ASTORIA, OKEGON:
WEDNESDAY MARCH 5. lbSl
THE STAR OF EMPIRE.
Shalii vre receive her? We mean
Manitoba. Away in that far north
western section of her majesty's do
minions there is serious talk of haul
ing down the banner of St George
and erecting in its place the Stars and
Stripes. England, through the
declamations of more than one of her
prime ministers, is committed to the
doctrine that if Canada wishes to
join the Union, or to set up house
keeping for herself as a nation, she
will not interpose an objection. In
the case of Manitoba it is to be pre
sumed that she will be willing to let
the erring sister go in peace. This is
leap year, and if Miss Manitoba pro
poses, we must, we suppose, accept.
She should understand, however,
that if in after years any misunder
standing should arise there can be no
such thing as a divorce.
AS USUAL.
If the ocean trade was all there
was to depend on there might be an
advantage in Sound commerce but
ships coming from England or any
Southern ports, or the Isthmus canal,
can take a tug off the Columbia and
a tow at Astoria and reach Portland
as soon as they would the Straits of
Fuca. When government does its
duty in opening up our river en
trance, and improving the channels
above Astoria, Oregon need not fear
but what we shall have our full share
of ocean trade. Willamette Farmer.
It is "those channels above Astoria'
that are the bete noir of the Farmer
No mention of the need of improving
the bar so that deep draught vessels
could come in; just improve "the
channels above Astoria," and all
would be well; the point being, as
usual, that no ship should presume to
enter the Columbia that couldn't go
to Portland.
New York is now lighted with
electricity, gets its news by electric
ity, deals on the market by electricity,
receives its quotations by electricity,
has its photographs taken by electric
ity, talks by electricity, is treated for
disease by electricity, and shortly ex
pects to be carried by the same subtle
and powerful agency. The latest ap
plication of the fluid was in Spruce
street, where an elevator is now daily
run in a six-story structure, with
electricity as the motive power. The
fluid is carried over house tops for a
distance of two blocks, and when ap
plied with full force lifts over two
thousand pounds with case. Other
elevators of the same character are
being put in, and generating centers
for the same purposes are talked of
in several parts of the city. The ex
pense is less than steam. The electric
currents ussd for any purpose are
now measured and sold through a
meter, after, the manner of gas. Mr.
Edison says his electric locomotive
will soon supplant the steam engine
on railroads. Great is electricity!
And what a thundering people we
shall be when we have everything run
by lightning!
-
The Kepublicans in the house of
representatives bitterly fought the
bill granting pensions to the heroes
of the Mexican war who are not now
on the treasury rolls, and in addition
to the veterans of the Creek. Seminole
and Black Hawk wars. This was a
very great mistake. We aie told that
according to a careful estimate the
bill it it should become a law will
take more than one hundred million
dollars out of the treasury; but what
of it? Has not the government a
great deal more money than it has
need for? Are we not becoming
richer and richer every day? The
pension roll now is if anything too
small. It should contain the name of
every man and woman in the country.
Let us all have a good-sized pension
from the government. The party
which adopts this as a plank in its
platform will be certain to win.
There is at least one country in
Europe which has resolved to clasp
our darling hog to its breast name
ly, classic Greece. It is in the eter
nal fitness of things that the land of
poets, philosophers, statesman, art.
ists, soldiers and authors, whose
fame not time itself can destroy,
should open its arms to our beautiful
porcine product. Were Byron nlivo
what an ode might he not sing! The
mountains looked on Marathon, and
Marathon looks on the sea. In future i
Marathon will be in far better busi
ness. It will not fool away its time
gazing on the waters which once bore
the fleets of the Persians while the
hog of freedom, fresh from the west
ern prairies, is rooting around its
historic base. With the hog in the
Pass of Themioyyla?, Greece can defy
the world.
"Uncle Jimmy" Fair, of Nevada,
has caused himself to bo interviewed
and says he wants to see Bayard get
the Democratic nomination for presi
dent, and that if Bayard does get it,
the Democratic national committee
will get a check from him for $500.-
000. There is nothinc small nhnnf.

Thebe are three thousand Iceland
ers in Manitoba, one-third of 'whom

they have recently played an Ice-,
landic drama in their own language.
They are industrious, well-behaved
citizens.
The Fire Underwriters of the Pa
cific coast have resolved not to grant
in any policy they may hereafter is
sue, permission for keeping fireworks,
fire-crackers or explosive bombs in
any place where they accept insur
ance. It is said that Edmunds is the sec
ond choice of Arthur's friends for the
presidency. Lincoln they think to
be the strong man for vice-president
in either case.
The sawdust and refuse of the saw
mill is now made to yield fourteen
gallons of turpentine, three to four
gallons of resin,, and a quantity of
tar per cord.
One hundred and fifty miners have
been discharged from the mines at
Cole City, Ga., to make room for a
large invoice of convicts received.
The net debt of Canada is $153,
466,714, or about $30 per capita; that
of the United States is about $30 per
capita, but is rapidly decreasing.
