SOL. HLESCH, Chairman. Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1884. THK DEMOCRATIC STATE CONVENTION. The state Democrutic convention is Jiereby called to meet at Dalles City, on Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10 o'clock x. m., for the purpose of nominat ing candidates for the following emces: Judge of, the supreme court, three" presi dential electors, representative in the lower house of congress and district officers for the several judicial districts, and to select six delegates to the national Democratic convention, and generally to to do such other busines as may of right come before such convention. The committee deem it fitting to pre sent to the Democratic voters of the state the following consideratiens: We see approaching an election of most vital import to our commonwealth in all its interests, both public and pri vate. Deeming honesty the best policy, and in striking contrast with the course of the opposition party, we have named an early day for the assembling of the state convention. Our principles as a party will then be enunciated, and our candi dates placed in the field subject to the approval or consideration of- the body politic The variance in the vote of this state during the past few years, and especially the very close contest in the presidential election of 1880, gives us much hope that. notwunsianaing our present miuuniv, with harmony in our ranks, and a well directed exertion of our strength, we shall carry off the palm of victory. But to insure this 6nd it is imperative that all Democrats should contribute their undi vided support and hearty co-operation, not only m the actual canvass but in its very initiation the county primaries. "We do not presume to trespass upon the precincts of our popular convention, but do earnestly invoke all members of our party to put aside past differences and personal antagonisms, to units in har monious action in the various primaries and to send full delegations of represen tative men to attend the state convention. We have deemed it fitting to reduce the number of delegates, in tne hope of secur ing the personal attendance of those to be chosen. We especially recommend tho formation of local clubs, where prac ticable, throughout the state. . Believing that the success of the De mocracy is the welfare of the people, we cordially invite all persons, regardless of past political affiliations, who favor sim plicity, economy and frugality in the ad ministration of public affairs to unite with us. This season we have seen an active demand for choice butter all over the country; butter has been coming from Ohio and Illinois as well as Cal ifornia, besides which, much choice butter has been made in Washington and Oregon, for our nearest neigh bors do some irood dairying. The fact that we have a good dairy re gion and do not make our own sup ply is something that reflects upon the country and coes abroad to our discredit California supplies us with a great portion of our living, and wo go eaBt for another portion. The world asks: What do they raise in Oregon? That is a question our export returns and commercial sta tistics answer, but not so satisfac torily as we could wish. That we possess very favorable conditions for making butter is all that some peo ple will ask. There is a general an swer to be made to all this unfriend ly criticism. Our dairymen do not produce enough to enable them to pursue the business to advantage, .and those who do find a ready mar ket for their product as "gut edge" when fresh. Butter is made in the country and taken to town where merchants receive it in trade in the spring and summer and pack it after a fashion. This butter is sent to market when fresh rolls are scarce in winter, and is usually ranked as a poor article of packed. The country merchant doesn't buy it because he wants it, but to humor a customer. He does the best he cau with it and that isn't much. He is not prepared to do much. He cannot handle it to advantage. He may not have a cellar to work it over in, and if he has that won't cure the oiliness that it gath ered when coming to town in the hot sun and dust. This butter cannot help but be rancid and of course is inferior. There is a mixture of all sorts of it, good, bad and indiffer ent The merchant loses, the mer chant loses, and the consumer must have a stomach that has lost its pur ity of taste. We assert, then, that the regular Oregon dairyman is all right The irregular dairyman is commonly all wrong, it the farmers who, who makes butter, cannot send it to regu lar customers, as is the case with many good butter makers who live near the towns, then she ought to have a good spring house or cool cellar where she can handle the milk save and churn the cream, and pack and keep the butter until cold weath er brings a good market, worth at least thirty cents a pound. In the summer her melting rolls or pats go for fifteen or twenty cents, so she can double the income from that source by handling the business properly. We cannot, and need not now go into the whole scheme of making it and packing it Any good housewife can do that What we are trying to show is that the milk should be set in some proper place, a-spring house or cellar where water is procurable, then han dle everything properly and the but ter can be offered in January as good as anywhere in the world. So long as we are to have small dairies (and we should always have them, for they are as profitable as any if well han dled) wo should handle them aright and they will 'pay much better fnrit If our farmer friends will fix their wives for making butter they can sup ply the home market with a good ar ticle and not only make a profit from it, but stop this clamor we forever hear about "poor Oregon butter."
