from each coanty, and one delegate for
every 125 votes, and one for every frac
tion over one-half thereof, cast for Hon.
M. C. George, congressman, at the last
general election.
The committee recommend that the
primaries be held on Saturday, the 12th
of April, and the county conventions on
Tuesday, the 22d day of April, unless
otherwise ordered by the proper county
central committees.
The committee earnestly recommend
that the delegates elected to the state
convention attend in person, and if not
convenient for them to so attend person
ally, that they send their proxies by
electors of the county they represent.
The Republican voters of the state,
without regard to past political differ
ences, who are in favor of elevating and
dignifying Amerioan labor, giving free
popular education to the masses of the
people, effectually protecting all human
rights in every section of. our common
country, and who desire to promote
friendly feeling and permanent harmony
throughout the state by maintaining a
government pledged to these objects
and privileges, are cordially invited to
unite in selecting delegates to the Re
publican state convention.
SOL. HIRSCH, Chairman.
Portland, Oregon, Feb. 21, 1884.
THK DEMOCRATIC STATE CONVENTION".
The state Democratic convention is
hereby called to meet at Dalles City, on
Thursday, the 17th of April next, at 10
o'clock a, m., for the purpose of nominat
ing candidates for the following effices:
Judge of the supreme court, three presi
dential electors, representative in the
lower house of congress and district
officers for the several judicial districts,
and to select six delegates to the national
Democratic convention, and generally to
to do such other busines as may of right
come before such convention.
Tho committee deem it fitting to pre
sent to tho Democratic voters of the state
the following consideratiens:
We see approaching an election of
most vital import to our commonwealth
in all its interests, both public and pri
vate. Deeming honesty tho best policy, and
in striking contrast with the course of
the opposition party, we have named an
early day for tho assembling of the stato
convention. Our principles as a party
will then be enunciated, and our candi
dates placed in the field subject to the
approval or consideration of the body
politio.
The variance in the voto of this state
during tho past few years, and especially
the very close contest in the presidential
eleotion of 1880, gives us much hope that,
notwithstanding our present minority,
with harmony in our ranks, and a well
direoted exertion of our strength, we
shall carry off tho palm of victory. But
to insure this end it is imperative that all
Democrats should contribute their undi
vided support and hearty co-operation,
not only in the actual canvass but in its
very initiation the county primaries.
"We do not presume to trespass upon the
precincts of our popular convention, but
qo earnestly invoke all members of our
party to put aside past differences and
personal antagonisms, to units in har
monious action in the various primaries
and to send full delegations of represen
tative men to attend the state convention.
We have deemed it fitting to reduce the
number of delegates, in the hope of secur
ing the personal attendance of those to
be chosen. "We especially recommend
the formation of local clubs, where prac
ticable, throughout the state.
Believing that the success of the De
mocracy is the welfare of the people, we
cordially invite all persons, regardless of
past political affiliations, who favor sim
plicity, economy and frugality in the ad
ministration of public affairs to unite
with us.

THE SEA SERPENT.
New York, larcli 1. The Star
says: It was reported at Staten Is
land yesterday that Constahle Elbert
L. Poillon had been attacked by a sea
serpent. John Fisher, an oyster
planter, corroborates the story. His
son and Fisher were standing on the
ueach of .Lower bay on lhnrsday
afternoon -when they saw what they
took to be a large "log floating with
the tide from Quarantine island.
Fisher took a boat and started to see
what the thing was. Poillon and the
boy noticed Fisher hastily pulling
back and using quick strokes. When
he reached the shore Fisher asked
the other two to accompany him and
look at the object, which he said was
a monster fin-back shark. The sun
had gone down and it was growing
dark when the three men overtook
the creature. It was moving at a
good pace through the water. The
parties shipped their oars in a noisy
manner and were frightened to see
the object of their pursuit rise from
the -water. It had a long black and
thick neck, and a head as large as a
powaer keg. Before the fishermen
had a chance to look at the dimen
sions of its body the monster raised
one of its claws, about ten feet long,
and grasping an oar, placed it in its
massive jaws and crunched it into
pieces. Tho frightened fishermen
pulled as fast as they knew how, and,
when they reached tho shore, did not
stop running until they reached
Eltingville. Fisher and Poillon,
when chided by the neighbors with
inventing the above story, went be
fore a local justice of the peace and
made an affidavit to tho facts sub
stantially as stated above. They
think the serpent was twenty-five
feet long.
