The Financial Chronicle has an article on "Government and Land Sales," showing the -amount of public lands disposed of during the past six years in the several states and terri tories, as indicating the direction in which population is moving. The total number of acres disposed of in the year 18S3 was 16,830,455. The tableof largest sales, in the order of magnitude is as follews: Art-s. Dakota 9,CS99j Nebraka. 1,315,101 Minnesota 192,909 Kansas. SOS.Cm Washington Territor3 7G3.779 California 701.274 Mississippi 51Grll Oregon 493,770 Louisiana 4S7,59 J ArkansHS 4G0.G35 Wisconsin. 11,002 Florida 433.7-J9 Texas is not embraced in this list, as the United States has no public lands in that state. The list includes lands sold for cash, and taken under the homestead and timber culture acts. The sales for six years have been as follews: ATiS. 1878 9,av,73l 1879 8,649,2.19 183J 9.U9M95 1881 8,379,518 188i 12,525,202 188J lG,83t),453 The increase of sa cs during the past two years ha3 been very markod, being at the rate of 50 per cent in 1682, over 1SS1, and 40 per cent in 18S3, over 18S2. This extraordinary addition to the producing power of the nation, the Chionicle argues, must soon tell favorably on the exist ing business depression in the east ern states; for, although the opening of new territory cannot bo expected to show full results in the first, or even the second year after settlement, "yet when it is remembered that dur ing the two years since the depresion set in, more than twenty-nine and a quarter millions of government acres have been entered upon, it will readi ly be seen what a wonderful recuper ative power this continued opening of new territory offers." An old dial at the Temple Bar, Lon- I don, bore the curious motto, "Uegone I about your business." The maker, wishing to know what motto the judges required for the dial, sent his ! lad to ascertain it The boy applied while the judges were dining, and one of them annoyed at the unseasonable .interruption, said shortly. "Begone about your business." The lad, think ing" that this" was the desired motto, reported it to his master, and the dial ! accordingly bore this novel inscrip tion as long as the building upon , which it was placed remained. The old United States cent which is usu ally called the Franklin cent be- cause its maxim was suggested by the pilosopher, bore another legend. , "Mind your business." This has of ten been misquoted and altered to Mind your own business," which of I course, has a different sense. :f"o:r. :e-AlI3nt. 2 LI K c. 3 I Rheumatism, Neuralgia, Sciatica, j Lumbago, Backache, Headache.Toothache, I Soro Throat, Swelling.
