"In matters of administration the people aro not to be trifled -with as they jrere a generation ago." Ibis expression is attributed to Senator Edmunds in a recently pub lished interview, and 'is at least one he might Lave used, for it is full of truth and suggestion. There is no question but the people of this coun try are much better informed politi cally than they were a generation ago and more critical of the conduct of public men. Furthermore, reason has very largely driven clap-trap and mummer- out of political methods; many instances of this will occur to any one making comparisons, and a notable instance is called to mind by the glaring headline "Old Saddle bags," in the Louisville Courier-Jour ttal, over a horrible wood-cut portrait of ex-Senator McDonald. Apparently the esteemed editor remembered cer tain facts in American history and hoped to help its candidate toward the presidency by urging a taking sort of nickname for him. Other ed itors have similar memories, and the same thing is tried with almost every candidata The most exciting campaign this country ever saw was in 1840, and one can nonr hardly see any reason for the unusual feeling except the pres ence of "war-cries." -Harrison was a successful military man, and hence came the yell of tlTippecanoe and Ty ler too." Democrats were unfortuate enough to slur him by saying he had lived in a log cabin, with only hard cider to drink, and the Whigs made the most of the blunder. The air re sounded with "Log cabin and hard cider!" all over the country. Log cabins were made and hauled on wheels to mass meetings, pictures of the log cabins appeared everywhere. Greely began his famous work as ed itor of a paper called the Log Cabin. and the election was carried in a kind of log cabin drunk. The foolishness did not reappear in the same degree, but we can all remember some of it. "When Kepublicans conducted the first campaign against slavery their candidate was held up and shouted for as a 'Pathfinder." and great Abra ham Lincoln was belittled with the appellation of "Kailsplitter." Cer tainly the use of these names drjw votes, but the whole thing was ab surd and ridiculous, and would now be fruitless. Garfield publicly ex pressed his contempt for the "Canal Boy" talk about himself, and in fact the thing fell flat The average citi zen had come to fully realize that a man might reach the "White House from a humble beginning, and Gar field's course in public life had a good deal more to do with determining votes than his exploits on the tow- pate. And the Harrison era will hardly return to give the "Old Sad dlebags" business any potency; the time for shouting men into the Presi dency is past Springfield, Mass., Republican. An Optical Illusion. Here is a very singular illustration of the optical delusion which a change of position will sometimes effect Take a row of ordinary capi tal letters and figures: SSSSSXXXX3333338888S8 They are such as are made up of two parts of equal shapes. .Look care fully at these, and you will perceive that the upper halves of tho charac ters are a very little smaller than the lower halves so little that an ordi nary eye declares them to be of equal size. Now turn the paper upside down, and, without any careful look ing, you will see that this difference in size is very much exaggerated; that the real top half of the letter is very much smaller than the bottom half. It will be seen from this that there is a tendency in the eye to enlarge the upper part of any object upon which it looks. FRANK AND CLEAR. Having; Admitted the Strength of thr Evidence a Prominent Phy sician takes Logical Artion. Tho following letter tells its own rtory. The Ftjmature will bo recognized as that of the Phyjlcian-In-Chlofof tho Do Quincy Home, and author of " Drugs That Enslavo," "The Hypodermic Injection of Morphine," A Man ual of Nursing." and many other popular and valuablo special medical werks: 191 We3t Truth Strict, Nw Yokk, August II. 1SS0.
