Gentlemen: Like most of my profession, I
am cautious about'pinning my faith to any
new medicine or curative agent. But your
BENSON'S CAPCINE POROUS PLASTER,
has broken through the barriers and won its
way to my good opinion. My attention was
first called to it some eight months ago by a
patient of xnino Although 1 was well ac
quainted with the superior excellence of your
other plaster and antiseptic dressing, made
especially for the profession, tho lienons
was comparatively new to me. I had heard,
however. 6f its merits as a remedy, in eases
of Lame Back, Local Rheumatism, Neural
gia. Congestion of the Bronchial Tube3 and
Lungs. Dyspepsia, Torpid Lirer and the like
affections, and havo since began to expert

CAPCINE PLASTER an exceptionally clean

Many tests of its Qualities, made in my own

Orepon Deaf Mute School.
This school -was established in
1870. It happened almost by acci
dent W. S. Smith, a mute teacher,
was traveling over the state, sketch
ing scenery, and as he passed through
Roseburg met Hon. S. 1s Chadwick,
and gave him the number of mutes he
had met in his travels. Mr. Chad
wick had been elected secretary of
State that fmriner nnrl lvmild JiKsnmfi
the duties of his office in September
ioiiowing when the legislature would
meet. Mr. P.hnrltrirlr lnvifprl Tfr.
Smith to come to Salem in September
and see if a school could not be
started. Mr. Smith came, and Mr,
L-hadwick placed the matter in a
favorable light before Governor
Grover, who recommended an appro
priation for the establishment of a
Deaf Mute school. Mr. Lockhart in
troduced the resolution asking for
means for that purpose. Through
the explanations of Messrs. Smith
and Chadwick the amount necessary
was secured, and the school opened
with Mr. Smith as superintendent and
teacher, and so continued. At this
time there was no other person in
Salem who also understood the sign
language, except Mr. Smith's wife.
Mr. Smith had no assistance for a
long time. The credit of this is due
to W. S. Smith and Hon. S. F. Chad
wick, for without their efforts no
Bchool would have been founded.
The School for the Blind, of Ore
gon, has a somewhat similar history.
Two years after the Deaf Mute sohool
was established, Mr. Chadwick, with
the aid of Miss Nellie Simpson, a
teacher of the blind, obtained an ap
propriation for a Blind school. Mis3
Simpson was appointed teacher, and
conducted the school in a very cred
itable manner. Though deprived of
her sight, she was finely educated in
the east and was competent to teach
those who were as unfortunate as
herself in not being able to see.

Good Advice.
President Porter, of Yale, recently
gave this sound and wholesome ad
vice to the students: "Young men,
you are the architects of your own
fortunes; rely on your own strength
of body and soul. Take for your star
self-reliance. Inscribe on your ban
ner, 'Luck is a fool, Pluck is a hero.'
Don't take too much advice, keep at
the helm and steer your own ship,
and remember that the art of com
manding is to take a fair share of the
work. Think well of yourself. Strike
out. Assume your own position. Put
potatoes in a cart, go over a rough
road, and the small ones go the bot
tom. Kise tibove the envious and the
jealous. Fire above the mark you
intend to hit Energy, invincible de
termination, with a rigid motive, are
the levers that move the world. Don't
deceive. Don't read novels. Don't
marry until you can support a wife.
Be civil. Bead the papers. Adver
tise your business. Make money and
do gcod with it Love your God aud
yonr fellow men. Love truth and
virtue. Love your country and obey
its laws."
