m hc gmtg iotim ASTOKIA, OREGON: TUESDAY f:FrBRUAKY 19, 1B SUFFICIENT ANSWER. The publication iu Saturday's is sue of The AsTonA'of the fact that the Independent was mortgaged to ".Russian Bob," -who is its virtual owner, caused that vile and venal sheet to have a fit, and in a filthy but thoroughly characteristic manner in yesterday's issue it heaps abuse on thi3 journal for our presumption in exposing the workings of the gang who control and prostitute its col umns. Prostitution is what that band is bast acquainted with; compos ing a corporation without capital; combined with a crew whose only creed is crime; captained by curs who cringe before those whom they cannot compel to pay .tribute. Honest - opposition, this journal would welcome; manly avow al of different principles from those we hold, we would respect; but such scurrilous slanders as those in yes terday's Independent can jtot be im pute! to other motive than malice. We do not single out the unfortu nate little creature whom necessity compels to do the bidding of his masters. Our remarks are addressed to the entire gang who control that sheet; whose flag bears the one word "blackmail," and whose principles are embodied in the one word "swag.'' Abuse from such a source is the highest form of compliment that that outfit could tender. The gentlemanly manner in which the editor of ths Independent yasterday al lnded to the fact that we were once a teacher, will no doubt bs appreciated by many cultured ladies and gentlemen in this state who hv.ve occupied that honor able position. It is to n? a matter of congratulation, a subject of .proper pride that wa have baen a tsacher, and if the editor of the Ind?pendsnt continues hi3 ra5earch ha will find that we have always earned an hone3t living by honorable means. Doas that gentleman court equal scrutiny? Ciu he truthfully say as much? The people would like to have the records show how much it costs rail road and other monopolies to buy a one-horse newspaper. As the Oregon tan and Astomax may have had some experience they may be able to an swer the question. The Oregonian is perfectly able to speak for itself. As for The Astoei an, we will say this much: If the ed itor of the Independent means to al lege or imply or insinuate that the opinions of this paper are or have been an article of sale, ho deliberately lies. And a man that will lie will steal. Whek an alleged "editor" writes to the chairman of a state political com mittee, offering to sell his "influence" for coin, and some of his "bosses" are striking the leaders in the opposi tion camp for coil., it looks like pros titution, or it doesn't The whole outfit would sell their, souls to the devil for coin, and if he paid more than six bits for the whole lot he would be most shamefullv swindled. The San Franciscan is the name of" a new journal in San Francisco. The elitor is Jos. T. Goodman, and if thiffooJ wish 33 of those who knew him whoa he ran the Virginia City Snterpriss will assist him, his new venture will be a splendid success. The editor of the Independent is safe from, one charge : no one would ever suppose that he taught school. His lack of information concerning the rudiments of English are too manifest Yesterday's editorial in the Inde ' pendent had one msrit : it was orig inal" There has b3en at least one artiole in that-papar that -was not written with the scissors. -ir The Independent charges ns with "insulting" certain citizens of As toria. Pray explain! When? how? whom? and in what manner? NEW TO-DAY. - ARHDT & FLRCHEH, Agents for Oregon, Washington Territory, and Alaska for JE W. BLISS Special Cannery Machinery !
