A. V. Allen,
ASTORIA, OREGON:
THURSDAY FEBKUAKY 28. 1884
Moke tliaa 3000 children attend the
Portland public schools.
The house that Yillard built will
cost, when completed, $1,030,000.
The Columbia and Snake rivers are
free from ice and boats have resumed
their regular trips.
Ei Mahdi says he proposes to con
quer the whole earth. It is pleasant
to find one man who knows what he
wants.
The Portland News will be sold at
auction next Wednesday. Here is a
splendid chance for expectant poli
ticians. - "
The 'highest rate of postage from
.this country is to Patagonia and the
island of St. Helena twenty-seven
cents per half-ounce.
An attempt was made to burn the
state university at Eugene last Mon
day, but, fortunately, the fire was dis
covered in time to prevent any dam
age. Minnesota's assessed valuation of
taxable property amounts to $334,
459,359. That state raised last year
33,773,200 bushels of wheat from
259,794 acres.
Tt will be worth observing how the
northwest communities will treat
Yillard when he comes out next ApriL
Astoria has the only satisfactory rec-
' orcTin this respect.
0'LT four states are represented
in both houses of congress by natives,
according to the congressional direc
tory. These states are Delaware,
Maine, South Carolina and Vermont
Fob the last month the czar has
been in such a deplorable state of
"nervous depression that to all intent
and purposes he may be regarded as
insane. He is said to be thoroughly
terror-stricken, and lives in a state of
panic which would be ludicrous if it
did not produce such melancholy con
sequences. The king of Sweden has sanctioned
the revised translation of the New
- Testament in that language. It will
now be used in the churches and
schools throughout the kingdom. In
this direction Sweden has marched
more quickly than either Britain or
America. The version displaced was
one of the best of the reformation
translations.
Pkesidextiaii gossip is increasing
as the days wear by. Tilden seems
to be the old man of the sea as re
gards the Democratic part, and
there are not lacking those who say
that he would be a strong candidate.
The Sun emphatically denies that he
wants the nomination, but as he is
" 'himself reported desirous of secur
ing that honor, his own ideas upon
the subject are at least entitled to a
respectful hearing.
The year 1900 will not be a leap
' year, although it is divisible by four
without a remainder. In order to
make a calendar and solar time agree
as nearly as they can be got for many
years to come, the Gregorian calendar
drops three leap years out of every
four centuries, and these occasions
are upon such leap years as will not
.'divide by four hundred without a
remainder, although they can be di
vided evenly by four. The year 1600
was a leap year, but 1700 and 1800
were not, and 1900 will not be. The
girls should niaks a note of this.
'In that interesting British ballad
"The Ratcatcher's Daughter," it is
said that the unfortunate lover of the
young woman
"Cat his throat with a piece of glass,
.And stabbed his donkey after. '
fThis unique method of shuffling off
the mortal coil was also adopted re
cently in Philadelphia by a railroad
conductor, who, in a moment of in-
sanity, broke a window pane, and,
. with a piece of the glass thus ob
tained, inflicted wounds upon himself
1 whereof he died. The man who de
t aires to quit this life is rarely at a
loss for means, as the acts of suicides
,J5 attest .
One of the natural but unfortunate
' effects of the common doctrine of
everlasting punishment is the effect
it has had -in weakening the sense of
r, moral retribution. Mr. P. T. Barnum,
in' a recent interview with aSwi re
porter, showed this in a telling anec
dete: "Putting punishment away off
in a dim and indefinite future is not
making much of a present influence.
Ittreminds me of a chap who was
caught by a deacon in the act of
Stealing a piece of silk. 'Don't you
know you will have to pay for that
silk at the day of judgment?' said the
deacon. Fdno idea you gave such
I long credit, or I'd have taken two
pieces,' replied the thief."
