AN EXISTING IMPEDIMENT.
The frequency with -which trfe
- "best methods" of preaching are dis
cussed by ministers indicates a fact
which, the church is loath to ac ac
"Whether rightly or wrongly, it has
. -failed to keep up with the march of
the world. To a certain extent, there
tofore, the church and the world are
looking 'at different problems and
striving for different objects. It is
thejjoast of the church that it is ever
the same: it is the glory of the world
that it is never the same, but that it
is moving on to higher aspects of
duty and "hobler conceptions of truth.
Formerly, the church and the world
were almost identical; but they
are so no longer. And so the
- clergy often feel that they are
speaking to the air, and that a
chasm has opened between the pulpit
and the pews which the most facile
pulpit eloquence is powerless to
bridge over. But this state of affaire
need not exist, and in fact ought not
to exist. The church may hold firm
ly to the ideas which it believes to be
essential to salvation, and which have
been handed down from a venerable
past, and yet adapt itself, in its prac
tical work, to the changed condition
of modern life. A wise development is
just as necessary to its well being,
and even its existence, as a wise con
servatism. And if, as it claims, it
has a message for the living men and
women of to-day, it must in some way
: come to them with that message; for
jthey may never come to it Besides
the old truths which it is set
to guard, there are new and deep
problems of life demanding solu
tion, and upon the right solu
.' tion of which depends the
welfare of myriads of human beings.
Who better than the church can help
men to the right solution? It is
therefore absolutely necessary that
the clergy should be men of the
world in the best sense of that much
abused phrase. They should know a
great deal not only of the people of
the first, but of the people of the
nineteenth centurv. Thev should be
' acquainted not only with the specu-
lations of the school-men, but also
with the speculations of men and
wonYen who surround them. Thus,
the church, though in a different way,
may again become the power which
it was in the so-called ages of faith,
and represent not only the splendid
achievements of a vanished past, but
the more splendid triumphs of a liv
ing present
"Ix a year or two,' says Mr. Will
iam H. Vanderbilt, our American
czar, 'we may have no government,
but we must have railroads." His
opinion seems to be that while the
government stale and national, is a
mere l)agatelle which the people can
easily get along without, the railroads
are the great controlling power the
supremacy of which we must all ac
knowledge. It must be admitted
'that he has-always acted on this pe
culiar Yanderbilt theory. But the
czar is wrong. The government is in
,no danger whatever. He will find it
all right two years or twenty years
hence if he should live so long. It
does not, fortunately, depend upon
the railroads or upon the great mill
ionaires. -If it did it would have
been blotted out long ago. The
czar should not repeat his famous
Chicago speech on the text of the
public.
The salmon fisheries of Scotland,
hitherto very valuable, are threatened
with destruction. It has been officially
announced that 1600 diseased salmon
were taken out of the river Tay alone
"during the months of November and
December. The disease has spread
with alarming rapidity. Of the fish
taken from the river during the first
week of January 30 per cent, were
diseased, being literally covered with
a leprous substance
