Governor Irwin, of Idaho, has

and Uncle Sam would be able, to buy

Now and then oomes an eastern ex
change with a letter from this part of
the Union saying in substance, "If
you're doing well stay where you
are." The advice is most excellent
A man that is doing well should
always stay where he is. If he goes
west or east he expects to do better,
and if disappointed is unhappy and of
little good to the community where
he steps. Any man that comes here
that has ability and inclination will
succeed; and one that shirks respon
sibility will be just as unsuccessful
here as he was where he came from.
There is more in the man than there
ia in the region in which he dwells.
While ono Sherman is training for
the Kopublican nomination on the
strength of being an Ohio man, and
another Sherman is being groomed
against his will for the Democratic
candidacy on his war record and his
kisaing proclivities, Mr. Arthur is
quietly enlisting a powerful army
who will be anxious to see him suc
ceed himself. No such courtly figure
has filled the presidential chair in
half a century. Urbanity and seri
ousness, jollity and dignity, are
united in his bearing. Leaving such
pictorial terrors as Holman aside, it
looks as though he will walk away
from all competitors, including the
venerable osculating warrior of the
West.
The Oregonian talks in a sensible
way about common school education
and points out some of the defects of
the system. It omits one to our
thoughts the most prominent the
plan of cramming. Thousands go
out of our public schools every year
with empty hands and stuffed heads,
when a few clear ideas, a few practi
cal bits of knowledge are what is
needed for daily use. That is the
reason why in the tussle for existence
the boys that had to pick up the lit
tle they know the same way that a
chioken picks up his breakfast a
grain at a time are often the most
successful, and ahead of the others
who can't assimilate what they have
swallowed and are suffering from
mental dyspepsia.
The senate has at last agreed upon
a bill regulating the presidential suc
cession, so that the republic is in no
immediate danger. In the event of
the inability of the president and vice
president, the secretary of state shall
take their place at the helm. After
him come, in the order named, the
secretary of the treasury, the secre
tary of war, the attorney general, the
postmaster general, the secretary of
the navy, and the secretary of the
interior. No further ' provision is
made in the bill. This is a mistake.
When it goes to the house of repre
sentatives we trust it will be amended
so as to give the speaker and every
one of its three hundred and twenty
five members a chance for the office
in the alphabetical order of their
names. It is the only chance the
great majority of them will have.
At the recent International Fish
Exhibition in London twenty-six gov
ernments were represented, of which
the United States -was one. In the
awards which have just been made
we lead the list of nations with forty
nine gold medals, forty-seven silver
and twenty-nine bronze ones and, in
addition, twenty-four diplomas. This
is equal to about one-fourth of the
whole number of prizes distributed.
The waters that wash our shores from
Maine to Florida; the lakes that in
part bound our northern frontier; the
rivers that course through the conti
nent; the streams that fret their way
down the mountain sides, are as rich
in their finny wealth as are in their
own peculiar products the wheat
lands of the west, the gold mines of
California, the cotton fields of the
south, the orange groves of Florida,
ittt ooal and iron lands of Pennsyl-
vania, the tobacco plantations of
Connecticut, Virginia and the Caro
linas. We are blessed in everything
except our politicians.
It is related as a bit of news about'
Mr. Becher that he delights in dia
monds, opals, amethysts and all sorts
of gem?. He can, he says, pass hours
gazing into the flashing depths of a
brilliant or watching the play of love
ly color in an opal. Now, let not the
captious and irreverent be too hasty
in calling the great preacher a world
ling. What of inanimate nature has
more beauty in smaller compass than
a diamond? Its high price alone
points to the elevation of sentiment
it inspires. That it is only the more
beautiful on a taper finger, in a deli
cate pinkish ear or strung in a river
of light about a soft white throat is
surely not to be spoken to its disad
vantage. One thing is certain, if
Mr. Beecher, like Shake3pere, finds
his ''sermons in stones, and good in
everything," dozens of congrega
tions will immediately supply their
preachers with a set of the finest
jewels that money can buy. May
Mr. Beecher never want a diamond!
