elected to the state convention attend in person, and if not convenient for them to so attend perspn ally, that they send their proxies by electors of the county they represent. " The Republican voters of tho state, without regard to past political differ ences, who are in favor of elevatiug and dignifying American labor, giving free popular education to the masses of the people, effectually protecting all human rights in every seotion of our common country, and who desire to promote friendly feeling and permanent harmony throughout the state by maintaining a government pledged to these objects and privileges, are cordially invited to unite in selecting delegates to the Re publican state convention. SOL. HIRSCH, Chairman. Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1884. THE DKaOCKATIC STATE (0.N VESTIO.V. The state Democratic convention is hereby called to meet at Dalles City, on Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10 o'clock a. M., for the purpose of nominat ing candidates for the following effices: Judge of the supreme court, three presi dential electors, representative in the lower house of congress Htid district officers for the several judicial districts, and to select six delegates to the national Democratic convention, and generally to to do.such other busines as may of right come before such convention. The committee deem it fitting to pre sent to the Democratic voters of the state the following consideratiens: We see approaching an election of most vital import to our commonwealth in all its interests, both public and pri vate. Deeming honesty the best policy, and in striking contrast with tho course of the opposition party, we have named an early day for the apsembling of the state convention. Our principles as a party will then bo enunciated, and our candi dates placed in the field subject to the approval or consideration or tno body politic Tho variance in the vote of this state during tho past few years, and especially the very close contest in tho presidential election of 18S0, gives us much hope that, notwithstanding our present minority, with harmony in our rjmks, and a well directed exertion of our strength, wo shall carry off the palm of victory. But to insure this end it is imperative that nil Democrats should contribute their undi vided support and hearty co-oporation, not only in tho actual canvass but in its very initiation tho county primaries. We do not presume to trespass upon tho precincts of our popular convention, but do earnestly invoke ull members of our party to put aside past differences and personal antagonisms, to nnite in har monious aotion in the various primaries and to send full delegations of represen tative men to attend the state convention. We have deemed it fitting to reduce the number of delegates, in tiie hope of Heour ing the personal attendance of those to be chosen. We especially recommend the formation of local clubs, where prac ticable, throughout the state. Believing that the success of the De mocracy is the welfare of the people, we cordially invito all persons, regardless of past political affiliations, who favor sim plicity, economy and frugality in the ad ministration of public affairs to unite WllU UH. It was at n dinuer, mainly of rail road men, recently, where- everybody was called on foV a sneeah." Mr. Simon Stevens, lato president of the , Tehanntepec Eailway and Canal com pany, responded lmmorously. apropos of a legal yam that had just been related, told the following as a true stery: "When I lived down in Pennsyl vania thirty odd years ago I knew James Buchanan pretty well. It was years before he was president; he was merely a prominent lawyer wno prac t.ctd in the courts of the county. One day. he asked three or four of his rich eliints home with him to dinner, among them Henry Musselman, a thriving German farmer from the next town. Judge Hopkins, I think, was at the table that day, too. It was a handsome table; the" fine damask table-cloth reached nearly to the floor. They had all been helped to turkey, sweet pota toes, cranberry sauce, and tho trim mings, ana were preparing to assault the .repast when Musselmcn, who had set his plate very close to th9 edge of the table, upset it, hot gravy and all, into his lap. He sprang up in morti fication and anguish and made for the door, mopping his hot fc.ee with his gravy-soaked napkin and ejaculating in broken fashion. In another instant there was a general start of dismay around the table, as if they felt the foundations of the earth giving away. For Musselman, who came in town on horseback, had accidently hooked his spur firmly into the tablecloth as he turned, and as he rushed out of the door he dragged the whole dinner to the fp-or with a jerk! When Buch anan htd another uinner cooked and Musselman tried to apologize he said he wished he understood seventeen languages. Modern Warfare. The recent viotory of the British forces under General Graham over Osman Dignia has the appearance of a slaughter. The British stood off and mowed the natives down with long-range guns. The few casualties reported are rather in the result of accident than of well directed pur pose. The bulk of Osman Digma's troop3 were armed with spears. The battle may be compared to a duel be tween two men, one armed, with a dirk-knife and the other with a pistol, the latter to choose the distance. 2sTo possible skill in the use of the knife would avail against the pistol at the usual rtnge. This is the kind of much of the fighting done of late in Africa. They routed the forces of Arabi Bey in the same way. Correspondents in tho British camp describe the British as "stepping for ward as if holding a parade." Of course, an enemy held by long-range guns at a distance wonld be power less for harm. Not much courage is required to shoot coolly at an ehemy a mile off, whose arms were only use", ful at close quarters. A few of the Arabs were armed with Kemington rifles, but the men were uninstructed in their use. Numbers do not count in contests of this kind. Mrs. F. G. Kellogg, 50 F. 8Gth St says the New York Morning Journal, was partially paralyzed, and lay for seven days in convulsions. She was unable to leave her bed, and was as helpless as a child. She was induced to try St Jacobs Oil as a last chance. She improved from the first applica tion, and by its continued use, she has recovered. FRANK AND CLEAR.
