The Becrnah clpared for Qneenstown yesterday with 1G,"71 bbls rlour, worth 3S2,855. There will be a special meeting of the vestry of Grace church to morrow even ing at 7:30. '"The Model Young Man" is the subject of a lecture to be given at the Baptist church to-night. Several joyous parties of sleigh-riders were out last evening and enjoyed them selves exceedingly. Snowballing would bo lots of fun if it wasn't so expensive. It does seem as though glass breaks easily. The subject of the evening sermon at the Pre3bvterian church will be "Lessons from the Life of Solomon." The weather did all manner of mean things yesterday, but there is plenty of snow left for a sleigh ride to-day. Several sprains and bruises are re ported, the result of ceasting: in two in stances surgical attendance was neces sary. At a meeting of the directors of the Clatsop Road Company yesterday, L W. Case was elected president and F. J. Tay lor secretary. The card of the legal firm of Xoland & Dorris appears this morning. Those gentlemen come well recommended; their office is in Kinney's block. A Chenamus street man has u ther mometer that has run down from 85 last summer to 30 last week. Almost as bad as Transcontinental stock. The Chehalis Vidette shows still further improvement. As it now appears that paper is a long wa3s ahead and its enterprising publishers deserve the abundant reward they are receiving. Out-door traflic was almost entirely suspended yesterday, The wind and snow had everything their own way, and the only really happy portion of human ity were the boys with their sleds. The Chinamen are all praying for a thaw. The Republican State Central Commit tee meets at Portland on the 21st. F. J. Taylor is the Clatsop county member. It is the belief of a good many that should he receive in the ensuing convention the nomination for Judge of the Fifth Judi cial District he would have a handsome majority. A little daughter of Mrs. Grant's had a narrow escape from a dreadful death yesterday. She was coasting on the hill side by the hospital and Tan off the track into the water by the old mill site, the tide being at the flood. Her brother and others fortunately saw her and she was rescued with no further mishap than a thorough drenching. In the matter of Riley and Ginder'fi suits the beginning of which was recent ly reported in The Astokian, the defend ants cited in the case wherein the former is plaintiff are L Y". Case, J. H. D. Gray, C. H. Cooper, J. "V. Hume, J. W. Supre nant, M. C. Crosby, Thos. Dealy, and G. P. Wheeler. In Ginder's suit, W. G. Ross, is substituted for M. C. Crosby in the list of defendants. It is learned with regret that there were various casualities at the scene of last evening's coasting on Benton street. The bright moonlight and the superb track brought out a great crowd, and in the course of the evening there were many narrow escapes. John Irving, a waiter at the Altooua restaurant, had his left leg broken below the knoe- Jos. Langdon, a prominent member of Asto ria No. One, had his right leg broken be low the knee, and Al. Johnsonis reported to have sustained a similar injury. Gitk Htm tub Belt. The boss idiot has been discovered at last, and others who seem to be contesting for the dis tinction might as well resign. His name is Chaney and he lives in Portland. Hear ye him. "Until the last four years my life has been a sad one. Failures, sor rows and disappointment seemed ever my lot. Utterly despondent, the early aspirations of voutn grown sluggish, seeing no brightneBs in the future, more than once I have resolved to drown all in drunkenness. And I have tried tried hard to become a drunkard. Perhaps I might have succeeded but for the torture of becoming sober. The memory of an aching head and rebellious stomach, was a living horror. I gave it up in despair." t'b&dwell Chips. Chadwell, Feb., 6, 18S4. Editob Astebiak: There was a very pleasant dancing party here recently, at the residence of Mr. Andrew Anderson, on the Lewis and Clark, which was largely attended. Good music was furnished by Prof. Miller's band, and the prompting was done in fine style by Mr. C. W. Rich. Among the many fine lady dancers Jiresent may be mentioned the Swiss ady who gave pleasing exhibitions of European figures, assisted by Mr. C. F. Harder, and the lady from Canada, as sisted by the schoolmaster. The com pany departed in the early morning, voting Mr. Anderson, a very genial gen tleman and his fair wife, the queen of all good hostesses. Viator. His Pug-Xosed Rival. 'All is over, then, Henry?" There was a world of anguish in the tremulous tones of the beautiful young girl as she uttered these words. "All is over, Mehitabel," the youth re plied in determined tones, as he brushed the dust from the elbow which he had been leaning on the mantel piece. "All is over," he repeated, but as he gave utterance to this cruel decision a snasm passed across his face, and his eyelids quivered with the emotion, which, man like, he strove to conceal. She drew a deep, tremulous sigh, and the rosy lips quivered, and two pearly tears trembled on the long, silken lashes. "You will have no divided affection?" she said. "I will have no divided affection,' he replied, and there was no mistaking the firm determination expressed in his tones, and in the compressed lips and cloud ruffled brow. "I must have your whole heart or nothing." "But he is so cunning, and he gives so little trouble." "It matters not. He is a rival who dis putes with me the sovereignty of your affections. I will tolerate no rival," and he drew himself up proudly. The beautiful girl threw herself into her lover's arms. "Henry," she cried, '"he shall go. I am wholly yours. I'm not going to lose a husband for a miserable little pug dog.' Henry strained her to his heart, and calm, smiling, white-winged, sunny-eyed Peace contemplated tho scene, and dropped a tear upon the pug dog that blotted him out forever. It as from scenes like this that our country's glory springs. Till: WORLD'S D0I5GS FOR 05E DAY. Great destitution exists amon" the' sufferers bv the Ohio floods. The '"blasted Britishers' say he is the finest specimen of manhood ever seen. At a recent dinner that worthy told one gentleman to "dry up or he would make him," and continued to exhibit his ani mal proclivities until his remarks became so offensive that the chairman requested him to sit down or leave. He chose the latter alternative, and saying he would wipe out the whole crowd and other like expressions, finally left the room. While at the table he drank three bottles of champagne in quick succession out of a beer glass. On the 8th, Senator Miller presented to the senate a memorial from the Sacra mento board of trade petitioning con gress not to declare forfeited the land grant of the California and Oregon Rail road Company. The possession of the land is necessary, the memorial saj-s, for completing the road through to the Ore gon lino, thus forming through connec tion to the Columbia river, without which the road would be comparatively value less. Without this road the commercial center of trade in the northern section of California would be cut off. Congress should now be guided by the same rea sons in preventing its forfeiture that led it originally to make the grant. Cali fornia is deeply interested in its comple tion to northern water, which will bring low rates of freight. The memorial is signed by Joseph Stephens, president, and the board of directors. Friday's San Francisco Chronicle con tains a letter from Port Townsend re specting the smuggling of Chinese into Washington territory from British Co lumbia. The following is taken from it: The business of running coolies over the border is still being carried on. This is the headquarters of the trade on the American side, and Victoria and West minster are points from which little companies' of Cninamen, varying from eight to forty in number, with one or two pilots or guides, bet out. Little is heard now of the business, because it is so well organized, and the silent passing of the coolies across the line is unnoticed. In this town there is a Chinese company organized to smuggle coolies into the country. The fact is well known to cus tom house officials here, but tho limited force at the disposal of Collector Bush makes it impossible for him to break up the illicit trade in coolie smuggling. The company here employs daring and reckless white men in Victoria to bring canoe or sloop loads of Chinese across the Sound to Dungeness, Point Discovery or Point Wilson. The distance is only thirty-five miles, which can easily be covered during the night. The company has its outlooks along tho coast between these two points, and signals are given to approaching boats in case of danger. When once landed the coolies pass into logging camps, and as it is impossible for most persons to distiugnish one Chi naman from another, the presence of newcomers excites no suspicion. Willamette Farmer Somb ten thousand acres of our most valuable land has been purchased at private ontry by a combination under the leadership of James McNaught, a lawyer of Seattle. There is no disput ing the fact that when land is offered at private entry, anyone has the privilege of Surcbasing as much of such land as he as money to pay for; but then there is with each" application to purchase such laud a non-mineral affidavit to make out; and in order for one to swear with any dogreo of trutl'fulness, it is necessary to look at the land at least. But with the gentlbmau above referred to such has not been tho case; and as the land is scat tered well over the county, it is impossi ble to suppose he ever saw one acre of it. What makes the matter look more like fraud, is that during last summer several applications were sent to Olympia for Sieces that have since been purchased by IcNaught, but no satisfaction was had; nor could any information be obtained regarding the matter. Pacific Journal. With both the senators from Oregon on the senate's committee of commerce, our state ought to have a fair chance be fore that body. There is a bit of inside history in connection with the appoint ment of both our senators on this com mittee which is of some little interest. By the new rules of the senate the com mittee became entitled to two additional members. On the Republican side it was agreed "that Mr. Dolph should be the Republican member, and, as Mr. Farley of California was already a member of the committee, the Pacific states could not expect to got more than one of the new places, if any at all. The Democrats, however, hearing of the intention to pi ace Mr. Dolph on the committee, got Mr. Farley to resign, and named Mr. Slater as their selection. To all appearances this was done to prevent Mr. Dolph from going on the committee and to give Mr. Slater, whose term is about to expire, a little prestige. However, the Republi cans adhered to Mr. Dolph, and as the Democrats had a right to name a member, Mr. Slater also got a place on the com mittee, and hence it is that Oregon has two members on the senate committee of commerce. Bill Nye says that he has just returned from a visit to a place where they yank a big wet log into a mill and turn it into cash as quick as a railroad man can draw his salary out of the pay car. The log is held on a carriage by means of iron dogs while it is being worked into lumber, These iron dogs aro not like those we see on the front steps of a brown stone front occasionally. Thoy are another breed of dogs. The managing editor of the mill lays out the log in his mind and works it into dimension stuff, shingle bolts, slabs, edgings, two by fours, two by eights, two by sixes, etc., so as to use the goods to the best advantage, just as u woman takes a dress pattern and cuts it so she won't have to piece tho front breadths; and will still havo enough M t to make a polonaise for last summer's gown. ' . "I stood there for a long time witching the various saws and listening to the monotonous growl, and wishing that I had been born a successful timber thief instead of a poor hoy without a rag to my back. At one of these mills not long ago a man backed up to get away from the car riage, mid thoughtlessly backed against a large saw that was revolving at the rate of about 200 times a minute. The saw took a large chew of tobacco from the plug he had in his pistol pocket and then began on him. But there's no use in going into details. Such things are not cheerful. They gathered him out of the saw-dust and put him in a nail keg and carried him away, but he did not spsak again. Life was quite extinct. Whether it was the nervous shock that killed him, or the con cussion of tho cold saw against his liver that killed him, no one ever knew. The mill shut down a couple of hours so that the head sawyer could file his saw, and then work was resumed once more. We should leani from this never to lean on ihe buzz saw when it moveth it self aright. Notice.
