THE DEMOCRATIC STATE CONVENTION.
The stato Democratic convention is
hereby called to meet at Dalles City, on
Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10
o'clock a. m., for tho purpose of nominat
ing candidates for tho following effices:
Judge of the supreme court, three presi
dential electors, representative in the
lower house of congress and district
officers for the several judicial districts,
and to select six dele, ites to the national
Democratic contention, and generally to
to do such other businesas may of right
come before such convention.
The committee deem it fitting to pre
sent to the Democratic voters of the state
the followine consideratiens:
We see approaching an election of
most vital import to our commonwealth
in all its interest', both public and pri
vate. Deeming honesty tho best policy, anil
in striking contrast with the course of
the opposition party, w- have named an
early day for the assembling of tho state
convention. Our principles as a party
will then be enunciated, and our candi
dates placed in the field subject to the
approval or consideration of the body
politic.
I The variance m the vote of this state
during the past few years, and especially
J tho very cloe contest in the presidential
election of 1&&0. gives us much hope that,
notwithstanding our proM.nt minority,
with harmony in our ranks, and a well
directed exertion of our strength, we
shall carry off tho palm of victory. But
to insure this end it is imperative that all
Democrats should contribute their undi
vided sunnort and hearty c .-operation,
not only in the activl c iiivnss but in its
I verv initiation the county prinnnes.
j We do not presume to trespass upon tuo
i precincts of our populur contention, but
do earnestly invoke all members of our
party to put aside past differences and
J personal antagonisms, to nuite in har
monious action in the various primaries
j ana to send full delegations of rr presen
I tative men to attend the state convention,
j Wo have deemed it fitting to reduce the
1 number of delegates, in the hope of stcur
, iug the personal attendance of those to
' be chosen. We especially recommend
tho formation of local clubs, where prac
' ticable. tbrouchout the state.
Uelievmg that the success ot tlio no
mocracy is the welf are of tho people, wo
cordially invito all persons, regardless of
post political affiliations, who favor sim
plicity, econom;, and frugality in tho ad
ministration of public affairs to unite
with us.
